Spring 2026 MacKenzie-Childs Inspired Decor Using Dollar Tree Items | 4 Spring Dollar Tree DIYs
Welcome back to my channel, The Crafty Quinn. If you love that high-end Mackenzie Childs look but
not the price tag, these crafts are for you. I'm sharing four spring-inspired DIYs using
Dollar Tree items. Plus, wait until you see the last one. In today's video, I'm doing a giveaway,
so please stay tuned throughout the video for more details about that. So DIY number one,
we are starting off with this chick shadow box. I love this pattern paper that I got from Hobby
Lobby. It reminded me very much of Mackenzie Childs when I saw this first years ago, and I
didn't know what to do with it until I was making this video. So first, I used this shadow box that
I got at Dollar Tree to trace out the shape on top of this craft paper. So this box is a five
and a half by five and a half box, and they are normally found in sets of three at Dollar Tree,
but each box is purchased individually. So I do want to make sure to note that.
And I did leave a little bit more kitten content for you today. This is my kitten Pumpkin. She's
seven months old. We found her on Thanksgiving at my husband's grandparents' farm. She has been
through so much, but she is now a healthy kitten, and we're so excited to welcome her into the
So just measuring out the scrapbook paper for this box, I just had to use that box to trace
out the shape that I needed, and then I just kind of had to keep cutting and keep cutting a little
bit. You can also use a paper slicer to get more exact cuts, but I did also lay the box on top of
it and just kind of draw a line just so I could get a straight edge to cut the paper down a little
bit more. And so basically I had to just keep working with it until it seemed like it was going
to fit. They don't make it easy to cut the paper in these shadow boxes at Dollar Tree for sure.
So eventually when I got to the end, I ended up using my exacto knife
and just making sure I got an exact cut there. You might hear my kitten purring because she is
in my lap, so maybe you'll have some kitten ASMR. So this is light blue, and it is from FolkArt,
and it is a satin finish I think it says on the bottle, but this color, I absolutely love this
for spring. I feel like this is going to be my go-to this year, but I'm just using this to coat
the mostly the inside of the box and the outside. And I did go through and I painted all three boxes
because I thought I was going to make three shadow boxes, but then I just really liked this
one, so I'm going to save those two boxes over there. And this was not ideal way to use the
craft glue stick, but I just kind of grabbed whatever thing I had close by to lay this on top.
So I put the scrap of paper inside of the shadow box and just pushed down until it stuck. So I used
to use a craft bond glue stick, but it shifts around too much because you're supposed to be
able to move it, and then I felt like it didn't have a strong hold, so now I'm just using a regular
craft glue stick. So this is Summer Porch from FolkArt. I absolutely love this color. I use this
I think every summer. I used a little too much paint on this Dollar Tree chick though, so I am
going to take off some of the excess and put it on my paint tray. All of this I got from Dollar
Tree, the paint brush, the wooden chick, even the little the paint tray as well. I included some more
painting for you guys today just so I could leave in the kitten footage too. She was very observant
throughout this craft. So once I had the chick completely painted, I used this Waverly Pumpkin
color. It's a chalk paint, and I felt like it was the perfect orange shade to go with my chick.
So I just painted the beak, and now I'm painting the legs right now. It is such a stark difference
in color that I felt like maybe I needed to do a little bit more to the beak and the feet, so then
I took my Waverly Antique Wax and I just used a teeny tiny paint brush, just a really skinny thin
one, and kind of drew an outline on the inside. I did a little outline in the beak, and I know it's
hard to see from this angle. I should have zoomed in a little bit more, so my apologies. But I did
draw basically an outline of the the legs and the nose, and then I realized it was a little bit too
dark, and it's so hard to tell from this angle, but it was too dark, so I just kind of like
tapped it with my finger and just kind of faded it a little bit. But then we are going to distress
this a little bit too with my Antique Waverly Wax, and I thought let's give it some rustic charm.
