The World Food Programme is the world's largest humanitarian organisation
addressing hunger and promoting food security. In 2015, eradicating hunger was adopted as one of
The WFP is the UN's primary instrument for realising this goal.
The coronavirus pandemic has contributed to a strong upsurge in the number of victims of hunger
in the world. In countries such as Yemen, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Nigeria,
South Sudan and Burkina Faso, the combination of violent conflict and the pandemic has led to a
dramatic rise in the number of people living on the brink of starvation. The Nobel Peace Prize
in awarding the Nobel Peace Prize to WFP is a sign that alongside fighting this health pandemic,
we absolutely have to prevent a hunger pandemic and a hunger catastrophe. And this prize bolsters
that effort. It shows the importance of fighting hunger. It shows the importance of building peace
and how these two things are interconnected.
And number two, I didn't win it. You won it. It's all of us. Thank y'all.
Somebody walked in and said Nobel Peace Prize. I'm like, oh wow, who won it? And they said WFP.
I'm like, you're kidding. I was like, wow, I can't. You just really couldn't believe it.
It really is a tribute to the men and women who put their lives on the line every day
to help people around the world at WFP and our partners. In my 10 years as United Nations
High Commissioner for Refugees, I had the privilege to work hand in hand with my colleagues
from the World Food Programme. And I've seen them in the most remote and dangerous locations
with enormous courage, dedication and competence, serving the most vulnerable of the vulnerable
people of these worlds. Well, to me personally, and to WFP, it's a call to action because I
believe that the Nobel Peace Prize committee recognizes that hunger is a driving cause of
conflict. And literally so many people around the world are on the brink of starvation. It's
a call to action. It's a call to action to our donors around the world, to the billionaires
who are making billions off of COVID. It's a call to action to not let anyone die from starvation.
It's a call to action that we've got to save and help our friends, our brothers, our sisters
around the world, all the wealth in the world today. No one should go to bed hungry, much less
starved to death.
