On my last morning in Nicaragua, I dove into the sprawling Oriental Market in Managua—135 bustling city blocks of food, crafts, clothes, and everything in between. With my guide Carlos, I kicked things off with quesillos en bolsa, a rich mix of cheese, onions, and cream eaten straight from the bag, followed by tangy chili-salted mango and a steaming cup of street coffee. We sat down for baho—tender steamed beef with yuca, plantains, and cabbage—before winding through endless stalls of clothes, shoes, party supplies, and street grills. It was a vibrant, chaotic, and unforgettable farewell to Nicaragua.
Good morning, everyone. I hope you're all doing well. This is David Hoffman from David's Bin here coming at you from beautiful Managua, Nicaragua.
Today I'm extremely excited because I'm taking you to explore the largest market in Central America, the Oriental Market of Managua.
This place is a monster market, humongous, 135 city blocks. You can explore here for days on end.
They have everything, food, clothing, souvenirs. The slogan of this market is if you can't find it here, you can't find it anywhere on earth.
So it's 8 in the morning. We're going to go look for some breakfast. My man, are you ready?
I'm ready for discover Oriental Market. Come on.
Let's go. And everywhere you look, there's food, there's clothing, there's music.
Whatever you want.
Oh, my God.
¿Qué hay? No puede ser.
¿Quesillos? Hola, buenos días. ¿Cómo estás?
Gracias a Dios.
Gracias a Dios. ¿Tienes quesillo?
Claro.
¿Todo bien?
¿Desayuno ahí?
Buen provecho.
Gracias.
Con salsita. ¿Picante?
Sí.
Bueno, yo quiero un poco de quesillo. Mira el quesillo. Oh, look at this, look at this.
Delicioso eso.
¿Es un doble?
Sí.
¿Como un agarote?
Este es chontaleño.
¿Chontaleño?
Wow.
¿Cuánto vale cada uno?
El más sencillo, 20, 30 más grande, 40 doble, 50 triple.
¿Qué quieres?
Un doble.
¿Un doble? OK, dame dos doubles.
¿Dos dobles?
Sí.
¿Es que las láminas se ven igual?
Este es de chontales, entonces.
Sí, estamos de más chontales.
Que la diferencia.
¿Cuál es la diferencia?
La gente.
La gente seguro.
These quesillos are from a different town called Chontales.
We went to Nagarote, which is like the most famous place for it.
But there's also other famous towns, right?
Look at this cheese, incredible.
Super thin cheese, we're getting doubles.
So it's two tortillas, and then we have cheese, and it's amazing.
En bolsita.
Después lo amarramos.
¿Está delicioso?
So good.
Wow, the cheese, so fresh.
Alright guys, quesillo en bolsa.
So the way you have to do this is get in here, get a huge bite.
¿Está cremoso?
¿Sí?
So creamy.
Amazing.
So you have four different layers here.
Cheese, tortilla, cheese, tortilla.
That's the way.
No, obviously no.
Eat the top layer and close the bag.
So you have to lock it.
Make a little knot right here.
This is amazing.
This is so cool.
Mix everything.
You make a little hole.
Right there.
Good.
Just keep biting into it.
Everything's mixed.
Tortilla literally falls apart.
The cheese is mixed with all the sauce.
A little spicy too.
Quesillo en bolsa.
I'm gonna rank this top three dishes in this country.
Yeah.
For me too.
Alright, nothing like it.
Amiga, increíble.
Así es lo mejor.
En bolsa.
What a breakfast.
The ultimate breakfast.
Mezcla.
He can't talk.
He's mesmerized by the food.
It's too good.
Oh man.
Very good.
The onions, the spice, the cream.
I'm in love with this.
Every time I come to Managua, Nicaragua,
I'm gonna have this.
And if you are in Managua,
come here.
The Oriental Market.
Right at the beginning,
you have here.
Amazing.
Wow.
Tan delicioso.
Can't get enough of it.
The mix, right?
Get all the juices, right?
Bolsa, finito.
Ya, basta.
This is awesome.
I'm just gonna wash my hands right here.
So she has a huge trash can.
Si, dame.
Oh wow.
Si, with soap.
Amazing.
Me lavas las manos.
Cuanto es el?
Cien cordoba.
Cien.
So it's a hundred cordoba.
So I have a...
Cuanto tengo aquí?
Doscientos.
So I have to get changed.
