The wandering doctor Shanhaizi treated no humans, only mythical creatures. Carrying an old book bound with bronze plates carved with strange beasts, he believed that the illnesses of creatures from the mountains and seas lay not in their bodies, but in their nature.
Ajiu, an ancient nine-tailed fox, was tormented by recurring nightmares and an unbearable burning itch in her tails. She sought help from Shanhaizi, who told her she was troubled by the Four Fiends.
Together they visited Bifang, Qiongqi, Taotie and the rest of the Four Fiends. Shanhaizi diagnosed their ailments one by one: Bifang’s rootless fire, Qiongqi’s twisted sense of good and evil, and Taotie’s bottomless greed, then prescribed cures for each.
As the Four Fiends freed themselves from confusion and emptiness, Ajiu gradually recovered. In the end, Shanhaizi revealed the truth: monsters were never monsters — they were reflections of the human heart.
Healing these creatures was, in essence, healing humanity.
