The Humpback Journey: 3,000 Miles Across the Pacific | FD Ocean

Every year, humpback whales undertake one of the longest and most dangerous migrations on Earth.

From the warm waters of Hawaii to the icy wilderness of Alaska’s Inside Passage, a mother whale must guide her newborn calf across 3,000 miles of open ocean. Along the way, they face relentless predators - orcas, tiger sharks and silky sharks - while the exhausted mother survives on dwindling energy reserves.

In Alaska’s nutrient-rich waters, the giants of the Pacific gather to feed in spectacular scenes of cooperative hunting, including the famous bubble-net feeding technique. Scientists follow their journey, recording mysterious whale songs and uncovering the fragile balance of this extraordinary ecosystem.

But climate change and environmental threats cast uncertainty over these vital feeding grounds.

An epic story of survival, motherhood and the last great migrations of the ocean.
