Learn how to transform affordable Dollar Tree window clings into high-end fall and Halloween decor. Through four creative DIY projects, the video demonstrates how to use Mod Podge, paint, and simple craft supplies to turn basic stickers into rustic centerpieces, vintage plates, and reversible seasonal signs.
Welcome back to The Crafty Quinn. Today we're taking Dollar Tree window clings
off the windows and turning them into fall and Halloween decor.
And two of these DIYs are even reversible. So let's
get crafting. These are the window clings that
I'm mostly using today. There is one other window cling that I'm using that
is not pictured here and that is the Halloween one. And these
are exactly one dollar at Dollar Tree and I was actually surprised.
So DIY number one. We are going to turn this
everyday Dollar Tree crafter square section crate
into a kind of a Thanksgiving piece I guess.
Because this is a fall and Halloween video sure but I feel like this
qualifies more for Thanksgiving. So I'm going to give this more of a rustic
charm but without using some antique wax. I'm
taking my finger sander and after I've painted this entire crate
I'm just taking a layer of paint off of the sides.
So I'm distressing it without having to rely on any other
items to do this. So just sandpaper is fine.
I don't know if you can tell here but I was trying to hold it up so you can see
the results on the sides because it doesn't really show up
well in this video with the white paint. But so I painted the entire thing down
to kind of the top part of the inside. You
don't have to paint the entire thing because we are covering that up anyway
with some styrofoam. So floral foam. So I got this from Dollar
Tree's craft or square section. I had a couple pieces that already
worked pretty well for this. Didn't really need to cut them down too much.
So I just filled it in as much as I could and this
is the first window cling of the video. So gathered together is the one that I'm
using. It just felt, I don't know, very
appropriate for this craft. So I am taking some matte mod podge and
I found that using a foam brush was actually the best case scenario for
this because if I happened to use too much I would
just flip the brush over and just gather up the excess with the foam brush.
So I just stuck it down here and it matches well against the
white color because it is a clear see-through
window cling. So there are a couple other embellishments
from the same sticker sheet that I thought would work really well.
There's a little, I almost called this a raccoon, pine cone
and a little fall twig that I thought worked well with this.
So once I've decorated the side then I grabbed four of these
miniature pumpkins from Dollar Tree. I see these every fall and I never know
what to do with them and then I was so relieved I figured out how to
use them for this craft. So I've just been having these in my
stash and never know what to do. So I just put down a lot of hot glue
for this and it kind of melts into the floral
foam a bit and then I'm using more of this
Spanish moss that I love. Well not Spanish moss but I guess just
reindeer moss but it's like a burnt color but I'm using it for all
of my crafts this season I guess. So I just stuck it down as much as I
could and I also tried to pat it down a little bit but be careful
not to burn yourself of course because I did use
a decent amount of hot glue. Then I grabbed some Dollar Tree skewers
and they're super super sharp on the end so they went right into
the bottoms of these little pumpkins and then there's like
foam inside of each of these pumpkins so it just goes right in
and then you can use your miter shears or you can use some really sharp scissors.
Since these are skewers from Dollar Tree it doesn't take much to break them
and cut them so then that is what is holding
these pumpkins in place. I didn't think hot glue would work well for this.
I think these actually work a little bit better and this way you can just take
them off and reuse them for other crafts. So it just takes a few times with my
scissors and then snap that's it. So I did that for all four pumpkins
and then we are going to make this reversible because there was another
cute little sign from this same window cleaning sheet
that I thought would work well for the same craft
and that is the thankful and grateful side
and then just adding our two final embellishments here on the side
and we have an adorable Thanksgiving craft. I like to think of it as like four
people and a family and that's kind of what made me think of
Thanksgiving and here's what both sides look like. DIY number
two. So this is a fun craft. So I got this
from Dollar Tree's crafter square section as well
and I kind of had this piece sitting my stash
so I'm just taking a craft glue stick here because I found
some scrapbook paper that was the almost the perfect size for this and I got it
from a multi-pack of plaid uh
paper from from Hobby Lobby so it worked out really well
and I did use a decent amount because I wasn't sure
how well it was going to adhere to the wood but it actually did really well
and so this was one from the window cleaning sheet that I thought was
so adorable. Couldn't wait to use it and so this was actually the first craft I
had made and I hadn't figured out yet that the foam brushes
worked better because trying to spread this with a little tiny paintbrush is
just not the way to do it as I quickly learned. So I just used
some scrap cardstock that I had from a scrap
pack that I also got from Hobby Lobby in their paper section
and so they just whatever scraps they just throw them in a bag and they sell
them and so I I bought a couple packs of
those and they have really come in handy in a pinch.
So I just cut this down and these were the kind of things that
needed to have a background because the what they're going on is so busy this
plaid and they need to stand out. So I just glued them to
these little cardstock pieces with the mod podge
and that is what is going to help these stand out more.
So I cut it down to size and that is going to go at the top of our sign
and then I these weren't too terrible to cut.
Obviously if they had a more complex design then maybe I wouldn't be doing
this but since it's mostly just a round shape all the way around I just cut
perfectly along the sides once it was perfectly dried with the mat
mod podge. And then the fastest way to do it was to literally just
take the mat mod podge and just kind of put the cardstock right on top
and that quickly got it adhered down. So then once they were all cut
then it was time to adhere them to the scrap of paper.
So I have the that is the scrap pack there at the top
that is what I bought and that's where all of this cardstock came from.
I'm using that to hold down the top part of this sign,
weigh it down while it was all drying and then just to make sure everything
stuck I did weigh it down for a while but harvest season I thought these
pumpkins went well with the harvest. And then I just made a bow
and just stuck that on the top right and this is the end result.
