After over six hours of traveling from Albina earlier in the day, my boy Imro and I had finally arrived at Browns-Mountain in Brownsweg, Suriname. Come with us as we set off to have some out-of-this-world Surinamese barbecue and taste some beers in a local supermarket!
The largest lake in all of Suriname is located at Browns-Mountain. It’s a man-made lake that was created in 1964 after a dam was built. The lake filled up in just two months and covered an area that used to be forest, so there are a lot of dead trees sticking up out of the water!
The road to Brownsweg isn’t great but we set off to go have dinner in town. The food in Suriname is diverse and includes Javanaese, Indian, Chinese, Dutch, African, and native Surinamese food. There’s so much variety and it’s all super tasty!
On our way down the muddy, dirt road, we spotted a boa winding its way in the darkness. There’s never-ending wildlife in Suriname! After arriving in Brownsweg, we looked for a restaurant selling barbecue. We found a small hut-like restaurant selling some. It was super authentic village life!
My meal was chicken with peanut sauce, and fries topped with mayo and ketchup. The chicken had a very Indonesian flavor. The chicken was amazing and the peanut sauce was incredible. It was smoky, with a charred flavor and crispy skin. I loved how fresh it was! It was like sweet and sour chicken.
The fries were amazing with the peanut sauce as well. I couldn’t stop eating it! The meal was like Southern barbecue with an Indonesian twist. The only bad part is that it was hotter inside than outside!
From there, I wanted to find some beer. There are lots of different ones, including varieties from France and a local Parbo bier. We got a Parbo and some Atlas beers. We bought six in total! They came to a little under $8 USD. We tried them in the supermarket!
We started with the Atlas Ultra Strong, which is 14% alcohol. It had a different color and was OK. It was very strong and wasn’t my favorite. The Parbo 5% was a perfect palate cleanser after the Atlas Ultra Strong. The Atlas 12% was better than the 14% but still not good. I could feel them already!
The Chiller Lime was like a lime juice and was another nice palate cleanser. Then we tried the Atlas 8.5%, which was the best. It was light and really nice.
I checked out some of the clothing in the supermarket, which included camouflage hats and shoes. You can even buy a machete! There were also garments that people wrap around their head or neck, and women wear as a skirt.
The guy cut me a meter and a half. It only cost me $3 USD. It would be great for protecting my neck from the sun! Meanwhile, we gave away the rest of our beer. We didn’t need the rest of it.
I learned that there are a whopping 8,000 supermarkets in Suriname and that they’re mostly run by the local Chinese community. They’re everywhere!
I hope you enjoyed coming with me to explore Brownsweg at night! If you did, please give this video a thumbs up, leave a comment, and subscribe to my channel so you don’t miss any of my upcoming travel/food adventures!

You guys love peanut sauce but that is because of Java.
Thank God for Indonesia.
Hey, what's up everyone?
This is David Hoffman from David's been here in really hot Suriname
with my friend Imero from Jenny Tours.
Today we're actually in the interior at the biggest lake.
Now this lake was created in 1964 when they created a dam
and then the lake actually just was formed in like two months, right?
And you see in the middle of the lake there's like a bunch of trees
so that was all forest.
And today we're going to the Brunswick which means the Brunsway which is the town.
And we're gonna go there and eat some food.
What are we gonna eat?
Do you have any idea?
No, no.
Barbecue, Chinese?
Yes, yes.
All right, we're just gonna go explore, eat some food, maybe have a beer.
Let's see.
Okay.
Let's go.
Yeah, so the road getting here is really bad.
So hopefully we don't get too much mud on us right now.
But I think we're good right here.
All right, let's get in this car.
So the food here in Suriname is super diverse.
You have Javanese which is like Indonesian food.
You have delicious Indian food and you have Chinese food.
And then you have, you know, some Dutch food.
You have African food.
You have native food.
So I mean huge mix in diversity.
I mean so delicious and so much variety.
Never-ending variety.
I've tried so much food on this trip so far.
I've been here four days and I'm very excited to see what we're gonna try now.
I just know it's a village.
It's gonna be dark because obviously it's nighttime.
There's not that many lights.
And if you see in front of us, there's basically no lights.
This road is just like a super muddy road.
A lot of potholes in the middle of the jungle.
Whoa, okay.
So he just saw a poisonous snake.
It's right there.
Whoa.
It's a boa.
Yeah, boa.
Boa constrictor right there.
I mean still, it'll bite you.
Yeah, that's the thing about Suriname.
You can see wildlife like literally every second.
So many different things out here.
This is a jungle.
Only like two or three main roads.
And that is it.
Okay, we are now at the Bronswerk.
It's a brownstone.
It's a maroon village with something like 2,000 peoples.
Yeah.
So what we're gonna do is just look for a restaurant, right?
Yeah, we're gonna look.
Hopefully some barbecue.
Let's see.
So these are like hut restaurants.
Like roadside hut restaurants.
