We are so happy to all be here together tonight. I cannot believe that it's been 15 years. Now,
we are not good with numbers, but we figured out backstage that means we shot this movie in 1883.
And we are so happy to be back here to present the Oscar for best score. Now, a film's score
helps us to feel. It invites us into a world. Oh, sorry. What's happening? Oh, what are these?
Are these notes? Oh, this is weird. This is strange. Okay. Well, mine says,
first of all, you ladies look extremely beautiful tonight. Oh, that's nice. Oh, thank you.
You're all aging well. Signed, Stellan Skarsgård. Oh, this one's from me.
Rose, can you please stop looking at me? The eye contact is too much. I'm thinking
of leaving. I'm very uncomfortable. Sincerely, Leonardo DiCaprio.
I apologize. I have been staring at you. I thought you were somebody else.
It happens. It happens to him a lot. Oh, this is, okay. Let's see. I have to say,
mine is almost impossible to read. The handwriting is really pretty terrible. Says,
hi, I'm with Stellan Skarsgård writing my own separate note. I also agree.
You ladies look radiant. All the things you've done to your faces are very tasteful.
Yours truly, Al Fanning. Okay. Oh, wait, wait. There's more. It says,
just kidding. It's me again, Stellan Skarsgård. Come on. Okay. All right. Mine's kind of short.
You guys have been talking for a long time. This bit could have been a lot shorter.
This is really going on and on. You aren't even talking about score. That's all. Love you lots.
Or for those of you who refuse to learn Spanish, it's Benedict of the Bull.
Well, this last one is quick. It just says, I'm tired and I want to go home.
This show is very long and there's no pizza. Signed, the kid from Hamnet.
He's right. We'll get to it. The nominees for best score are
Frankenstein by Alexandre Desplat, by Jerskin Fendricks,
Max Richter, Sinners by Ludwig Goranson. And the Oscar goes to Sinners.
This is the third Oscar win for Ludwig Goranson,
who previously won in this category for Black Panther and Oppenheim.
Wow. My dad bought his first blues album in Sweden, 1964. It was a John Lee Hooker album.
And even though that it was on the other side of the world from the place my dad never been
and the place he could not relate to, the music was so powerful that it changed my dad's life and
devoted his whole life to music. And when I was about seven years old, a little boy,
he put a guitar in my arms and I loved the guitar and it became everything to me. And it was the
guitar that opened up a lot of doors for me. And it was the guitar that brought me over to the
States. And it was the guitar that eventually led me to one of the greatest storytellers of our time,
Ryan Coogler. Ryan, thank you for your vision and making a movie that resonated with the whole
world. Thank you. We are also here to present the Oscar for Achievement in Sound. You know,
earlier today when I was counting my money, I asked myself, what is sound really? Am I right?
It's a mystery, Maya. I mean, they've asked scientists, they're the best in the world,
including Steven Spielberg. And even he doesn't know. So once again, I find myself disappointed
with you, Steven. You know, I actually think I can help out here. I was just talking about this
with a woman I met on a roller coaster, and she said that without sound, we wouldn't hear anything.
What? Yeah, that's right, Kristen. And it's especially important in film. I tried watching
Marty Supreme with the volume down. No idea what sport he was playing.
Curating these sounds is an art. It's how directors throughout history have created
the classics, their own style. I mean, when we think of Martin Scorsese, we all think of his
two favorites. And the nominees for Achievement in Sound are.
F1, Gareth John, Al Nelson, Gwendolyn Yates-Whittle, Gary A. Rizzo, and Juan Peralta.
There's still a long way to go in this race. Frankenstein, Greg Chapman, Nathan Bogota,
Nelson Ferreri, Christian Cook, and Brad Zorn. After another, Jose Antonio Garcia,
Christopher Scarabosio, and Tony Villaflor. Sinners, Chris Welker, Benjamin A. Burt,
Felipe Pacheco, Brandon Proctor, and Steve Boedeker.
Sirat, Amanda, and Yasmina Paderas. And the Oscar goes to F1.
This is the first Oscar win and for four-time nominee Gwendolyn Yates-Whittle,
and first-time nominee Juan Peralta. The second win and second nomination for Gareth John and
Al Nelson. And the third win and eighth nomination for Gary A. Rizzo.
Um, thank you to the Academy.
Um, I want to thank Joe Kaczynski, you're a genius. Um, Jerry Bruckheimer, Brad Pitt, Plan B,
Lewis Hamilton, Formula One, and everyone at Apple for supporting such a fun cinematic experience.
This award is for the whole production sound team, everyone at Skywalker Sound. Thanks to
and a big shout to our amazing first AD, Tony Hefferman. For our partners, our parents, our
children. Um, I'm sorry. Sorry, sorry, sorry. Our gratitude goes to our partners, our parents,
our children, grandchildren. Movies are made for you. Go see the blockbusters, go see the
independents. Be inspired, go with a friend, get a fresh point of view. Thank you.
