They couldn't have more different climbing styles ft

Extreme Slab Climbing

Hello YouTube! Welcome to another episode! I'm Louis, I'm at Yonder, and I'm joined by
Anna Hazelnut! Hi! So, yeah, I'm really excited. We hadn't met before, but it feels like we
have because we've been following each other on Instagram for ages. I watch all your videos.
Yeah, I've been following everything. There we go, yeah. We climb really, really differently.
Like, actually opposite. Like, if you were to plot the most, like,
further straight points on the climbing chart, that's where we are. We just warmed up doing,
like, some easy boulders, and every single one of them could not be more different how we did them.
So, we're going to film two episodes today. First one, we're going to do a load of climbs that I
think I'm going to learn from Anna from. We're going to do, like, a whole load of slab climbs.
Should be really, really fun. I've got some easy ones, some hard ones picked out.
We'll flop around. I'll fall off stuff. I'll probably learn some really cool stuff.
And then, after you watch this video, head over to Anna's channel,
and it'll be Anna out of her comfort zone doing a load of burly overhangs, some dynos,
things like that. The stuff I like. I think it's going to be good.
Oh yeah, we're going to learn a lot from each other.
Let's get to it. Okay.
Goddammit, can I ever not end an intro like that?
I've not yet managed that black V5. Tried it, couldn't work out what I was supposed to do,
and now Anna's here to save the day. So, I think we should try this one first.
You happy with that?
Which one? Pink?
This black one.
Black.
We can do pink first.
No, let's do black.
Let's do black.
Yeah, let's try that.
All right, cool. You go first, because I've got...
Oh no, you know what? I'll go first to show what it looks like when a non-slab connoisseur tries it.
No, I don't...
Imagine if I do it this time, though. How nice would that be?
See, about here...
So, that looks great right now.
Yeah, but...
So, I would try to get my left foot up. Get it up there.
You told me to pick up my foot. I picked up my foot and it fell over.
God, I feel so nervous, because I'm like...
You must flash. This is your special...
This is how I feel getting on any dino at a con. Like, I... Literally, this is my only gimmick.
What am I going to do with my life if I don't do this?
Yeah, go on.
Oh, are you grabbing the inside of the...
Okay, but you don't like it.
I don't want to tell if we're supposed to press up.
Oh, oh, go on.
Doesn't even need to grab her own foot. Look at that.
Oh, go on, Anna. Go on, Anna.
Yes, wow.
Crazy conflict.
So good, come on.
In the bedroom, pink makeup.
You made it all dramatic as well.
Lower right foot. Oh, I'm so nervous.
I hope I'm still an amazing slab climber.
Wow, okay.
Okay, so takeaways from this.
Well, I don't know if I can put my foot up by my ear like you did.
So, what am I going to do?
So, takeaways are slab is arguably one of those nastiest ways of climbing.
So, you'll see me like thumbing the bolt holes,
which are just for like crimping on the side or just like trying to pay and try.
I thought I saw you grab the edge of this one. Is that?
Yeah, yeah. So, it's not like really that bad.
I hate this.
Yeah, yeah, it's awful.
So, and then another step, which is also something that I like notice when you're warming up.
If you don't have the flexibility, just baby steps.
Okay, okay.
Like with slab, a lot of the time when you step up really high,
and I told you this in the warm-ups,
but like it's really hard once you get your foot up to step all the way up
sometimes it's necessary like for that first move.
But for instance, on this volume, I don't know if you saw,
but I was just like so much patience.
And like, have you done any crack climbing?
Let's just say no.
Okay, okay.
So, it's kind of like crack climbing in the way,
but like with your feet in the way where you don't want to move to the next hold
until you're super solid on that foot.
And then you want to get really solid and balanced on that foot.
So, you're saying don't dino for the top.
Yeah.
Okay.
I mean, if you want, that would be entertaining.
Okay.
I'm still not sure about this first section,
but it really doesn't look like you can just press up.
I think I really like...
Yeah.
Amazing.
Well, it's not really got me anywhere though.
So, the left foot on is going to be your best bet because...
Yeah, I think.
Yeah.
Yes.
Come on.
Okay, okay.
Hang on.
That looks good actually.
