When it comes to India, the northeastern part of the country is like another world when compared to the rest of the country. Here, the food is quite different, the way of life is a little slower-paced, and the land is lush, green, and inviting. The people in the northeastern states of Assam and Meghalaya are warm and welcoming, and that has been a constant no matter where I go in this amazing country. Come along with me as I take you on a trip through northeast India!
After an eventful first day in the city of Guwahati, I was looking forward to having an eventful night as well! My new friend Kabyashree took me to Nehru Park to get some incredible street food that I couldn’t wait to try!
Our first stop was to get some momos and some pani. The momos came with a hot red chili sauce and ketchup. The first momo I had was spicy and filled with tender pieces of chicken and onion, which contrasted nicely with the soft exterior. I loved the red chili sauce! I liked it a lot better than the ketchup. Next, I took a sip of the pani, which was boiling hot! Once it cooled down a bit, I could really taste the spices in it, including ginger and mint.
There were around 25 vendors selling food in the immediate area. Next, I went for some bhel puri, which is a type of chaat that contains potatoes, puffed rice, peanuts, onions, and papdi. It also had some tamarind chutney in it, which completely changed the game! I loved the peanuts and the puffed rice in it! The dish is crunchy, light, refreshing, and a little sweet from the tamarind, and the spices balance each other out really well. At only 30 rupees/roughly $0.43 U.S., it’s practically a steal!
We went with some fresh sugarcane juice next to cleanse our palates. It was extremely sweet and refreshing. It only cost us 10 rupees/$0.14 U.S., so we were still at less than one U.S. dollar!
My next dish was Kolkata-style chicken biryani with an egg, which I popped immediately. This amazing layered rice dish contained tons of different flavors and spices and seemed to have been made from a finer-grain basmati rice. The chicken had a delicious glaze on it and was outstanding! I couldn’t get enough of it! And it only cost 60 rupees, or about $0.86 U.S.
Next, we stopped at Tasty Truck, where we tried some chow, which is a noodle dish. I went with a huge amount of spicy chicken chow for only 50 rupees/roughly $0.72 U.S. It’s basically an Indian version of Chinese noodles. The chicken inside was deep-fried pieces of chicken lollipop. It was so rich in spices and also contained carrots and onion along with the chilies. The chilies had a nice amount of heat without being too hot. The flavors were potent, yet balanced. It was outstanding!
After the chow, we were both stuffed. My suggestion is to get to Nehru Park early in the evening if you want to have dinner here. I arrived around 8 and by 9, everything was closing.
But even though our stomachs were packed to capacity, we still had room for dessert! Kabyashree took me to a stall selling Oreo waffles with chocolate sauce, whipped cream, crushed Oreos, and chocolate chips on top. This rich and decadent creation is cut into 9 pieces. It’s an Oreo overload! The sweet waffle batter is really nice and the whipped cream is almost like ice cream! It’s really thick. The dish has lots of Indian touches to it and it’s something you can only get here! It cost us 100 rupees, or roughly $1.43 U.S.