Te pago a ti.
Gracias.
Gracias, amiga.
Delicious.
Seguimos.
Ah, crazy.
So we're going to a place
that they have bao.
Amazing,
steamed beef dish.
Wow.
So donde esta el bao?
Por allá, por allá.
Desayuno.
He's like,
there's underwear and there's bras.
You want some?
I'm like, no.
So right here we have
delicious mango.
Alright, so I'm gonna try
some mango right here.
Alright, so she sells it
with salt and with chili.
She put some salt on it.
So this is not ripe.
It's hard.
But it's damn good.
Crunchy.
And now we got to
the real part of the market,
right?
Yes.
So this is a covered market,
this whole area.
Super high ceilings
and they have everything, right?
So we have school supplies
for kids.
We have stuff for the pool,
right?
Inflatable pools.
They have more kids' clothing,
dresses,
backpacks.
Lots of Marvel,
lots of DC stuff here.
So basically,
you come here,
you can buy everything.
Yeah, everything.
I said it before, right?
You can buy everything.
They say you come here
with a steering wheel
and you come out with a car.
Yes, it's true.
So it's chargeable.
It's nice.
I'm messing with her.
Okay.
So I bought it from him.
150.
I think it's a good deal.
Whatever that is.
5 US dollars for this.
I mean, it's a good little
massage gift for my kids.
They're going to love it.
And he was telling me
he's hungry,
so I think it's worth it,
you know?
He needs to eat.
Wow.
This is huge.
Look how big this place is.
Enorme, enorme.
No para esto.
It's a long hallway.
I mean, just like
20, 50, 1,000 vendors
all over the place
selling clothing.
This is all clothing right here.
So we're starting with the clothing.
People in Managua
are very shy, no?
¿Qué tienes? ¿Café?
Yeah.
¿Café?
¿Quieres un café?
¿Cuánto vale cada café?
6 baras.
So 6 quarts above
for each coffee.
I'm getting us two.
So it's going to be 12.
Pretty good deal.
I mean, that's an awesome deal,
actually.
It's like 20 cents each.
Okay, here we go.
Carlos.
Cheers, mate.
Cheers, salud.
Coffee.
Oriental Market.
That water is boiling.
Okay, so it's 24, no?
Never look back.
Always the present.
Cheers, cheers.
Boom.
Good coffee?
I mean, it's instant coffee,
but it's good.
It's just Nescafé, no?
Either way, it's good.
Let it sit for a second,
but I think it's a great deal.
If you're really, really dead,
tired,
get a coffee for 6.
I mean,
that's a super deal.
Right now the exchange is 36,
so I mean,
whatever it is,
it's like 10 cents,
5 cents, algo así.
Wow.
Last sips.
What they were telling me
is that there's no real trash cans here,
so what you do
is you come here to the side
and leave it right here.
Somebody's going to come by later
and clean up everything,
so as you can see,
this place is spotless.
The only thing I see right now
are some cigarette butts
and that's it.
No, yo estoy bien.
So he has sandals here,
chancletas, right?
So son todos chancletas.
La bomboni.
Bad bunny.
Ah, son lindos.
Oh wow, look at that.
It's illuminating.
Glow in the dark.
43 years herbao right here.
In this way.
I love this dish.
Look at the beef.
Look at that.
The calf.
It's a chest.
Wow.
These ladies are amazing.
They're so nice.
Look at this beautiful
small restaurant, right?
Literally a hole in the wall.
They have the food outside.
You can see it right there.
You come in and it says
bao.
That's the dish.
Bao.
All right, let me start
with this dish.
Oh my gosh,
it's going to be good.
Right here we have
plantains.
Okay.
She wants to give me a massage.
She's too nice.
She's so nice.
I can't with these women, dude.
I mean, it's pure seeds.
But it has the same taste.
Very similar.
Very watery.
All right, let me get back
here to the meat.
Oh my gosh.
This is so good, guys.
I mean, the meat
literally falls apart.
Wow.
Because that vapor, right?
So it's steamed.
And then right here,
more yucca.
Crunchy.
Soft.
That yucca is delicious.
Let me dive in here.
Oh yeah, right here.
Here's the fat
of the chest.
Look at that.
All right, guys.
Time to eat this thing.
It's like pure fat.
It's so good.
Sweet plantain at the very end.
What a dish.
Like I said,
Casillo is one of my top three.
