After that episode, the comments filled up with great questions and creative uses. In this Hidden in Plain Sight follow-up, we’re answering the best ones and separating fact from fiction.
First up—does tartar sauce contain cream of tartar? Surprisingly, no. The name comes from culinary history, not the ingredient itself.
From there, we put common claims to the test. Can cream of tartar clean electric kettles? Yes—it helps dissolve mineral scale. Remove dark stains from cookware? Also yes, thanks to its mild acidity and gentle abrasive action. Keep canning jars from getting cloudy in a water bath? It can help reduce mineral deposits in hard water - so it does help!
In the kitchen, it shines as a stabilizer—especially in meringues—and helps prevent sugar syrups from crystallizing. It even shows up in homemade Play-Doh, improving texture and elasticity.
Some uses are only partly true. For example, it doesn’t stabilize pudding itself, but it does help stabilize the meringue on top.
And while it contains potassium, it’s not something you’d use as a dietary supplement due to imprecise doses and better sources that are available.
Cream of tartar turns out to be one of those quiet, versatile ingredients hiding in plain sight—doing far more than most people realize.