So I feel like the look I'm going for today is more like rustic Mackenzie Childs if
that's a thing, which I feel like some of the vintage patterns of hers are. There's a lot of
browns and whatnot. So we are using some squares. These are these little tiny wood squares from
And since this is a shadow box, I really wanted this chick to kind of have that 3D standout look,
and I think mission accomplished. So for some finishing touches, I wanted to add some flowers. I
felt like with a lot of Mackenzie Childs stuff, I saw a lot of flowers, some of them kind of 3D
looking flowers kind of standing out, so I thought this also made things pop. And we are done with
our first craft. This is the end result of DIY number one. This is a chick 3D shadow box,
and I have to say I really love this checker pattern, and you're going to see more of that
throughout. DIY number two. So this, I grabbed one of Dollar Tree's, I guess, I don't know what you
call it, one of those Easter eggs, a large Easter egg shape, not a regular wood cutout, but they're
really thick. And there was a carrot shape, so I grabbed one of those too. I ended up not doing
anything with that, but with the large egg wood cutout, well, large egg wood piece, we are going
to trace, which you just saw me do, and I'm using more of this checker pattern scrapbook paper.
Also got this from Hobby Lobby, and I'm using more of my glue stick. And again, this was a bad idea,
as I quickly learned to do my glue stick on top of the project that I'm about to lay this on,
because then I got it on the wood piece, and then what was on the wood piece transferred to my
scrapbook paper to the front of it, and that didn't look so great. So I had a little panic attack when
I flipped it over, and saw that I had glue on the front of this, and it was in the shape of the egg,
and I realized, oh no. So yeah, so I quickly learned my lesson because I hadn't used a glue stick in a
while, but luckily it did come off. I just kept kept rubbing it off, and it just, it did eventually
come off, so it ended up not mattering. So this is a Dollar Tree calendar that I'm going to be
giving away. This is one of them, and then I'm so excited that I'm going to be using this in today's
project. So this calendar, I'm so glad I found these at Dollar Tree, but I'm using the April
month flowers, which is awesome because it's my birthday month, but for this giveaway, I wanted to
make sure you guys know the rules. So I did find these Dollar Tree calendars. They're about two
bucks each now at Dollar Tree, so I managed to score some extra ones at my Dollar Tree, and so
if you want to enter in, we have three sets of Dollar Tree 2026 calendars. I'll show you the
sets at the end, but there's going to be three winners. So to enter, make sure you're based in
the U.S., because I can't ship this internationally, but make sure first you're subscribed to my channel
to enter. Comment below your favorite craft from this video, and also tell me what types of crafts
you usually love to make. And that's it. It is free to enter. All I'm going to do is, I'm going to be
reaching out to the winners to ask for their addresses. I'll be replying in the comments. If
you are a winner, I will reply, and make sure it's actually me responding to you, because there's a
lot of scams out there, and just know that I will not be asking you for any payment or anything. So
if anybody comments or says that they're me and asks you for payment, that is not me.
So because I've seen that happen with other crafters and things like that, but I will be
reaching out to you personally. I will be replying to your comment to let you know that you won, but
I'll also be announcing the winners as well, but these will be randomly drawn winners. So those are
all the rules, and that's all there is, and the winners will be chosen at random, and I will be
announcing the winners in a few days just to give enough people time to enter.
