Photographing Wild Kingfishers in Wicklow! From My Own Pop-Up Hide

I spent the day in Wicklow trying to photograph one of Ireland’s most stunning river birds! the kingfisher. I set up my own pop-up hide, and while the day started out bright and windy, it soon turned very wet! That’s all part of the adventure though, and the reward of seeing these beautiful flashes of blue darting along our rivers makes every soggy hour worth it.

I don’t use commercial hides in Ireland as I like to spend my time scouting locations, for me, the satisfaction comes from putting in the hard work, spending time in nature, and earning those moments with the birds on their own terms. It makes every photo feel that bit more special.

The kingfisher is such a jewel of our waterways here in Ireland, and I’m always grateful for any chance to spend time with them.
