Designing a living room, how hard can it be? It’s just possibly the most publicly accessible spot, the heart and soul of the house, and the most lived-in area. No pressure, right? For Levina from Studio Talk and first-time home owner/client, Bulan; yes.
“It was a smooth sail,” said Bulan, a description that is rather unheard of for the rest of the world during that period. The project kicked off during the height of the pandemic; most communication was done online. The time difference between the designer and the client also did not make it any easier (Levina was stuck on the other side of the planet). So, how did they manage to pull it off? Touching every base; immaculate progress, beautiful design, flawless finish. A beautiful, cozy, fully functional, open living space — home run.
When we were designing, they were a newlywed couple.
Brief me the time I met Levina and her friends from Studio Talk was
I want a homey house.
I want his house, even though it's already occupied, it's still beautiful and not stiff at all.
So cozy, we can comfortably stay inside his house.
We want to make her dream come true, of course, with her husband as well.
But it also poses the challenge of how we're going to check off all the boxes
functionally and aesthetically.
Hello, I'm Levina from Studio Talk.
I am one of the founders as well as the designer of this project.
Hello, I'm Bulan. I'm the owner of this house.
Welcome to RC House.
So basically, the brief is quite straightforward from the client.
They wanted to create a space that is cozy as well as vibrant.
Yet it can also be timeless.
Actually, the vibe I'm going for is more of a touch of,
Maybe now it would be called mid-century modern.
With an eclectic twist.
Overall open-plan living,
Combining one space with multiple activities at the same time.
From the dining and kitchen area, we can also see toward the TV.
While cooking, we watched TV at the same time.
The living area was intentionally made lower.
So even if I were sitting in the living room,
It truly feels like you can appreciate it just in that moment.
Behind the sofa there is a storage unit we intentionally built.
so that we can better minimize clutter.
Another addition makes it somewhat like a room divider.
but without having to close it.
There's a game involving three aspects.
shape, color, and texture.
They really must connect with each other.
We want this place to be harmonious.
There is still a thread connecting them,
but the materials from the flooring, from the wall,
its built-in furniture, from the sofa,
They are all completely different.
With its touch of concrete,
the touch of several tiles
That's right, we deliberately made the patterns different.
Their colors complement each other.
but it also has to be vibrant at the same time.
We have a lighter wood color combination.
There is something darker.
There's also metal, the fabric of it,
Suede sama canvas.
We intentionally mixed and matched the carpets as well.
the more per pattern,
The location is also more dynamic.
Let me introduce some different marbles.
Suppose we use grey marble in the kitchen,
However, in our powder room, we used deep orange marble.
We'll keep using white tiles as well.
So there are quite a lot of combinations to think about.
Again, because everything must be balanced,
There are several materials that we use.
Several times, in various places.
Just like the flooring in this kitchen,
The same material we use in the living room area.
These are grey cut tiles.
deliberately cut into pieces
and made into a herringbone pattern
to remain dynamic and as if there is movement.
But in the living room,
We deliberately used its application on the wall.
And its pattern is more straight and horizontal.
Its main living area allows in natural light,
It still feels very much like an indoor-outdoor space.
We deliberately chose the floor's color that way.
and also texture.
Using the actual materials used outdoors.
The texture isn't really smooth.
On both sides are floor-to-ceiling windows.
That makes me happy,
That outdoor area gives a nice vibe to the space.
The designs I like always have a twist to them.
The room is so far square-shaped.
It keeps giving quite a bit of round elements.
Make it stand out.
It's more about wanting contrast.
The stairs we designed,
We intentionally made the width different.
which eventually expanded to the TV area as well
and also to the area below the stairs.
Beneath the stairs, we intentionally built a bench.
Ah, a bit of forgotten space
Something like this could actually be made into something.
So in the end, we made this mini bar
and then they were actually very happy, they really were
Using that place for daily activation.
As much as possible, there should be no dead areas within this space.
When we designed the kitchen,
How can we make this kitchen?
the heart of the house
And then finally we decided to make an island
so that the circulation is more pleasant.
Because the right and left sides are indeed
The outdoor corridor route is already available.
So it feels like everything is balanced.
Then we deliberately made the bedrock wood texture
lighter one
So from the direction of the living area toward the kitchen
It has a little depth.
Beneath it, we intentionally made it that way
The same tone as the flooring.
So we can really express ourselves
the marble itself.
At that time, we actually spent quite a long time too.
Finally got this marble.
At the end of this,
Wow, we're both really satisfied, aren't we?
because the color is truly vibrant.
Perhaps what makes it unique as well
Even though it was us who designed it,
But they also have personalities.
what they brought into this house.
This huge couch,
Actually, I bought this myself.
The design was already finalized before collaborating with Levina.
Then I immediately sent a message,
Would this fit if placed here?
In our living room later?
Maybe one of the ones driving the design
Also this L-shaped sofa, you know.
So it's like we build around it.
There are many lighting options here.
like pendants,
Then there's the wall light,
table lamp
Absolutely, we handpick
represent the client as well
yet it still conforms to its concept.
For the selection from Loose Furniture itself,
His collection was compiled from
Some local brands are also international.
A decent source from various places,
As simple as I searched from the craftsmen in Jogja,
custom made everything.
I'll try my best.
The kayak was quite contrasting today.
Very satisfied.
Very proud of this place.
So happy because I feel
This space is successful for
elevate the client's lifestyle
If it's up to me,
The takeaway might be choosing a designer.
those who can work together pleasantly
That's crucial, isn't it?
Working hours with Studio Talk,
I feel that the communication is seamless.
Ideas from each match individually
energy
Maybe if I woke up on my own,
my spectrum
I only know it's like a material option.
From A to D.
But once I worked together with the designer,
I know, kayak
Oh, so its spectrum is even broader.
A to Z.