That was kind of getting there.
And this...
Yeah.
Yes, yes.
Come on.
Come on, press it out.
You got it.
Yes.
Ah, my glasses.
So good.
Oh my God.
Yeah, yeah.
Just use that.
Oh, now I have to stand in this sweaty patch where I put my hand.
Oh, you're making quick work of that volume.
Come on.
Easy.
Yay.
Okay.
Well, that's one done.
Oh, thank you, Anna.
I feel like you figured that all out yourself.
Yeah.
Thank you for all that advice that I didn't listen to at all.
No, the going slow on the volume at the end, like...
You want to go fast because you're scared.
Yeah.
If you go fast, it's not going to work.
Yeah, I actually didn't know what that top hold was.
I thought it was like just a touch.
So, that's why I'm going like extra slow.
Oh, stuff to hold.
That's quite nice though.
Well, okay.
That kind of worked.
What now?
Should we try, I suppose, the six and then the seven?
Yeah.
Okay.
We're going to try this one next.
You go first again.
It went so well before.
It does look quite difficult, especially the first move.
Is that kind of like...
That's where I was falling off.
First move and then at the end as well.
I think I just have to hop on and try.
It's hard to know until you're on.
Yeah, sometimes you just get on and work it out.
Yeah, exactly.
Go on.
Oh.
Go on.
Yeah.
Immediately better than my first go.
You went straight up.
So, I think right foot onto here.
Okay, because I've been going left on this little one
and then trying to get my right foot there.
That looked loads better.
You just went straight into the cone.
Gaston and then match was my idea.
Yeah.
Yes, yes, yes.
Come on.
Come on, into the undercling.
You got this.
Yes.
So good.
Oh my god.
Yes, yes, yes.
Come on.
Yes.
Am I missing some holds?
You got it.
Come on, trust it.
Easy.
Come on.
Keep breathing.
You got this.
Yes.
That's right there.
I don't know if I can do any moves off this foot hold.
Oh, yay.
Yes.
You just swam up that.
That was incredible.
You didn't see my face all the way through just going.
Oh, so good though.
It felt desperate.
I was like barely on this one.
It also, I don't know if you have this.
When you're climbing a style with someone who's
kind of a lot more advanced than you are
and it just changes like your perspective.
Maybe I just thought that move was loads harder than it was.
And it's actually fine.
If I just relax into it
and just trust the feet like Anna's doing,
maybe it'll be all right.
Yeah, go on.
So good.
Yeah.
And that was exciting.
I really am so bad at slopers.
That's like definitely highlighting it.
You're good enough to get through that.
So good.
So, so good.
Are we on to green?
I think we're on the green,
but I have no idea how to climb this.
I'll try this one first this time.
Yeah, just give it a go.
Let's just get on and find out what happens.
Yeah.
Well, it doesn't feel like it wants me to go down again.
Okay.
So maybe from there you're pressing.
Come on.
Oh, beautiful.
Really?
Oh, so that's a dead end.
Oh, that was really good.
Oh, thank you.
Go on.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Go on.
Yeah, go on, Anna.
This is so strange.
Go.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
That's it, that's it, that's it.
Yeah, yeah.
Come on, Anna.
Oh, wow.
You can press it now.
Go on, go on, go on.
Yes, yes.
Oh, that was it.
Maybe like it sits there.
Oh, wow.
Nice.
What a move, this one.
Come on.
Yes.
I got it, I got it.
Okay, the foot switch goes, though.
The foot switch goes.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
How great is slab climbing?
You know, if you'd said that to me like 10 years ago, I would have gone, you're wrong.
No, it's not great at all, but I've got really into it.
Yeah, go on, go on, go on, go on.
Yeah, get it.
I wanted to get like my foot off there.
I know, I know.
I thought you were going to.
I'm not going to try that.
Come on.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Switch it up.
So good.
Come on.
Yes.
Get there.
No.
That can't be it.
I feel like we're missing something.
I hope we are, because that feels like the hardest slab I'll ever have climbed.
All right, left hand.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Static.
Ah, come on.
Yes, Anna.
Yes, come on.
Slope, oh, my God.
Oh, you got that, OK.
You don't want it.
Go on.