Bao is one of my top three as well.
Bao is the ultimate dish.
We had it in Bao Bilma,
in Masaya.
You have to also get it here
in the market.
It's funny.
I've never heard that term before.
Like, brings you back from the dead.
But like in Spanish.
Seafood soups.
Last bite, guys.
I'm going to share this with my boy here.
Thank you, friend.
All right, so total price is $130.
So it's $100 for the plate.
Got the biggest one.
And then it's an extra $30 for the drink.
Let me finish this.
Cold, cold.
Ready.
Thank you.
Bye, friend.
See you.
Bao everywhere.
Bao's the best.
It's so good.
Amazing.
These guys have every type of watch
you can ever want right here.
I mean, obviously,
imitations,
but they're really nice.
Really nice stuff.
They have Nike,
they have G-Sport.
All right, here we have some more watches.
Sombreros.
To be honest with you,
I've never been to a market this big.
This is nuts.
I mean, I've been to big markets,
but like this?
Crazy.
So we got all the hats.
And I got to say,
this is awesome.
So many different varieties of hats.
You got every major sporting team
in the United States.
Then we have these black ones here.
And I like it because they have black ones.
Plain.
Let's see my plain.
All right, you know what?
Let me try it on.
He said $200,
but he'll give it to me for $180.
I mean, it's a little tight.
I don't know.
It doesn't fit me that good.
This would be nice.
Snapbacks, right?
So you like it?
How do I look?
You look great.
I mean,
Oh, I got Carlos' hat.
So $150, no?
Yeah, of course, of course.
If you don't have change,
what are we doing here?
Now you guys know,
if you want hats,
come here, look at this.
Hat heaven.
Balls, no?
Look at this, crazy.
She's so nice.
So she's the owner here.
This is her spot.
Look at this, we have piñatas.
Can I come in?
Come in, come in.
Thank you, thank you.
Hello, how are you?
This is awesome.
They have crazy piñatas.
The mountain piñatas is insane.
They have every character from Disney.
They have Marvel.
They have Star Wars.
So this is all for like
birthday parties, right?
Birthday party.
Yeah, exactly.
So they have like candies.
They have right here
different balloons
for different numbers, right?
So the age.
Over here they have piñatas.
Love piñatas.
I want to have one
for my birthday this year.
37, I'll get a big piñata.
Yeah, right here we have
the baskets for the kids.
This section is entirely made
for kids' birthday parties.
That is it.
Just piñata vendors everywhere.
Then they have candies,
little toys.
So they have like
right there.
And the people
put all the toys inside
and give to the kids
in the party.
Yeah, it's a gift favor
or a favor.
Yeah, so at the end of the party
you give the gifts
to every kid, right?
Yeah, yeah.
It's awesome.
I mean, we have this huge
influence from you guys.
Obviously, I'm from Miami
so my kids,
this is the same thing.
We have the piñata,
we break it,
everything falls
and at the end
we give everybody a gift.
It's nice, it's nice.
The difference, though,
is the price, right?
In Miami,
it costs you $10,000
one per trip.
No, no, no,
too much, too much.
No, it depends
who you are, right?
To be honest with you guys,
the scary thing
about this market
is you can get
really lost in it.
You have no idea
how to get back.
I mean, it's crazy, no?
Que grande es.
Demasiado grande esto.
Huge market.
Love this place, though.
I mean, really,
anything you need,
come here.
And it's super safe.
I mean, this is like
the safest places
in the cities right here
obviously because
too many people.
So, you're going to be good.
You're going to be safe.
A la izquierda.
The maze continues.
Wow.
Todo, todo.
Now we get out of that section
full of kids' stuff.
Now this is like
all pharmaceuticals,
basically.
And there's spices as well.
Es como una farmástica
casi aquí.
No?
Que vendes, amigo?
Agua.
Coca-Cola.
Agua.
Preciosa.
Cuanto me vale una agua?
Seis.
Seis?
Okay, dame dos.
Six cordobas for this.
Rip a hole.
You know, I'm not about
throwing away plastic.
I actually don't even believe
in using plastic,
but it's how it is
in this country, right?
So, if you have it,
you got to go with
what you got, right?
I think it's actually better
than the bottles in a sense, right?
Because it's a lot easier
to go with it.
Done?
Done.
So, along the market,
you're going to find
lots of vendors like this, right?
They're selling Coca-Cola.
They're selling Fantas.
