Welcome to the Korean Whiteboard Lesson.
My name is Kaejin.
Hello.
Kaejin here.
In this lesson, you will learn how to give simple directions in Korean.
Let's get started.
First, let's look at the dialogue.
A student is looking for the library.
She is asking how to get there.
So I read out the dialogue, so see how much you can understand.
So, where is the library?
Go straight ahead.
Then turn right at the next intersection.
The library is on the left.
Yes.
Where is the library?
Where is the library?
Library
It means library.
"i" is a subject marking particle.
And we used "i" here because "doseon-gwan."
Library
It ended with a consonant, didn't it?
Library
So we used I.
If this word ends with a vowel sound, then you will use 가 here.
a.
For example, "cafe" in Korean is 카페.
Café Pé
In this case, you will use "가" here.
Café.
So, where is it?
Where means where.
"e" is a locative case particle.
is located.
So, it literally means, where is the library located?
Where is the library?
Let's look at the answer.
Go straight ahead.
"Straight" means straight.
But Korean people often extend this sound as "jjuk."
Straight.
Because we want to emphasize that it's quite a distance.
So when it's far away, they'll make this sound even longer.
Go straight ahead.
"Go" means "go."
But it's a polite way of saying "go," so it would be like "please go" in English.
So, it literally means please go straight.
Go straight ahead.
Or Korean people might say "Keep going."
Go straight ahead.
Go straight.
Turn right at the intersection.
Then it means and then.
and then.
Then, the intersection.
Intersection
Intersection
And there is another way to say intersection in Korean, which is 교차로.
So some people might say intersection.
Intersection
And some people will say intersection.
At the intersection
It means at the intersection.
So "에서" is another location marking particle.
It's like at or in English.
Turn right at the intersection.
Right.
Right
To the right.
Another particle here is the particle indicating direction.
So it is similar to "towards" in English.
To the right.
To the right.
Turn right.
"Doseyo" is another polite way to say "please turn."
Please turn.
Do it.
Then turn right at the intersection.
Then please turn right at the intersection.
Next sentence here.
The library is on the left.
Now you have found the familiar word 도서관, which means library.
Library
"은" is a topic-marking particle.
And we use "은" here because it's 도서관.
Library
This word ends with a consonant.
Library
So we use "eun."
What if the word ends with a vowel sound?
For example, like café.
Café
P.
In this case, you will use "는" here.
But again, "library" ended with a consonant.
So we will use "은" here.
The library is on the left.
Left.
Another key word for today.
Left means left.
Left side.
On the left, "e" is the particle we learned here.
There is.
"있어요" means "is located."
So it means the library is on the left.
The library is on the left side.
The library is on the left.
So let's look at this map.
So this is, this one person, person one, is looking for the library.
Where is the library?
And this answer is saying "Keep going."
So this one is going straight ahead.
Go straight ahead.
Then turn right at the crossroads.
Okay, so at the intersection.
Oh, there's an intersection.
And this person is saying turn right.
Okay.
I turn right.
The library is on the left.
The library is on the left.
Oh, here.
So this is the library.
I am right.
So today we learned this important directional word.
Straight.
Right.
Right means right.
And left.
Left.
Left is used here as well.
Left means left.
Right.
Straight.
Right.
Left.
And also for place, we just learned "library."
Library means 도서관.
Library
We also learned jachageori.
Crossroads
Right.
So it means intersection.
There are other words that you will find in the next dialogue, which is "Super."
Super.
It is from the English word.
It's the English loanword, which is "supermarket."
Super.
How about this?
Bank
Bank in Korean is 은행.
Bank
Library Super Bank, one block away.
You will find these place words and direction words in the next dialogue.
Okay.
So let's look at more examples.
How about this?
Go to the right.
Okay.
So number 2.
So this number 2 is saying "Go to the right."
Right means right.
Okay.
So I'll go right.
"Go" means go right.
Do you remember?
"Go" means please go.
Then I'll go straight.
Okay.
I'll go to the right side.
Then turn right at the crossroads.
Do it.
And then at the intersection.
Yes, I found the intersection.
Turn right.
Right means right again.
Okay.
I turned right here.
How about this?
The supermarket is on the left.
We just learned this word, didn't we?
Supermarket
Where is the supermarket?
Left.
Left means left.
Oh, okay.
So it's left.
Left.
So number 2.
Okay.
This person found the supermarket.
How about this?
Go to the left.
Now you're familiar with this sentence pattern, right?
Go to the left.
Left means left, right?
Left, left.
Okay.
So number 3.
Person number 3 is here.
Okay.
Then I'll go left.
Go to the left.
Please go to the right side.
Please go right.
Then turn right from the intersection.
And then at the intersection.
Turn right.
Okay.
This person turns right.
So this person turns right at the intersection.
Turn right.
And the bank, the bank is on the left.
The bank is on the left.
So this number 3 is on the left side.
It's on the left.
So I found it.
The bank is on the left.
So this person found the bank here.
So do you see the sentence pattern here?
So we write it down here.
Go straight ahead.
Go straight.
Please go straight.
Go straight ahead.
And you put the directional word here.
It can be right, right.
It can be left, left.
And just say "toward" to go.
Please go.
Please go to the right, left.
Go to the right.
Go to the left.
How about this?
Turn right or left.
Please turn right or left.
If it's the right, you will say "Turn right."
If it's the left, then you will say "Turn left."
How about this?
You put the name of the place.
For example, it can be a library, supermarket, bank, or the café that we learned.
The café, where is the café, on the right or left?
Café, café.
It ended with a vowel sound.
So I use "neun," "neun" here.
Supermarket too.
Super, super.
It ended with a vowel sound.
So I'm using "neun" here, "neun" here.
Super, Super.
How about this?
Bank
If it's 은행, bank, then I will use 은 here because 은행, 은행.
It ended with a consonant sound.
So I will use "eun" here.
So you have to check what sound it ends with.
, .
So you will use a different particle here.
And if it's correct, then you will say "right."
If it's left, then you will say "left."
And just say it's there.
It's located.
In Korea, more people use Naver Map and Kakao Map instead of Google Maps.
So if you visit Korea, download these two apps.
That will be really helpful when you travel in Korea.

On the left, on the left.
And do you remember how to say "library"?
Library, library.

The library is on the left.
