Waters/Bright vs Campbell/Humberg at the SXY Newport Beach Open
26 Video Views·Apr 7, 2026
Humana Championship Court about the start.
Kaelin Campbell gonna start it.
Let's play pickleball over there.
They may get seven points in before match point ends.
Second serve.
So we have a dink error on both courts.
Match point again for Collin and Glenn.
10-6-2.
Adam, the third seeds are dropping like flies.
Welcome back to the semifinals, Collin Johns.
Oh my goodness.
Chest bump in all.
The upstart, Lin Yang, obviously played a huge role
in this one as well.
Shocking result.
That one thing was pitching a shutout
and already the shutout is over, Adam.
They're on the board.
Two rounds, 44-0, and just like that, it's gone.
That was off the shoe tops, Adam.
Yes, it was.
Super low.
Kaelin Campbell trying to clear the body and late to do so.
Laurie got stuck and didn't take a step.
The ball just hovered there
what seemed like a couple seconds.
Laurie unable to shuffle the feet
and get in proper position.
Pesky tape.
What a first volley on the run.
Yeah, it's really nice.
And the carve there, like you could see Anna Bright,
like, I'm just gonna try to hit a 70% drive
and deal with that slice spin, and she left it high.
Nasty from Annaleigh Waters.
Laurie, I mean, she came pretty far over,
but she was already starting her recovery
and still can't get all the way back to her backhand.
That's nice from Laurie Humberg stepping over,
but that is textbook how you handle a slice
from Annaleigh Waters on her third shot.
Bent the knees, got extremely low paddle preparation
early on plane with the ball and rips through.
Kaelin wanting the-
Love the choice, don't love the execution.
Yeah, definitely a couple feet long,
but Anna Bright was pulled out to the sideline too.
So there was a lot of reasons why Kaelin Campbell
could have been successful with that lob.
Annaleigh's ball was so bad, Mari wasn't ready for it.
Yeah, it's exactly like the Cape Coral
two-handed backhand from Hayden Patrick
when we're like, oh my God,
she hit it at my chest with a soft shot.
I can't fathom that that is possible.
Oh, third shot lob, and then sends it cross court.
Hops back, lets the ball apex up around the waist
and Anna Bright fires.
They are apex predators over there, so.
Certainly are.
Yes, two.
One on Kaelin Campbell from the left side.
Not gonna matter now, we will not see the rematch.
Again, oh my.
I mean, Adam, we're standing right in front of that,
that landed one millimeter in front of the line.
I guess, I didn't really consider it,
but another way to deal with this last return
is throw up a topspin lob.
Former MLP teammate, she's seen it a lot.
Steve, Mari thinks she made it, no one's quite sure.
I'm gonna put.
Guess who gets shotgun?
Kaelin does, Kason, you're wrong, dude.
You're just wrong over there, man.
Oh my, I can't, the degree of difficulty
of that shot right there.
That thing is cut perfectly and she drove it.
Nice, big time power from both players.
Kaelin Campbell to start and Mari Humbert to finish.
Clean winner now from.
Bright has joined the party.
I mean, Kaelin Campbell is off the ground
for the split step and the ball is over her head
and she can't recover, what a shot.
Man.
Now it's Kason throwing his hands up over there.
I didn't hit it.
Really is a master class on how to deal with the slice
because nobody knifes it like Mari Humbert.
I know a lot of players go away from the slice.
She sticks with it and for good reason.
She gets a ton of benefit from that shot.
Spotty from the right from Mari Humbert
and the lead just blocks and resets
instead of countering with power.
Game point.
Just wide and the best team in the world.
Very good team.
And Megan is on and Eta Tui Onatoa.
And then we just saw what we just saw.
Heavy return from Kaelin Campbell.
Good way to start game two.
Nice, there it is.
I mean, all you, and a bright thought
for a half a piece a second,
I'm gonna take this out of the air.
The ball hits the ground and eaten up.
Good decision.
She was scared.
She was petrified.
She was in a haunted house right there
because she'd played a brilliant rally.
Man, that's unfair because that was crushed.
Rocket launcher.
Easy power for the youngster, Kaelin Campbell.
15 turns 16 in May.
So that's the one, that is a very hard shot.
We watch players like Rohrabacher do that effortlessly.
It is hard to hit that back inside out.
I'd like to see what would have happened
if that had gone over.
As a L-dubbed incredible athlete,
but she was breaking to the middle.
Probably would have got a paddle on it,
but it would have been interesting.
Heavy roll there from Kaelin Campbell.
And a little heavier everything from them
instead of sitting back and taking it.
Important.
Oh, lopser.
Marburg.
Jeez.
What a shot from Mari Humberg in the, that is,
did you hear the oohs and aahs on that return?
Yes.
From Kaelin Campbell?
