Hanoi is the chaotic capital of Vietnam, reputed for its traffic, narrow winding streets, and incredible street food. Best explored over the course of a long weekend, in this travel guide we'll show you how to spend three perfect days in Hanoi, including hidden gems, top attractions, and even a day trip.

On day 1 we'll begin at the Ethnology Museum which focuses on the 54 officially recognised ethnic groups in Vietnam. We'll then head to the expansive Imperial Citadel before sampling a classic Bánh mì for lunch. Afterwards we'll head to the beauiful Tran Quoc Pagoda before heading to the historic Old Quarter where we'll stroll the narrow roads and relax at Hoan Kiem Lake. That evening we'll have a drink at the infamous train street.

The next day we'll head to the Temple of Literature, established in 11th-century and the centre of learning in Vietnam for many centuries. Afterwards we'll sample a local Vietnamese coffee before going shopping in the old district.

Hanoi is a great base from which to explore the surrounding region and so we'll spend our third day in the city taking a day trip to Ninh Binh, which is often referred to as 'Halong Bay on Land' thanks to its sheer beauty. There we'll discover some of the most famous attractions in the area; Hoa Lu, Trang An, & Mua Cave.