That's barbecue?
That's good.
I don't know.
Whatever you think.
The barbecue grill.
Oh, wow.
Let's ask.
So we're having a lot of trouble trying to find some food right now for some reason.
Every place just has like rice and like some fish from the lake that has a lot of bones.
This guy right here has a barbecue.
But he's finished already.
Okay.
Yes, he pulled all of the meat.
Oh, it's not in there?
No, no.
Oh.
Yeah, they pull the barbecue.
This barbecue is already.
Wow.
And this is what we're eating tonight.
Right here.
In this one table barbecue restaurant.
Really all these restaurants are more like takeout restaurants.
So we decided, you know what?
Let's just try to see if one of them has a table.
This one does.
Has barbecue.
Barbecue is in the back.
The guy's bringing it out right now.
And yeah, I mean this is what it's like, you know?
Super, super village life right here.
My man out here with the barbecue.
Okay, our dinner has arrived.
And here we have it.
This is like surinamian barbecue.
Basically, it's chicken with peanut sauce.
Here on the side, we have french fries with mayonnaise and ketchup.
And I can't wait to dive into this chicken.
Where is the chicken?
Bones?
No bones?
It straight up tastes like Indonesian food.
No?
This one's like Java.
Yeah, pretty amazing barbecue actually.
I love the chicken.
Chicken is so fresh.
And the best part about it is that peanut sauce.
You guys love peanut sauce, but that is because of Java.
Surinam barbecue.
Wow.
Such a mix of flavors here.
The variety is insane.
We have the nice peanut sauce.
You have that crispy burnt taste.
Smoky as well.
Juicy.
I mean this, this, you know, this chicken was like literally raised right here, right?
The peanut dressing.
Thank God for Indonesia.
Beside the chicken, we have some of the fries.
Wow.
The peanut sauce.
Wow.
I guess we have my last piece.
I mean, what I'm going to do is probably mix some of the french fries with the peanut sauce.
It's just phenomenal.
The peanut sauce they're making here in Surinam.
I haven't had peanuts like this.
I mean, I've had some good ones in Thailand, but never like this.
Man, this chicken is so good.
Yeah, man.
I love it.
Super tasty.
The only problem in here is there's no fan.
I'm starting to melt again.
It's almost like a sweet and sour chicken that has been on the barbecue.
But I need more chicken, man.
Now we're doing the chicken.
Just mix the fries inside the sauce.
Wow, this sauce is so delicious.
You're gonna take it away?
I'm not taking it away because I think it's best right now.
I'm still really hungry.
When you guys come here, I highly recommend telling the guy,
you know, forget the mayo, forget the ketchup.
Just give me the peanut sauce.
It feels like I'm having southern barbecue, but with an Indonesian twist.
My man, that was too good.
Thanks, guys.
Wow, the food was delicious, but the environment was a little too much for me.
I mean, there was no air conditioning in there.
No fan.
I mean, it was hotter in there than it is outside.
It was like baking.
I think what we're gonna do now is just go around town a little bit.
See what there is.
Probably go to the supermarket, buy some beers.
And show you guys what the beers are of Suriname.
There's so many different beers.
There's the Atlas beer, which is from France that has like from 8% up to 16.
There's four different varieties.
And then they have the main beer, which is the portable beer.
And that's like the most generic beer, like 5% alcohol.
Not my favorite.
I like the more stronger ones.
And there's a few other ones.
Let's see what they got.
Let's do this.
All right, here we are.
What is this?
It's called Super Louie.
Super Louie.
What's up, guys?
You good?
Yes, we're gonna get the main beer, Parvo.
Yeah, let's get the main beer.
That's a lot of beers.
All right, so we got a few of the Parvos.
They also have the Atlas.
And then they have like a Guinness that they make for this place.
It's a Guinness style.
They also have like another Belgian style.
And they have the Malta.
I don't like...
I'm good with those.
Let me try these and some of the Atlas ones.
Two.
And three.
Okay.
So we're gonna try seven different beers.
Six, six different beers.
Okay, okay.
That's fine.
That's good by me.
It's like 68.50.
So the total is like a little under eight dollars.
Yeah.
Wanna try here?
Yes.
Okay, let's try here.
We're gonna try it right here in the supermarket.
All right, so we got three different Atlas's, right?
Atlas, Atlas, Atlas.
We didn't get the strongest one.
I've tried it before and I think it's just way too strong.
16%.
We don't need that right now.
But we still have 14 to 12, eight and a half.
We have the Parvo.
This is Chiller Line.
This is also Parvo.
And this is Parvo, but this is different than this one.
Yeah, it's different, yes.
It's different?
Okay, okay.
So one's in a can, one's in a bottle.
Let's start.
How do we start?
Start with the strong one.
The strongest first?
Yes.
You think so?
Yeah.
Okay, Atlas 14.
Look at the color.
It's so different.
Cheers, my friend.
Yeah, it's okay.
