This is dragon fruit growing at its best and if you can hear it, it is just alive with the buzz of bees. Dragon fruit is also known as patea and it grows on a large climbing cactus that's going to require a strong and sturdy trellis for support. Today we're going to look at an ideal trellis and it's a system that's going to encourage the plant to produce the most fruit. This beautiful plant is growing in a fairly small space so it probably takes up about three meters by four meters something like that and that's the area that you'll need to successfully grow a plant like this in your backyard. The patea has been put into a pot so it's half of a 200 litre drum to create a raised mound so you could do exactly the same in a raised garden bed. The concrete post is driven into the ground so it's really nice and stable. A wooden trellis is secured onto the top. It enables the patea's aerial roots to attach themselves to this trellis really easily. A bit of rio is wrapped around in a loop that has garden hose on it and then the patea can grow through this and then hang back down because once it starts to come back down towards the ground it'll swing out and it'll start to flower prolifically. So while ever the patea is growing upwards it's going to concentrate on growing. The moment it starts to come back down towards the ground it's going to start flowering and fruiting. So this type of trellis is an ideal way to grow pateas. I think they're just beautiful plants to grow for the fact that they attract so many bees. The flowers are beautiful, just wait until it fruits because that is when you're going to be relishing the real magic of having a dragon fruit in your garden.