So using this calendar page from the April month of the Dollar Tree calendar that I showed you for
2026, so I did just kind of cut out those flowers, and then I laid it on top, and then I kind of made
a crease, and then where the crease was, I'm just going through with my exacto knife and just making
sure that it is exactly the right shape of the egg. And once I'm happy, I learned my lesson, and I took
the cardboard backing from this Dollar Tree calendar and laid the paper on there to use my
craft glue stick with. So it was basically a perfect fit, and we're just going to lay it down, make sure
it adheres, and this glue stick actually worked great. So then I just wanted to add a little bit
of trim that kind of reminded me of like a Mackenzie Child style, besides the flowers at the
bottom, which I did see like an Easter egg had the flowers at the bottom, like 3D flowers, so
that's kind of what I was thinking when I was making this craft. And then this is a pack of
trim, burlap trim, that I got from Dollar Tree a couple years ago, so I am using some things from
my stash today, but they are things that I've been wanting to use. So we're just going to glue that
on there, and then some of the paper didn't, I had a little bit of excess paper, so I'm just using my
finger sander and just kind of swiping over it, and then it is perfectly adhered to the shape of
the egg. So any bit that just runs over like that, you're just going to want to swipe over it, and then
voila! And now it is exactly how I envisioned. So I am in love with how this egg turned out,
I love it you guys. So let's move on to DIY number, yeah, number three. So for DIY number three,
we have this wooden chick from Dollar Tree. They have this I think every year, at least as long as
I've been crafting from Dollar Tree stuff, but we are going to be taking this folk art summer porch
color and just painting the entire chick with it. I have to say I do love that this wood cutout,
or whatever you want to call it, has some graininess to it. You can actually see like
the wood grain on it, even though it's faux wood, but it does make for an interesting texture when
you're going through and trying to distress this. So I don't even think I needed to do necessarily
two coats on this, because as you can tell, I used a lot, a lot of paint on the first go around. So I
really had to let it sit for a while and just let this dry, because I didn't want the crackled look
on this. So after it was cured, then I'm just taking my Waverly Antique Wax, and we are going
to use my chibi brush to distress this. So I just take a little bit from the lid, draw a few x's on
paper towel, get the excess off, and then just start swiping downwards on this. And I start at
the edge, and then go downwards, and it kind of catches the edge, as I like to say, and gives it a
nice look. But I've also tried with this one, I tried to not let the brush stop anywhere in the
middle, so that it just looked like clean lines. And so I tried to just make sure to keep going
all the way down from one side to the other. The feet were fun as well, it almost looks like the
feet were kind of muddy, and almost like, like a rusty kind of color. But I realized that, yeah, if I
just started from the bottom and just kept going, just throughout without stopping, that was really
the better look for this chick. So then once I had that pattern going, I just kept going throughout
the entire thing until it was finished. And then the antique wax really caught the grain of this.
So for this, I did kind of measure this ribbon. So this, this Mackenzie Childs inspired ribbon,
I found this at Michael's, uh, in, uh, I want to, I'm not sure how long this, the spool on this thing
is, but I can show you at some point. I think I pulled it up, but basically I just cut off a piece
that was around the size of the, of the neck of the chick that looked long enough to cover the neck.
And then I kind of wanted to do like an x-shape. Yeah, it looks like it's about three yards. So
I kind of like to put two pieces of ribbon in like an x-shape and then cinch them in the middle,
and that's kind of my, my go-to. But I wanted to give this kind of a fun look, so I was like, what
if I just try cutting out just like on an angle at the end of each and just see how it would come out?
So I'm just trying to test out a different camera angle for this, so apologies if it looks weird, but I just
wanted to give this a try so you could really get more of a feel for what I'm trying to do here.
And I thought maybe it would just show up a little bit better, but I'm noticing my, my hands, my hands
are still covering things, so maybe this isn't the best angle, but just wanted to give it a shot.
So I do take my jute twine and cinch this in the middle, and you just pull it as tight as you can
until your knuckles turn white, and then you know you've got it. And I apparently did this very,
very tight on the first time I did this. Normally I feel like when I cinch it, I have a little bit
of like wiggle room and I can move the ribbon around, and that's how I know I didn't cinch it
right, but with this I could not move it at all. And then my kitten was in my lap and she saw the
twine. Oh my gosh, pumpkin, she's a troublemaker. So it looks like, like a bit of a bow tie
with a fun shape. And then I kind of wanted to give the chick maybe a collar, but kind of to show
that like the bow tie is going all the way around. So I just, I did double up the ribbon, so I just
doubled it in half, I mean, well folded it in half, and then just cut it. And then we're just
going to glue it to the back here. I wanted to make sure I had just about an inch or so just to
fully hold this in place. It didn't lay completely flat because it's just not a perfect edge there,
but you do what you can. That is what hot glue is for. So then we're just going to hot glue down
the bow tie. This is really just a quick and easy fun little project. And I took more of these paper
flowers. Oh yeah, I forgot to mention these are paper flowers from the paper studio. And I found
these at Hobby Lobby. I never buy these full price. I always try to get them like the 30 or 40% off
time. So when I see that they're 30 or 40% off, I grab them. So I have packs of these. I feel like
I have a drawer full at this point, but I love these. They're so great. I used these for like
Mother's Day projects last year, a few years ago, I guess. But here's the finished look of the chick.