My favorite.
This feels like this, the Atlas brand,
is like a super mass-produced strong beer that everybody can drink.
That's it.
Oh, we're gonna have to finish it, huh?
Out.
So we're trying the Parvo now.
So next up, we have the Parvo.
Cheers.
This is actually perfect to cleanse my palate from that thing.
Because that thing I didn't like.
I didn't like the Atlas 14 at all.
Oh, light.
5%?
Oh my god, I'm still baking.
This guy doesn't have air conditioning either, huh?
He does, yeah.
Oh, he does?
I guess because this is a big shop that I'm like dying.
All right, next up.
All right, so we're gonna jump on the Atlas 12%.
Not too much, not too much.
Yes, it's like better than the 40%.
Yeah, it's better.
It's because it's less alcohol.
But still not good.
Oh, some of these like strong beers, you can feel them fast.
Luckily, we ate right now.
All right, lime, no?
Cheers.
It just tastes like it tasted.
Lime?
That's what I figured.
It says lime on it.
Yeah, it's like a lime juice.
Nice palate cleanser.
Sorry, I couldn't get it down.
This is the Atlas, what is this thing?
Atlas 12?
No, actually 8.5, 8.5.
Cheers.
Prost.
These are the best of all those.
Yeah, the lighter one.
8.5%, pretty good?
Yes.
Not bad at all.
Always serve cold.
And the last one we have is another parbo.
Give it to everybody.
We're going to give the beer away because we don't need to drink it all.
I'm good.
I actually wanted to see what they have over here.
I like the army hats, but this is the army.
You guys, this is you guys?
No, I don't know about that.
You got some of these like camo shoes.
So I just want to let you guys know here in Suriname,
there's over 8,000 supermarkets.
And most of them are run by Chinese, the Chinese community.
As you see, they all have similar things.
They have like sections of clothing and they have food on the other side.
And here, I mean, for me, the coolest thing is all this like super camo,
especially this one.
This is like for the mosquitoes and the flies, right?
So I can't put it on right.
Let's see what else they got.
Look at this.
Look at this machete.
Wow.
You can buy a machete here.
What else they got?
There's never any things here.
Huge hammers, beer.
You got friends now?
You want a drink?
Have some, have some.
What do you want?
Oh, you guys say hi?
I bought you a beer, dude.
I bought you a beer.
Careful, careful.
We're looking for Pangi.
Pangi?
Yes.
What's Pangi?
Okay, so that's what the women wraps around her head and also like as a skirt, right?
So you want me to buy one?
Yeah?
Can I get that one?
Can we check it out?
Okay, let's try that.
Can I see it?
15?
Yes.
Oh, this is how long it is.
Oh, okay.
So this is how long it is and then he's going to cut it for me.
So basically, you use it to either wrap it around your head to keep it cool,
put it around your neck so you don't get the sun in your neck or just put it as a skirt.
So you cut me, what, a meter and a half?
So that's like four and a half feet, right?
Something like that?
Maybe like this one, on your neck.
Yes, it's good.
Nice.
Okay.
I want to put it on my head though.
Hold on, on my head, on my head.
Oh, like that.
Oh, but look, it's breaking.
So this is the maroon colors?
Maroon, right?
Yeah, they like to use it.
They love it.
Like that?
Is that right?
No.
Nah, it doesn't fit good, dude.
Yeah, you like it?
I like it more like this.
Like that.
Then I need to cover my neck.
It's like that, right?
I would do like this.
Like a sultan, right?
Can I walk around like this?
Is that allowed?
Yeah.
20 to 50 for this.
20 to 50.
So you're talking about three US dollars.
So I don't know what's going on right there.
But everybody's talking.
I can't understand anything.
It's all good.
So many languages here.
But yeah, that was a cool experience there at the supermarket.
I mean, we really experienced the supermarket.
I could have gone out, all out and eaten around there.
But I didn't need to eat any of that stuff.
Like mostly junk food.
And then you have the waters, the clothing, you know, supplies, material, beer.
And the beers weren't that bad.
I mean, pretty good overall.
I like the 8.5.
Anything more would be too much.
I really enjoyed getting this.
You know, this thing is really cool.
It's like a little scarf.
But also use it, you know, to protect your neck from the sun.
I burned my neck today a little bit.
And yeah, guys, I mean, this is basically what we did tonight.
We went out to the village.
We had barbecue, went to the supermarket, tried some beer.
I mean, it's not that big of a place.
So when you come here, you can do this.
You know, obviously go with your guide.
Don't go alone.
Go around.
Eat some food.
Drink some beers.
Experience the supermarket.
Like I said before, over 8,000 supermarkets here in Suriname.
And they're all run by Chinese families.
It's really, really like mind-blowing.
You know, 8,000.
But everywhere you look, it's another one.
Like Wang Fang, something Chinese.
And then the name of the supermarket.
That's it.
And if you guys are thinking about coming to Suriname,
