In Hawaii, there's a fish so aggressive it doesn't just hunt underwater.
It launches itself out of the water to snatch birds while they're flying.
Like, full-sized birds.
Now, I've seen a lot of crazy things fishing,
but a fish that hunts like this is something I need to see for myself.
So I packed my bags, flew to Hawaii, and I'm only allowed to catch it one way.
On a giant topwater lure.
But over the course of the next 72 hours,
I will be hunting this fish down.
Starting right here at this local beach.
Here in Hawaii, they call the GT the alua.
It's super, it's a super, super prized fish here.
I've never even so much as seen one.
This beach is only the first stop of many because I am hunting this fish down.
Yeah, this here doesn't look half bad.
Oh, whoa, there's fish right here.
What the heck?
What was that?
Okay, that's a really good sign because the fish are up this shallow.
There's probably something hunting them.
I have no idea what kind of fish those were,
but they're a lot smaller than my gigantic popper.
Looks like there's some rocks up here.
This might be where the fish are.
Everything's getting pushed up against this wall.
I actually don't like walking in this area so much.
Whatever it takes.
But what I didn't tell you is,
there's a giant storm about to flood this island.
So from here on, the fishing's gonna get pretty rugged.
Jasmine's protecting my tackle box right now.
It's got all my lures in it.
There is a tremendous amount of rain coming.
Like, tremendous.
We should probably go.
But this storm was about to cause more problems than one.
Like a giant power outage in our hotel,
trees falling in the road,
flash floods all across the streets.
For a little bit now, we had an emergency alert.
Flash floods.
That whole road was underwater
and cars were like little boats going by.
So here is the game plan.
This rain is not supposed to let up for the next hour or two hours.
So we are going to drive across the island to a market
that supposedly has big fishing lures.
That's where I'm going to find the one
I think I'll be able to catch the GT on.
So let's hit the road.
Some really pretty mountains up there.
You can see the waterfalls coming off of them.
Change of plans.
This rain is so bad the market closed.
So Jasmine and I are headed to a local bait shop.
We're going to see if we can find anything cool there.
See you there.
It's supposed to move.
I'm not even going to lock the car to be so honest.
Looks like there's a bunch of lures.
I have just a bigger version of this guy right here.
These look good too.
I think mine is still bigger than that though.
That is a GT.
Yeah that's what that is the fish we want to catch.
Look at how big it is.
Like that thing is actually gigantic.
Do you like this?
Got a little squid.
You like the pink one?
They catch big fish just like that one.
That is a giant wahoo.
Philippine tuna and then a mahi-mahi up there.
We got some mini ones.
Do you want to get one of these?
And like all fishermen I had to leave the bait shop with something.
Alrighty got some taco also known as octopus.
Had a very confusing encounter in there but we got what we needed.
But here's why I got it.
GTs are the apex predators and I've got the taco sitting in the back seat right behind me.
So before I keep throwing out that giant top water lure,
I need to find out what bait they're eating.
Oh wow that is crazy water.
Backseat taco.
Tying on a little jig head right now.
I think it'll be perfect for one of these tentacles.
There's a huge storm about to hit Hawaii but I want to catch a fish.
Oh my gosh wait there's a crab right there.
There's another one right there.
There's got to be some fish hanging off these rocks right here.
I'm gonna take this put some taco also known as octopus on it.
These waves are getting serious and that rain is coming.
Put this on our hook.
All right let's see what's living out here.
Uh-oh oh no no way bro.
The way I got snagged on my first.
But after getting snagged I looked back to Jasmine.
She was giving me a big thumbs down.
I was out on the rocks somebody gave me a little thumbs down.
So she's not feeling too hot.
So we went back to the room for the night,
enjoyed a little dinner and got a lot of rest because tomorrow is a big day.
Good morning.
The sun is shining bright and we are headed to the boat ramp with the charter captain.
His name's Captain Chris and he has caught a lot of big GTs.
So hopefully today's the day we can get one.
Thankfully Jasmine is feeling better this morning and that's a good thing
because supposedly it's gonna be really rough out on the boat.
So we'll see you when we get there.
We're here.
We made it.
Looks like it's starting to rain over there.
So we're gonna throw on our rain gear and jump on this boat.
All right we are all set.
Captain Chris is just over here.
We're gonna go catch some GTs but we're pumped.
Cool.
Cool let's go.
There we go.
We got some big poppers.
This thing has been through it.
Hopefully it'll be through it again today.
Some giant treble hooks.
I think if something hits that it's not gonna get off.
I do like this color too.
