People always ask me what is the best breed to get that doesn't shed,
is easy to train, and gets along well with children.
My answer is and always will be the Bichon Frise.
This is Gracie and she is one year old.
Originating in Europe, although the exact origins of their breed are unknown,
the Bichon was bred to be a royal lap dog.
But a lap dog they most certainly are not.
These agile, spunky, comical little dogs
have a whole lot of personality and a whole lot of sass.
They are one of my favorite breeds to work on because they are always compliant
and their fur is a lot of fun to work with.
They are very playful dogs that are always happy
and even though they are small, they are pretty hardy.
They are happy to accompany you on long walks or hikes
and they get along great with other pets.
They are very intelligent and eager to please,
making them a relatively easy dog to train.
They can weigh anywhere from 7 to 12 pounds,
but the best thing about this breed is their life expectancy.
I swear my Bichon clients never die.
They live to the ripe old age of 15 to 16, sometimes longer,
and they don't show their age for a very long time.
Their health is fantastic,
one of the reasons being that they are not an overbred dog.
Less breeding means a wider gene pool, which in turn means a healthier dog.
The only downfall to the Bichon Frise
is that their coat color only comes in white.
Many people don't like to get white dogs because they show dirt very easily.
As you can see at the beginning of this video,
and when you wait till the end, you'll see the before and after,
she turns from brown to white.
As a pet groomer, I mostly do easy shave downs all day.
Pet owners generally want something that is low maintenance
and easy to care for at home.
Today, Gracie's owner said I can do whatever I want,
so I'm trying out a haircut that I've never done before.
I'm trying something today called High Set Ears,
which basically makes Gracie look like a balloon animal.
I spray this white cloud down in Spring Metal's cologne,
and Gracie is all finished.
Her groom took me around 3 hours or longer if I remember correctly,
and that's mostly because I was being a perfectionist.
Today, for our pet of the day, we have Roxy the Akita,
with her cat Elvis the Maine Coon Mix, who looks positively mortified.