Don't, don't lobserve that young lady
if she's going to pull up with returns like that.
And Humberg couldn't even snap that overhead
and still found the perfect location.
Good dink aggression.
I am totally on board with what you said, Dave.
They are a little more pizzazz on everything
and force Anna Bright-Anne Lee into a decision.
Don't hit the dead stuff and let them dictate play.
Hate that.
And you call, you call it and then you miss it.
That, that is a bad feeling.
Whoopsie from Kaelin there.
Smart move there from Anna Bright
to go all the way back cross court.
Cause Kaelin Campbell, when things get tough,
she likes to block with the backhand, not the forehand.
Uh-oh.
Oh.
Oh no.
Mari's in a tough spot.
She's trying to figure out what to do.
So we're going to try and find out if it wasn't her out.
It looked like the finger call out was late for Mari,
though her body language walking forward
gave us that impression.
That's clean again.
Oh no way!
On the two-y this time.
What is happening?
It is.
I mean.
Just, she's in a terrible spot until she isn't.
It's a pretty good volley from Kaelin Campbell there too.
Just wide the very definitive out call.
This is, this is a smart tautio here for Mari.
Little, little frustrated with a couple of things.
That was just five seconds.
It means a lot in those moments.
Six, three, one.
All right.
If that one lands.
Yes, that's the short hop.
There's no spin on that one.
The short hop off the left Nike foot.
I mean, come on now.
In there.
Tweener.
Entertainment value just didn't make it.
Off speed.
Beautiful cross body from Mari Humberg.
Oh, that's tragic there.
And Mari's, she's leaning in and has the paddle
out in front on the second ball.
Quality counter from Anna Bright,
but that is a combo platter that Mari's
going to make most of the time.
Oh, first.
That's pretty nice there on the wrist pronation.
A little bit like Christian Alshon
tries that shot sometimes too,
where everything sells that you're not going inside out
and then you just get the paddle in the right position.
Mari staring at the line and asking the patrons.
Yeah, take it.
That's a good idea.
That too.
That one misses.
Another short serve in the rim winding.
Wow, what a pull down the line.
The entourage over there.
Where's Turtle?
Match point.
Misses it deep or had the walk off of walk offs there.
That's nice.
Beauty through the middle from Kaitlin Campbell.
The pace generated is a little different from the youngster.
She's on the rise.
You guys had a great pick there.
No, the net aided it,
but that's a take you have to have.
Beautiful linear.
Much better here in the last few minutes.
Posey's.
What a flick too.
Heartbreaking.
Brunch.
Big time pop up there with the backhand out.
I know Annalie Waters usually on the right side,
but also on the left side,
looking to take more backhands out of the air
for speed ups and for soft shots.
Uh-oh.
The groan in the crowd on that.
She's gotten the crowd to exclaim on that amazing return.
Here comes match point two.
That'll do it.
Game effort in game two for sure from Kaitlin Campbell.
It turned into lob a palooza here for the winners.
Clean winners.
Adam Stone twice off the paddles on lobs.
Couldn't even get them tracked down.
Why not have lob a palooza here at the SXY
Newport Beach Open.
Ireland Horvat is standing by with the lob hitting winners.
Take it away.
Mari has arguably one of the best slices in the game,
but you don't seem to shy away
from hitting the ball back normally.
What benefit does that give you?
Yeah, I feel like when you see the slice,
your mental tendency is to be like,
all right, like I can't hit this.
You know, it's going to go too far,
but you actually have to do the opposite.
You have to hit a lot harder than you would imagine
or hit it with a lot more spin.
So I hit a couple of lobs
because I really wanted to accelerate on the ball.
I hit some drives,
but the worst thing you can do is like take time away
and like not hit the ball hard.
It's the worst thing you can do.
So you just got to go for it.
Anna, earlier this week,
you tweeted that your goals were to win
and to get mercury poisoning.
So how much sushi have you had?
I've been having like sushi or poke.
I've been going to Tokyo Central.
I am all about it around here.
I think, you know, the fish in Orange County can't be beat.
So I don't know if I have mercury poisoning yet,
but I'm on my way.
And Annalie and I are doing pretty good too,
as far as, you know, the first goal also.
Annalie, heard you played a little bit of tennis yesterday.
What was that like?
It was a lot of fun.
I just, yeah, I did.
I hit on that court over there.
I just, you know, I had some energy after yesterday
and I really wanted to play tennis.
I love playing like other sports.
If I could just all day play like every sport,
I would definitely do that.
Pickleball is obviously the one I chose,
but I love dabbling in other sports.
So yeah, who knows?
You might see him on the tennis court, basketball court,
anything, I'm there.
Well, not a surprise.
These two in the semis.
Dave, back to you.
Thank you, Ireland.
And we love playing all the sports here.
So what a day so far here.
