Italian sport climbing maestro Stefano Ghisolfi has arrived in Red River Gorge with one goal in mind, to climb as many of the Red's hardest routes as possible. Sefano will only achieve his goal if he brings his A-game to one of America’s most vaunted climbing areas. Its steep sandstone walls and bullet-hard crimp lines have made it a go-to destination for climbers from around the world.
We've come to Red River Gorge to visit a new place,
famous for its sandstone walls and a certain number of artworks.
We maybe came a bit out of the best period.
The weather was cold, the few shops available were closed
and the cracks were lonely as a desert island.
But basically, our main goal was not to bring back home a nice tent.
We came to smash the place and send the highest number of artworks possible
and with 5.8z plus and 1.9a in just a few days, Stefano Ghisolfi certainly did it.
Those days were, well, great.
It was pretty sunny and warm for the period
and after just a few tries Stefano managed to climb Santer Smog Direct,
5.14d or 9a at the Bob Marley sector,
the most difficult route of the entire gorge.
Oh yes, pretty impressive.
Also because we were just arrived so,
despite the weather forecast was announcing a lot of rain coming for the next days,
we were actually more than positive about this journey
and Stefano wanted to give an on-site attempt to maybe the most famous food here at the Red,
pure imagination.
She's mean.
Ale!
Today we came here to the Chocolate Factory
where I tried pure imagination but it went pretty badly because
after the attempt I realized that I had a hole in the middle finger of my right hand
and I lost a lot of blood, I dirtied all the sockets
and I couldn't even clean them unfortunately
and I think I'll have to rest for at least two days before I get my fingers back.
The hole in the finger wasn't actually the only problem.
The weather switched to very cold and rainy.
So we had to look for the cracks with super overhanging routes,
pushing ourselves to the most remote areas of the Red,
using tracks many times and climbing in very very dark places.
After something like one week of non-stop rain really everything becomes well,
even the rock not directly hit by the water.
So we were forced to stay in our cabin in the deep woods
or to travel to the nearest town Lexington one hour and a half away
let the time pass and just hope for the best.
But this is a story with a happy ending.
In fact during the remaining days of the trip the rain stops
just to let our hero try and send all the remaining hard climbs of the Red,
making this a very successful mission
and us want to leave for the next trip as soon as possible.
you
