Finally! NASA Announced Cancel SLS EUS and Mobile Launcher 2! End for Boeing, while SpaceX…
In recent days, the Artemis program has become a major topic of discussion. A shift in NASA’s plans has sent ripples across the space industry, affecting many of the organizations involved.
Most notably, several Boeing-related components have been officially canceled, including the SLS Exploration Upper Stage, known as EUS, and Mobile Launcher 2.
So why did NASA make this decision, and what does it mean for the future of the Artemis program—especially for partners like SpaceX?
Let’s explore in today’s episode of Great SpaceX.
Finally! NASA Announced Cancel SLS EUS and Mobile Launcher 2! End for Boeing, while SpaceX…
It is fair to say the Artemis program is experiencing some of the biggest changes since it first began. The shift reflects the United States’ determination to remain competitive in the new race to the Moon.
These changes have also affected many contractors working with NASA. Recently, NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman confirmed that the SLS Block 1B will no longer be developed. Instead, NASA plans to focus on improving the current version of the Space Launch System. The goal is to shorten the time between launches to around ten months rather than waiting several years between missions.

SLS Block 1B was closely tied to Boeing. Because of that decision, several related systems have also been canceled. NASA announced that hardware connected to the SLS 1B configuration—including the Exploration Upper Stage, or EUS, and the Mobile Launcher 2—will no longer move forward.
In NASA’s update for Artemis IV, the agency explained the decision clearly:
“The agency is no longer planning to use the Exploration Upper Stage or Mobile Launcher 2, as development of both has faced delays.”
In other words, delays and slow progress played a major role in the cancellation.
These systems have been discussed for years, especially because Boeing was heavily involved in their development. In an August 2024 report, the NASA Office of Inspector General strongly criticized the quality of some Boeing hardware, stating that it “does not achieve NASA requirements and industry standards.” The report pointed to weaknesses in quality control, staffing, and overall program management.