It's nice and bright for this dirty brown water.
This is what they call big fish weather.
I'm feeling a GT bite today.
I'm just feeling it.
I know it's gonna happen.
We're off.
We're hitting the water now.
Some big waves today.
Big waves.
Jasmine's a little soaked right now.
Captain Chris is giving me the lowdown right now.
You have a good pop.
Boom!
And when they come up it's going up.
A lot of times they're gonna miss this.
So you just gotta keep popping.
Keep going.
Gotta keep that same rhythm.
Thank you sir.
Here it is.
Here's the big, the big lure.
Let's see if this can get him.
Oh is it a caviar lure?
No way.
I'm gonna send this guy to the moon.
Just giving this thing big roll rips.
I feel like a Guggen right now.
I cannot keep my balance to save my life.
So a lot of times they're gonna miss it.
But if you keep that same rhythm they'll come back for it.
When you really feel like he's on there,
bro you're gonna set the hook real on the slack.
You gotta jack the hook.
You gotta jam a couple hard ones.
Okay.
Just changed up to a lucky lure.
Lucky lure.
So now we've been casting for about two hours
and this is where seasickness struck.
You should sit in the back.
It'll be more calm.
You sure?
You don't look alive.
I look crazy.
You look pale.
Yeah, I'm gonna come sit back over here.
It'll be less bumpy.
Yeah, you go.
I'll sit here.
It's getting wavy out here.
Tell you what, I don't get seasick easily
and this is making me queasy.
Head to a new spot though.
Gosh, I've literally never seen waves like this before.
Literally this entire stretch of land will disappear behind a wave.
Oh my goodness.
I've never fished on something like this before.
Oh man, I just feel so bad for Jasmine
because this is her first ever saltwater charter.
This is really something else.
Trying not to let my breakfast see the light of day.
It's looking a lot more calm back in here
which is exactly what we need.
Water's a little dirtier but I am not gonna complain.
It's like an airport up here.
You probably can't hear a word I'm saying
because it's so windy.
I think this is the spot where we're gonna fish.
You can see there's waves breaking over here.
That's because there's a big coral reef.
This feels like glass compared to the last spot.
Thank you.
What's the game plan here?
Just throw it up towards the reef and then?
Yeah, anywhere.
All out here is all super deep.
Right here is 47 feet.
So we're just gonna try to drift it over out here.
I was getting queasy at that last spot.
This reminds me a lot of musky fishing.
Big old lures and then do the same cast a thousand times
until you find a fish.
At this point it was time to make a decision.
The wind kept getting worse and the waves kept getting stronger.
So it was either keep throwing this giant lure
or try and catch the GT's cousin.
And the ocean was winning this battle
so I just needed to feel something on my line.
Just because I'm throwing this little bobber with a tiny grub
doesn't mean the GT won't find this too.
I'm gonna have to weave through a bunch of little guys
if I want to find anything decent.
It's a baby.
I don't even know.
That's crazy.
What a giant.
All right, send him back.
He's not as small as the last one.
Flip him in.
He took the grub.
We're upgrading here.
A little guy put in something.
It's better than nothing.
It's got really pretty blue.
Oh, thank you.
Yeah, those ones, they call them a omilu.
The bluefin trevally is called an omilu in Hawaii.
All right, I'm gonna send him home.
After going to multiple spots,
I finally hooked something that felt like a real fish.
The more predator fish they are,
the more chances they have to sit there.
Oh yeah!
That was a good bite, dude.
That was a nice bite.
All right, dude.
That was a good one.
It's a blow-up bite, dude.
What is that?
Just a feisty one.
Oh, that thing wanted it, dude.
Biggest one of the day, baby.
Let's go.
Not a GT, but it's its cousin, I guess.
Back to the boat ramp.
We're soaked.
Her jacket is not actually waterproof.
Well, here I am.
Back at the beach where it all started,
I came to Hawaii to watch a GT eat a giant topwater lure.
Two different beaches, one charter with an expert.
Jasmine and I both got seasick.
And the thing is, I ended up catching a bluefin trevally
the size of my hand, a cousin of the GTs,
but it wasn't the giant I was hunting down.
This fish beat me this time,
but I saw the giants on the walls in the bait shop,
and it certainly won't be the last time
I'm back on this island.
I know that fish is out there,
so I'll be coming back.
Thank you so much for watching this video.
It means a lot that you stayed to the end.
By catching a bluefin or an umilu,
I just got one step closer to finding the giant GT that I'm after.
But if you want to watch another video,
YouTube thinks you'll like this one,
so feel free to check it out.
