The killer whale is the smartest and most deadly predator in the ocean. She kills seals alone, butchers great white sharks in packs, and can bring down a whale dozens of times larger than herself. But in the entire history of scientific observations in the wild, there has never been a single recorded case of a killer whale killing a human. Zero.
In this video, we examine the killer whale in its entirety: where the nickname "killer whale" comes from and why it's a translation error, how its body and speed biomechanics are structured, what happens inside its brain and why it's more complex than a human's, how its family and matriarchy work, and—most importantly—five real-life killer whale hunting strategies: from risky beachings in Argentina to hunting great white sharks for their livers.
And at the end, the answer to the main question: why does a predator capable of killing us in a second never do so? Subscribe to stay up to date with future marine predator analyses—and let us know in the comments what surprised you most.
