Ladies and gents, welcome back to another KevG video. If you're new to the channel,
my name is Kevin. I do stuff on my Audi S5, videos, rallies, modifications, whatnot. Due to
unfortunate recent events, I will have to repaint my entire wheel setup. So this video is going to
showcase this wheel going from gunmetal gray to gloss black. This is the final product. I'm looking
at it right now. It's magnificent, pristine. I'm just really proud of what we were able to
accomplish for $25. So I can already tell you guys, pay attention to this video. It's going
to be important. If you're new to the channel, consider subscribing, please. Next goal is 2,000
subscribers. So I appreciate everybody's support as of late, but that is the next goal. So keep
hitting that button, whether it's down there or down there, somewhere on the screen. In the video
today, I'm taking you guys through the entire process of paint selection, preparation, materials
needed, time, coating. We're doing the whole nine yards. So I hope you guys take something away from
this video, whether you're doing a DIY project, watching this video for fun, entertainment.
I hope it's helpful in some way. So I'm going to stop talking. We're going to go to Lowe's to get
a proper paint selection because that is one of the most important steps in the entire process. So
follow along, watch the video. Hopefully you guys learned something. This is how to paint your rims
any color. I apologize for the muffled sound of my voice, but we're wearing masks because we're
in Lowe's right now. Choosing the right paint. We have this high performance enamel. Enamel is
oil-based. So we need an oil-based clear coat. I think we should get two. And if I don't use it,
we can just return it, right? So for gloss black, we're doing this professional 15 minute fast dry.
I'm going to get two of each. I should be good for like three coats. Sorry for the road noise
and any wind noise that might be out here. I'm recording outside, but let's hit some of the final
important stuff before we start actually painting this. This I did not record, but it's like this
3M final stripping, um, whatever this is, it's like the scrubby material. So this is going to
be like equivalent to a light sand, like a 600 grit or something like that. So it's important
that we get all the preparation done. We want to not skip the preparation and don't cheap out on
products. So I recommend these, obviously I have not put them on yet, but we're going to do kind
of a review and see the gloss, see everything that comes from these right here. So I got two
of each, two clear coat, and then two of the high performance enamel. Like I said, the enamel is
going to be oil-based. So it is going to be better for metal like this. Speaking of the metal. So,
so this is painted on from the wheel company. Uh, so I'm not priming it. It's not bare metal.
So what I'm going to do is just scuff this up with this. That'll make sure it's plenty ready
for the paint directly. But before we even do that, I know this wheel is brand new,
but I still want to get it completely washed down. There's some dust that has gotten there
over the last couple of days. So we're going to hit this with some soap and water. I might use
dish soap just because that's more of a degreaser. Normally you don't want to use dish soap on
anything car related, but this could be an exception just because we're prepping for paint.
So we want to get everything off. So the wash doesn't need to be too crazy. Like I said,
this is a brand new wheel. So this is like an older microfiber towel and then dish soap, water.
All right. Now that we're clean, we're just going to fully dry the inside
because that's where I'm going to start. I want to eventually fully dry the entire thing, but
go one place at a time for now. Right now I can feel it has like a really glossy kind of finish
and we want that to be scratched up so we can adhere the paint eventually when we spray it.
So like I said, don't cut out your prep work. This is going to be the most important part. This
is really what determines how well your paint is going to stick and how long it's going to stay. So
invest your time now in doing it and you won't regret it in the future.
That actually took so long for the entire wheel, but it's all scuffed up now.
It just has this like powdery stuff that came off of the Brillo pad.
So what I'm going to do is just wet it down and dry it off with a microfiber towel and make sure
the paint is ready to go for painting. We're going to get some coats on. Make sure to mask off
your valve stems because you don't want paint on them. That's pretty much self-explanatory. You
absolutely do not want to get paint on your wheels. So that's where these come in handy.
If you don't recognize what these are, these are like the paint color sample cards. You can get
them for free at Home Depot, Lowe's, etc. Technically not stealing, technically not using
them for their intended purpose, but nonetheless, this is what we're going to use them for and this
is how they go on. Well, isn't that a beautiful sight? So like I said, these are technically free,
so use them if you want to. All right, like I said, these need to be shaken for a full minute
and then it's 15 minute fast drive. Let's open this up. First layer is going to be very light.
All right, we'll call that good for coat number one because we want to let this sit. Like I said,
the heavier coats are coming later. That's when you want to really put it on. This is just so we
get a nice light coat around the entire side. Do not rush this. You're going to want to. Trust me,
the result will prove itself when we get even layers and have it looking good.
All right, two coats down and it's looking good. Still really even. As you guys saw by
my spray pattern, it was a bit heavier, so things are still good.
Clear coat's going to be the same deal. A minute of shaking and then
one light layer, a couple deep layers. This is looking good and I'm really excited to
see what it looks like after this gloss is on it. This is after three coats of the clear coat.
I think this is going to end up being our final product. I'm going to let it sit in the garage
and let it dry for about an hour. Pull it back out while it's a little less windy and then
see where we're at in terms of this drying, the clear coat drying and look at the shine then
because it is wet. It's going to appear a little more shiny than it actually is,
but this looks super good. Really gloss black, like crazy good. I'm happy with where we're at,
but like I said, I'm going to let it dry inside and I'll get back to you guys in a minute.
Finally inside with everything coated, this is the final product. Again, it's not fully dry.
I'm going to let the cap dry and the wheel dry for an hour total. I'm going to take these cards
out right now and like masking off and everything so we can see the final product. All right,
I hope this isn't windy because I have the garage door open, but guys, this is the final product.
It's dried for a day overnight in the garage and I must say I am very happy. This was three
coats of the black high-performance enamel from Rust-Oleum Professional Series and three coats
of the crystal clear enamel, same line. This is what we're looking at in terms of gloss.
It's got a little dust on it from overnight, but nothing too crazy. I'll get up closer here so you
guys can see. As you can see, the clear coat really makes the biggest difference on the glossiness.
There's not really any orange peel from the paint. Everything is good. This is a good,
solid job. For $25 for enough paint for all four wheels, I'm going to be tackling this project
for the other wheels in my car tomorrow. Be sure to watch out for that video because it's
going to come hopefully sometime in the next week where I actually paint all four wheels
black and then put them on the car. I'm getting excited. We have a rally coming up
and I want everything to be perfect gloss black. If you're new to the channel, subscribe.
