Bridges between England and Wales.

21 March 2026 we went to Chepstow in Monmouthshire, Wales, known as 'the gateway to Wales'. We travelled from home in Bristol over the original Severn Bridge on the M48 (M for Motorway). It is one of the most famous bridges in England and Wales. It was built in 1966 and replaced a ferry crossing the River Severn.

Neil actually did some work up the top of this bridge on the lift shaft when he was a lift engineer many years ago, so it's even more amazing for us!

Chepstow is a beatiful historic town and home to an incredible partially-intact Norman castle - Chepstow Castle. The castle is perched on the limestone cliff along River Wye. The construction of the castle was in 1067. I will have more to come on the caste...

In Chepstow is an incredibly beautiful iron bridge -
'Chepstow Bridge is the World's largest iron arch road bridge from the first 50 years (1780-1830) of iron and steel construction. The bridge was first opened on the 24th July 1816, and is an architectural marvel and feat of engineering that has stood the test of time.'

We drove back to Bristol via the M4 over the newer bridge 'The Prince of Wales Bridge' a 5.1km bridge. I absolutely love going over this bridge, it is huge, elegant and makes mefeel like I am going into another world, through some impressive gates.