You got a mix, right?
You have some iced tea in there,
lots of water.
Definitely support them.
If you're thirsty, drink.
Drink water.
Stay hydrated.
Let's keep going.
Shoes, shoes, shoes.
More shoes.
So, each area is distinct
for one or two different
styles of vendors.
This one's all shoes.
We're going to a rapper here.
He says he's clothing,
rap clothing.
Wow.
So, this guy has like
all rap clothing.
He has really nice
high-top sneakers.
And he has another store
over here.
I mean, if you're into
rap clothes, you know,
like hip-hop gear,
this is the spot.
He also has a bunch
of jerseys.
Portland.
Nice.
Oh, this is O'Neal?
This is not Shaquille.
This is Shaquille O'Neal.
Look.
There on TikTok.
We're going to get that
on TikTok.
All right, guys,
let's keep going.
Continue.
Careful with the puddle.
This place is less crowded,
right?
Way less people in this
area.
But we're in the
back streets now.
As I told you before,
135 city blocks.
That's how big this
place is.
Look at this.
Huge.
Some of the shops are
closed, but then it's
like open-closed.
So it's a big mix here.
Too much clothes.
You can never run out
of clothing here.
You know, first-hand
or brand-new clothes,
second-hand clothes.
And, wow,
here, look at this.
Look at these telas.
Super nice.
Look at this.
It looks so good.
It's amazing.
Oh, so fatty.
Juicy, smoky.
Alright, so what I
just tried is fat
from the breast
of the calf.
Exactly.
Right?
Different.
I mean, it almost
felt like esta glándula.
Okay, so it's pretty
amazing.
I mean, this is
basically just a little
grill right here, right?
So she has the fat.
She has meat.
She has plantains.
She has tortilla.
So you can basically
just get that with
some repollo on top
like everybody here is
having.
It's a little tiny hole
in the wall shop.
It's amazing.
Yeah, because it's
Easter week.
So it's a vacation time.
No one's working.
That's why it's so,
so packed today.
And it's right now,
it's 10.20 in the morning.
So get here early.
Have breakfast here.
I mean, it's worth it.
The experience in itself
is just once in a lifetime.
Well, look at this.
Changed up.
I shaved.
Shaved my head.
Shaved my beard.
He did as well.
We just went to a
little barbershop area.
It was amazing.
But, yeah, you can see
that in another video.
Obviously, barbershop
here in the Oriental Market.
Must do.
Come get a haircut.
Mini massage.
I mean, it was nice.
It was really cool.
It was a magic barbershop.
And, yeah, now we're
going to exit through
this huge market.
We're just going to
find our way out of here.
It's too, too big.
I mean, it doesn't end.
That barbershop area
was really nice though.
It was like three
different barbers there.
But one of them,
Osvaldo.
No, Osvaldo.
He's the one that
cut our hair.
Yeah, magic barbershop.
He was so nice.
He was like,
Come in.
Film.
Yes, yes, film.
Come, come.
Feel good.
Feel good though.
This area has a lot
of jerseys.
Mira esto.
Jerseys en todos lados.
Aquí tienes Atlético.
Tienes Barca.
Messi.
And then over here,
Real Madrid.
Yeah, so this place
really doesn't end.
I don't even know
how we're getting
out of here.
Where's the exit?
Oh, we're back at Bao.
Bao, mi amor.
Bao.
Te sigo.
I'll follow you.
I'll hold you
with your hand.
This place is getting wild.
Too many people now.
Now you can't even
walk through the streets.
This is like,
this like,
easily like a million
people here.
It's crazy.
Let's go.
It's a maze.
I mean,
it's just like one,
one long one.
What's up, guys?
One long stretch
to get out of here.
It's funny though
because you keep
hearing music everywhere
just like
La salsa.
And that's the exit
right there.
Straight shot.
Hola.
Wow.
Ciao.
Alright guys,
so that is it.
The Oriental Market
of Managua.
The biggest market
in Central America.
This place is a maze.
135 square blocks.
Crazy large.
They have everything
and if they don't got it here,
it does not exist.
That is the slogan
of the market.
We had breakfast.
We had quesillo.
We had bao.
We didn't really eat
too much after that
because we got so full.
But we explored the market.
We got a haircut in here as well.
Really nice.
Really incredible time.
Well, guys,
I hope you enjoyed the video.
If you did,
thumbs up.
