Senate Action Expected on Save America Act

John Thune (R-S.D.), the Senate majority leader, is preparing to bring the SAVE America Act to the floor, legislation that would require proof of citizenship to register to vote and a photo ID to cast a ballot.

Thune is facing mounting pressure from Republicans to advance the bill. President Donald Trump has said he will not sign other legislation until it passes, and House Republicans have echoed that stance, signaling they will not take up Senate-passed bills until the measure is approved.

60 votes would be required to end the debate and move to a final vote, meaning Democratic support would likely be needed. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) said Democrats are preparing for multiple scenarios, including offering amendments that could force difficult votes for Republicans.