Go, go, go, go.
A bit more.
Is that a slope?
No, it's good.
It's good.
Exactly where you were aiming.
Just left of the ball.
I thought you were going to just blow it out with the feet.
I didn't know what the hold was, I thought it was a sloper.
I know, I know!
Oh!
Fist bumps!
He got it all on camera as well, isn't it?
Ah, so good.
Yeah, come on.
Alright, time is now, you've got this.
Yeah.
Ah!
That was so smooth!
Oh my gosh.
It's actually not that bad if you have the foot there, and you just go for it.
It means you get the good bit, like you did, but you don't bondo afterwards.
Got it, okay.
Whoa!
Did you get your shin?
Yeah.
Ah!
How badly?
This is exactly when you have to get back on the horse, isn't it?
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Yes, yes, yes.
Yeah, come on, Anna.
Be brave.
Oh, that was so good.
Okay, what have we got left?
We've done all the hard slabs.
The blue one, yeah?
The queen line, yes, let's go.
Ah, so many volumes.
Very sticky feet needed.
When they had it tagged in the comp, they just had one, two, three, four,
so I think they want four on this volume.
That's what it looked like.
Go on.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Whoa!
It's not just mad jumpy dinos.
But it's going to have a toe hook, I swear.
Ah, if you're counting toe hooks as compy.
Oh, then yes, it's extremely compy.
Do as many toe hooks as you possibly can.
Ah, yeah.
Go on, keep working it out.
Someone told me you were going to do loads of toe hooks.
Yes, yes, yes, yes.
No, yes, you're in.
Come on, I'm wet.
Yes, yes, yes, yes.
It's the fun way.
Yes, come on.
Yeah, and then it's just the least graceful move.
Just dangle like a cat, yeah.
Go on, go on.
Ah, yeah, it's so annoying.
The logo's exactly where you don't want it to be.
It's like slippery under your foot.
So they put the logo of this hold,
which is like no text,
right where you want to hold it.
Close, though.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
I unclipped my thing.
There's a crimp somewhere.
Where can you find it?
Oh, oh.
I think she's found the crimp.
Go on.
Yeah, Anna, come on.
Yeah.
That's every move done.
Yeah.
So now I just have to link that.
Yeah, if you want to.
I think we can cut it together, though.
It's done.
I'll say you did it.
No, I'm a purist.
That was so good.
What changed, like,
from this time to that time?
I found this finger lock
on the underside,
where these volumes come together.
And I just, like, jammed my middle finger in there.
I was like, I'm not going anywhere.
Stick the jump this time.
That's really exciting.
I've done that move before,
but on its own.
And then when you know you're going to do that,
all the way through these other moves,
you're, like, thinking about it all the way through,
getting more and more anxious about it.
You floated up the first section, too.
I felt like I just did fast wrestling.
I've done the start section enough times now,
because I've been trying to do that stupid method
for ages.
That's incredible.
Oh, my God, I'm blown away.
Oh, yay.
There's that stupid sloper.
I think we should eat a brownie,
and then you'll find that sloper
better than it feels now.
Okay.
I think.
Yeah.
Oh.
That kind of.
Yeah, go on.
And just slap it.
Yeah.
Gave it a good high five, though.
Okay, I think I'm good.
This is a stupid climb for stupid people, anyway.
Let's do more slopers
and not the slap.
That's what I think of this one.
Whee.
Ow.
Whee.
Yay, well done.
We did all the slabs.
That was loads of fun.
Yeah, that was so fun.
Lots of learning.
Thank you, Anna.
Yeah, well, thank you.
I feel like I learned a lot about slabs
and the more dynamic,
indoor-y slabs.
For me, it's also just nice
having someone who's psyched on that style
to try stuff with,
because like I was saying,
I'd actually tried all three of those
first ones, got shut down quickly,
wasn't enjoying it at all,
then moved on.
Then you have someone psyched to climb with.
So much more fun.
You floated up those.
I've been practicing a lot.
Remember, folks, click that join button
if you haven't already,
and then head over to Anna's channel
and then you can watch us doing a whole load of dynos
and more powerful climbing.
It's going to be loads of fun.
Should we go do that now?
Yeah!
Bye!
