Shantang Street is one of the most famous historic streets in Suzhou. It was first built during the Tang Dynasty by the renowned poet and governor Bai Juyi, who ordered the construction of the Shantang Canal to connect the city with Tiger Hill.

Unlike the more commercial Shantang Street, Pingjiang Road feels quieter and more refined. Traditional courtyard houses, small bookstores, teahouses, and art studios line the stone-paved lane. It offers visitors a slower, more intimate glimpse into everyday life in ancient Suzhou.
