Hey folks, Farmer Joe here coming at you fresh from the field.
So today we're looking at lettuce here that's been planted
and protected with this row cover because one thing that
I want to address is you don't have to wait until May 24th to start planting
your garden. You can actually plant cold hardy greens.
Look it's still spring and we already have stuff growing.
The key is to protect it at night or from freezing temperatures.
And so we got here lettuce. You can also do arugula,
radishes, spinach. These are all very cold tolerant crops.
Main thing is that when they freeze they need to be covered with row cover
because that's going to create a sheltered microclimate
where they're protected from the wind and it does add them a couple
degrees Celsius of protection. And so with row
cover and with early planting you can be
eating greens from your garden in the month of May
instead of waiting for May to plant your garden. I really think of it like
you can actually have three gardens in your garden this year. You can have your
spring garden which is full of spinach and radishes and
green onions and lettuce and all those cold hardy
crops. And then as the warmer weather arrives
you can pull those out and plant your tomatoes and cucumbers and zucchinis
and peppers and all those heat loving crops.
And then in the fall you know at the end of August early September
you can plant more greens around your tomato plants and have another crop of
greens. You can actually get three gardens out
of every garden during the year.