I'm so happy I got to use the scrapbook paper for something because I thought
it was such a pretty design and I think it all worked well together.
DIY number three. So I'm sure you've seen these charger plates at Dollar Tree.
They have them all the time and since they're so shiny it's definitely
more difficult to paint. So I'm just trying to scratch this up a
bit with my finger sander and this will hopefully help the paint
stick to this better. So I was very thoroughly
using my my sandpaper all over this because I really wanted to make sure it
was going to stick. So I just, yeah, I did the entire thing
and then of course there was a lot of dust so I took a wet paper towel and
just wiped this thing clean. I did do that for a
while because every time I thought I was done
there was more dust and obviously I don't want that getting in my paint.
So once that's wiped then I just dried it too.
So there's a little bit of prep for this craft but I think
it works out better this way. So then I'm using some white waverly chalk paint
and I'm covering this entire plate with it. This did take
two coats for sure. So once I did my two coats of paint
I took this window cling. I thought this was a beautiful fall truck.
I really felt like it was the centerpiece focal point for this plate
and I feel like the style I'm going for is maybe like 90s
vintage plate kind of style. I know that's a very in thing right now.
So I did some Mod Podge with my foam brush, covered the entire back of it
and then we are just going to place down this fall truck
right in the center of the plate. And what's great is this plate is huge
so you can put large designs like this truck right in the middle.
There was another beautiful design on that same window cling sheet.
I was really torn between the bicycle with pumpkins in the basket or this fall
truck but I think the pumpkins won me over.
So then all the other stickers from the sheet I just decided to put them
in here as well because it just felt too...
The truck looked a little lonely so I decided to use some other embellishments
and put them on the plate as well. And this actually was a really
fun way to do this quickly was I just put a bunch of Mod Podge on my brush
and then just grab these little tiny ones that are a little bit harder to do
and just stuck them, just got the Mod Podge on them that way.
So then once I had all of my window clings down I took a very very small amount,
a very small chip brush. I used some Waverly Antique Wax.
I made sure there was not a ton of wax on this first.
Using my paper towel I got off the excess and I just dragged it along the beads
in the design of this plate. And just dragging it across like that
really made the beads stand out and that wax really helped them pop.
So you're just going to want to do this all the way around.
And if you want it even more rustic looking, more distressed, more antique,
then you could do all of this first before you even put on
any of the window clings and just distress the entire plate
if you don't want the stark white. I did also wanted to do this in more of
an ivory color but I would need to get a whole bunch of paint for that.
So I'm just making my little rustic bow here, doubled up a bunch of ribbon,
and then I'm just taking a separate piece and I'm cinching it right in the middle there
and those two ends are going to be the ends of this bow.
This is just a really super quick way to make a bow when you need it.
And then I did cut off those two ends from when I first doubled up the ribbon.
I don't want them sticking out because I only need the two ends at the bottom.
And then I wanted to put some more color behind the rustic bow at the top.
I just felt like it needed something more at the top there.
So this is some brand new Dollar Tree ribbon that is out on shelves right now.
It is very 90s looking. I love the plaid.
It's making me think like a Ralph Lauren ball plaid look.
So once all of that is cinched in the middle, I took a bunch of ribbon pieces.
So I did also add in some of the rustic pumpkin ribbon in there as well.
Kind of made more of an X shape.
And then we're just combining all of that and we're putting our rustic bow on top.
Or jute twine bow I should say.
So once all that is glued down, then this plate is done.
And here's how it turned out.
So I love how this how this turned out.
Like I wasn't sure about about this because I just felt like it needed more.
And then I just kept adding on.
The more I added on the window clings, the more I really felt like it was all coming together.
So this is the final window cling sheet.
This is the other one that was not pictured.
So I don't think this one was a dollar.
I want to say this one was maybe maybe was $1.25.
I had to look back at the receipt.
But I'm pretty sure all of these window clings were exactly one dollar.
So what's great is that this has a chalkboard side on the one side.
But then it's blank on the other side.
So you can easily make this into a reversible window frame.
And when I saw these two designs, I was kind of stuck between choosing.
I knew I had to do this this way because as a cat mom of four cats,
I really had to make sure to use the cat one.
But then I also really loved the cauldron.
So yeah, once I just picked out the best ones that went with the black cat,
I was like, okay, it's this is good to go.
And so I just this is so simple.
It's not even really a DIY.
It's just a hack, I guess, if you will.
But I just took some Mod Podge and we're just covering the entire back of the cat.
But I love this window cling.
It's just a beautifully designed one.
So I'm trying to make sure that the frame is not going to cover this cat at all.
And so you just want to leave a little bit of space
and not put it right up against the side
because the image will potentially get cut off a bit.
So make sure to leave plenty of space and put everything more towards the center.
So we have our little glitter moon here.
I feel like the moon is perfect and my dog's name is Moon.
So that represents her as well.
My dog's best friend is named Sky.
And it's just so funny because we're always like Moon and Sky are playing together.
So we added in our bat there in the top left.
And so this was the other design, this beautiful cauldron.
I wasn't even sure if it was going to fit, but it did.
And it was just too perfect not to use.
So that's why I just had to make this reversible
because there were too many beautiful designs to choose from in this window cling sheet.
So I added that one on as well to the other side with our Mod Podge.
And we're just going to put this all back together.
And you can just switch them anytime you want.
Maybe you want to put this in your kitchen.
Maybe you want to put this out for Halloween.
Or maybe you just want this up on a shelf because you love cats like I do.
So here are what both sides look like.
Thank you guys so much for watching.