So if you see that ribbon at Michael's, now you know what you can use it for.
So when I saw this funny happy Easter sign at Dollar Tree, I knew immediately that I could
do some Mackenzie Chiles inspired decor with this. And of course, you know, there's three
different color in this like checkered pattern here. But basically what I decided to do with
this is the white squares could stay white, but then I just painted over them. And then there
were a lighter shade, kind of stripey pattern. And I just painted over that with white as well.
And then the only squares that I'm painting black are the darkest color ones. Because I'm like,
they're already like a darker shade anyway, so I'm just going to paint them with my black ink
color from Waverly and just completely coat it. So I did. So these bunnies are glitter.
And instead of taking off all of the glitter and then potentially messing up the bunnies,
I just decided to paint over the glitter. And really, I mean, the glitter is covered,
so it does work. And then I just made sure that I wasn't dipping my brush full of glitter back
into the paint bottle. And that's what these little paint trays are great for.
So I mostly started with the ears and kind of did a little diagonal shape, but I felt like I kind of
have to make up for some of the shapes as I as I went along, if I accidentally covered them or
something like that. But you just kind of do your best. It kind of felt like I was doing paint by
numbers or like a coloring book. And it was really relaxing, super therapeutic. So if you have a lot
of time on your hands, this is definitely the project for you. But this I had to I had to spread
out the painting of this across like a couple nights because, like, I felt like I was holding
it close to my face to paint it. And so it took me a little bit longer because I was trying to
capture this on my camera. But I just felt like I could really do the lines better holding it
close up to my face. I started off with like a larger brush and then I realized it was too large
because these bunny ears and just bunnies on the side are much smaller. So I decided to go with a
much, much smaller brush and I tried to find like a small angled brush, but I don't think that's
completely necessary for this. And, you know, with them already being squares on here, it gives you a
great outline to work with. So yes, I did this for all three. I thought about potentially leaving
the colors in there and then I was like, no, Mackenzie Childs is more like black and white
throughout as I'm really getting into that decor style and seeing what that's all about. I'm learning.
So yeah, I just repeated this for all three bunnies and it definitely took some time.
And I did take off the little cotton tail at the end and then once the bunny was done, just
glued it right back on. And then I didn't know what to do with this. I mean, it's great for if this
was an Easter sign, but I didn't necessarily want this to be an Easter sign. I figured, why not
just do like welcome spring or something like that? And then of course I couldn't find the exact
words and letters I was looking for. So I did kind of have to mix and match some wood pieces, but
you'll see. And then when I was painting this, I kept saying to myself like, happy clouds, happy
clouds. I was thinking about Bob Ross when I was painting this. Do you guys know Bob Ross, the
painter? I did not learn about that until much later in life, but I'm sad I missed that show.
So I'm using more of the light blue color from FolkArt and the spring, the spring word here, I
think I found this from Joanne's Fabrics before they closed, I want to say. It is so difficult to
find a wood cutout of the word spring at craft stores these days. I don't know why, but this
past spring season when I've been looking, I have not been able to find them. Words like welcome,
I can easily find them at any store, but it's a shame they don't have more of like the seasonal
ones like spring and summer, things like that. I don't know. So I only did one coat and I didn't
really worry about completely coating the top and bottom of this. You're only really going to
look at the front anyway. So just cover it as little or as much as you want. And then once
they're both coated to your liking, I looked for like the thickest parts of these, of the letters
and just put my hot glue down and just try to put it down right away because when you not,
when you don't put much hot glue down on these things, they dry up really quick and then you're
and then you got to peel off the hot glue. So difficult in these tiny little skinny letters,
but it gives it an interesting look. But overall, I think I covered the McKenzie Childs look with
this one. This was probably one of my favorites, even though it took the longest, you guys.
So these are the three sets of Dollar Tree calendars up for grabs. Like I said, I'm going
