Chicha is a drink made from Fermented Spit. We are delving deep into Ecuador's Yasuni National Park to witness the Waorani Tribe's agricultural traditions firsthand, with a special focus on this traditional drink. This extraordinary journey promises an unexpected adventure as we immerse ourselves in their culture and history, gaining profound insights into the Waorani people's enduring way of life.
Before I came to the Amazon jungle I had always heard about the incredible traditional chicha
drink but I never could have imagined what's in store for me as we enter the Orani village of
Bameno. I'm going deep into the Ecuadorian Amazon jungle to find out the truth about the Orani tribe
from exotic and extreme jungle food like howler monkey, tapir and yes even the legendary fermented
spit drink called chicha. We are on a deep dive to challenge people's misconceptions and stigmas
about the Orani people and to share the wisdom they have learned over thousands of years.
It was sweltering scorching heat on a bright sunny day
as we got on our canoe to begin the journey of the chicha making process.
Okay so we're walking over to Mayra's house. She's the one with the cassava
and she has a bunch of animals and turtles.
Is it mono? Dude he's eating monkey. Nate, he's eating monkey bro.
Look at the baby river turtle. To be honest the smell of it didn't satisfy me.
You know it smells good. Yeah? It smells like roast pork.
One thing you have to know about this place, you're going to be stepping in a lot of mud
the whole time. Mucha frutas. So it's not seasoned for any of the fruits.
So she cut it and then replanted it. I didn't know you could do it like that. Just hit that.
Lunch. Okay so I have to pull out the cassava.
See? It's for the chicha.
She's digging up for the roots.
So after about half an hour of collecting a bunch of yuca, Mayra put it into the basket
and put it on Ari's head. He carried like five kilos right now all the way down to the river.
We're gonna make a chicha out of this. So we're literally gonna put it in our mouth.
Mix it and spit it into a bucket and they're gonna cook it and let it ferment. Wild. Sugar cane.
It's not as sweet though.
So good.
Ari's gonna break it off.
Do you want me to put it in the freezer first?
Yeah in the freezer first. So just like in India right? We just go
delicious. Sugar cane is the best. Guadalpo. Guadalpo all day. That's what we call it.
She has a stingray here. It's her pet stingray in this tiny little hole.
You guys know I love turtles. Look at this. There's like 25 baby river turtles right here.
Look at this. These are river turtles from the Amazon. So what we have here in the Amazon are
these river turtles plus we have yellow foots and red foots and those are tortoises. So let me
show you these. I think I want to see this right here. Oh this guy's side. See see this is side
neck. You saw these Ari? Saw these turtles? A bunch of babies. So this is all Mayra's property.
She farms in the back. She has a turtle. She has a stingray. Over here she has her house. You can
see all the kids up there. She has four kids. Two sons and two daughters. So right here we have
the boar. So the kitchen, the hammock. This is the way of life here. Yeah and you have the view
right? This is the mirador over there. The view of the Amazon. She cleans all the pots and this is
right here. So clean. That's it. And then as it rains, it collects more water. It's a massive coconut.
Every tree so easily. So freely right?
Oh it's a pink one.
So fresh.
Oh my god. That's so refreshing. So nice. Especially when it's so hot out.
Yo Dev, you gotta get some of this. It's nice and sweet. Super refreshing.
I'm melting right now. This is perfect. It's so hot and sweaty.
Life or death. This is life or death.
Oh look at this. So I just peel it. She just cuts a little bit
and then you just peel it back. Almost like a banana.
This is really an experience. Just sitting here and cutting this open with her.
This is the way of life. And we cut it open. Boil it. Then we're gonna use our saliva to let it
ferment and make chicha. It's a little dirty but. What are we doing? So we're peeling the cassava.
Yucca. So first we, you know, we got it. Then we peel it. She already cut it. So all you have to do is
it's like a banana. Yeah. Very simple. We're peeling it. Yeah. Once we're done peeling,
she'll clean them, rinse them, and then she'll put them to boil. Once that's done,
then we'll put it in our mouths and spit it. Oh, I love putting things in my mouth.
Bro, she's the Thor of Amazon. Thor of Amazon right here.
It's so good. Oh, hot. Super hot. This is very fresh yucca. A lot of times it's very hard.
It's very, very soft. Way too hot.
It's like poo-poo. Look.
She's mashing it.
It's boiling hot. Yeah. This is just like they do in West Africa, bro. In West Africa, in Ghana,
when you do poo-poo, same thing. Poo-poo all day.
Now we're gonna start spitting in there. What? Yeah, bro. We're gonna start spitting in. We're
gonna start spitting in.
That came out like it's a torpedo, bro.
It's too hot.
No, dude. It doesn't go down.
Oh, my God.
You all right over there, man?
Nope. The answer is no. Oh, my gosh.
Are you okay over here?
Wow. Damn. Yeah, you have a lot of spines, bro.
This guy's been like through war, bro. What is it? Spines? Burnt? Mosquitoes?
Don't even look at my toenail. You're gonna have to pour that out.
What we've been witnessing here is...
Every moment is pretty surreal.
In Asia, they have all these like little fish that like kind of nibble your toes.
It's that kind of feeling.
Oh, my God. We're drinking this. We're drinking it.
It's very light.
So, this one...
Wow. Okay. So, the texture thickens in a few hours.
So, now we're gonna try the chicha from yesterday. It was done yesterday. It's
gonna be a lot stronger. Hopefully, it's thicker because this is too watery for me.
Okay. So, they drink the thick chicha when anybody gets a snake bite to stop the venom
from passing through. They drink chicha. It's anti-venom. Wow. Amazing.
They go to the jungle. They believe they have like pick up negative energies,
the spirit, and the chicha cleanses it.
Oh, I got it. I mean, I'm ready for the better one. Let's go for the next one.
It's like a fermented beer but made from yucca.
Very similar.
Hey, they split this, right? I guess we're doing it.
Good. It's good. We're trying chicha of four days.
A lot thicker.
You know what? It's like a sour IPA. It's... Oh, is it? Yeah. It's like a sour beer. It's good.
This is Amazon beer? Yeah, Amazon beer. You got it. Smell that. Smells like beer. Oh, this is mine.
We need more of this tonight. It's good stuff. You want more? No? I'm a little savage right now.
