Guilty Until Proven Innocent
Mar 17, 2026
On March 4, 2026, House Democrats passed a bill that would grant the Attorney General vast powers to demand documents, question citizens under oath, and access private records.
Under Senate Bill 5925, the Attorney General would be empowered to issue Civil Investigative Demands while examining potential violations of certain laws. These demands allow the government to compel testimony and records from individuals, businesses, religious organizations, nonprofit organizations, and even other elected officials based on a “reasonable” belief that a violation of law may have occurred.
Senate Bill 5925 passed without a single Republican vote.
