In 1721, the famous imperial court architect von J. B. Fischer von Erlach (1656-1723) published his book 'Entwurf einer Historischen Architektur'. It was one of the first attempts to describe the history of world architecture. The book contains 86 engravings based on his drawings. Among other things, the book shows some of the famous monuments of the Roman World. Fischer's drawings are often not very accurate, as het wasn't always well informed about buildings in Egypt for instance. His depiction of Dioclatian' s Palace at Spalato (Split in Croatia) on the other hand is more accurate, as it was well preserved and stood more or less 'in his neighborhood'. The Colossus of Mount Athos never existed, it was a project proposed by the architect of Alexander the Great.
In this video, the engravings based on Fischer's drawings are interpreted using A.I. Of course, this is not always a historically accurate representation of the monuments, but rather we learn how people in the early 18th Century imagined the Roman World.
