Hello and welcome to a new YouTube video
I'm Natalia your German teacher
Imagine you're feeling unwell
You're sitting in the waiting room finally getting called into the
examination room and the doctor asks you what seems to be the problem
And right at that moment your mind goes completely blank
You know exactly what you'd say in your native language
but in German only two words come
to mind for you—head and stomach
You're not alone in that Many of
my students tell me the same thing
In everyday life I can already express
myself quite well but at the doctor’s
I feel completely blocked Does that sound
familiar to you Today we’re changing that
If you watch this video all the way to the end you'll have
a little cheat sheet in your head with 30 useful phrases
e ones you actually need at the doctor's and can use right away
Whether A1 or C1 you'll find
sentences that fit you perfectly here
and you can use right away
Before we start give me a thumbs up
and subscribe to my channel
That's your thank-you for my diligent work
I'm looking forward to your support and here we go
It's currently winter in Germany
In winter it's cold outside and the air is dry
Many people then develop sore throats
When you're at the doctor's you can say it like this: My throat hurts
Pay attention to the fact that in
this sentence my throat is the subject
An alternative is to say I have a sore throat
My throat hurts or I have a sore throat
That sounds a bit more elevated
If you want to be even more precise you could also say
I have severe throat pain when swallowing
You can naturally adapt the first two variants
for other body parts too—not just my neck
If for example you ate something that didn't agree with you
or you've been under stress all day and now your stomach hurts
Then you can tell the doctor my stomach
hurts Or you can say I have stomach pain
If you have severe stomach pain you say "I have severe stomach pain "
Providing more details will greatly assist the doctor So you
can say I've had severe lower abdominal pain since yesterday
Likewise you can say it if your head hurts
My head hurts
Or I have a headache
Sometimes it helps if you describe the pain more precisely
In English we might say for example I have sharp throbbing dull headaches
This can help the doctor determine exactly what you have
If you're not yet familiar with these adjectives
Definitely write it down and translate it into your native language later
Sharp headaches feel like tiny stabs It's
a brief intense pain that comes on suddenly
Throbbing headaches feel like a pulse in the head
The pain comes in rhythmic waves just like a pulse
Dull headaches are not sharp but heavy and pressing
It feels as though the head is full or under pressure

Maybe you ate a spoiled food
item meaning a food that is
no longer fresh or perhaps you have a stomach infection
When you're at the doctor's you'll say "I don't feel well "
At first this construction might seem a bit odd
but you're surely already familiar with phrases like "I'm cold " "I'm warm "
That's how you describe how you're feeling
A synonym for "schlecht" in this context is "übel "
I feel nauseous
If you feel unwell you might need to vomit
Then you should say "I feel sick and I need to vomit "
Dizziness often occurs when you haven't drunk enough water or when your circulation is weak
You then feel like you're about to fall over
When you're at the doctor's you
should say I feel dizzy This structure
you're already familiar with You can also provide more details
You can say that when I get up I feel dizzy
Or even more elaborately
When I stand up quickly I feel dizzy and unsteady on my feet
If you feel unsteady on your feet you might possibly fall
If that happens—like if you feel dizzy can no
longer stand and collapse—then you'll pass out
Fainting is the term used when you collapse or
lose consciousness Fainting
I have been teaching German for over eleven years and have guided thousands of learners from A1 to C2 level
Many of them have moved to Germany Austria or Switzerland
They worked there raised families and of course experienced the occasional doctor's visit
That's exactly what I'm preparing my students—and you—for
Each lesson was very interesting I think Every lesson was different
and each one brought something new
for me—grammar exercises and more
What I find extremely interesting is that you do your exercises and then receive the correct answer
And then you can say yes okay that was wrong I'll do it again
And by the second or third time you won't make those mistakes anymore
If you're shivering sweating and feeling weak you might have a fever
That means your body temperature is elevated
So talk to the doctor
about it I have a fever
Or you could describe it a bit more precisely
I've had a fever and severe chills for two days
The shivering chill
Shivering indicates that you feel both hot and cold at the same time
and you're shaking intensely Feeling tired from time to time is normal
But if you've been feeling exhausted for a prolonged period you should see a doctor
Then you can tell the doctor I'm very tired I'm completely exhausted
Or you say I feel very tired I feel exhausted
Here we have used the reflexive verb sich fühlen
You've probably experienced that before haven't you
To feel
If you want to be more precise you could say I've been feeling very tired and drained for several days now
Or you say I feel constantly exhausted even though I get enough sleep
Constantly means all the time
If you want to learn even more alternatives to "I'm tired " be sure to check out this video
Here you'll learn many more expressions on this topic
Do you struggle to catch your breath during exercise or when climbing stairs
You should talk to your doctor and tell her I'm having trouble
breathing You can describe it more precisely and add further details
I'm having trouble breathing especially when climbing stairs
Climbing stairs meaning walking upward
If you're unable to manage many things due to your symptoms you should inform your doctor
You'd best off saying something like "The symptoms are significantly affecting my daily life my work and my overall well-being "
Impair is a very nice verb much like influence impair and slightly restrict
This helps the doctor better assess your condition and highlights how important it is that you receive support
Sometimes you've already spoken with a doctor and tried medications
Unfortunately that doesn't always help
You should talk to your doctor again and tell them that I've taken medication but it isn't helping
Or I've taken these medications but they aren't helping
Naturally you'll specify exactly which ones you're taking
Your doctor will then look for another path with you or find one for you
If you're generally not feeling well but don't have any clear symptoms you might want to get your blood tested
You can ask your doctor about getting your blood values checked—I'd like to have a blood test
In Germany we also call that a blood count
You can have either a small or a large blood test done
Usually your doctor will tell you what's needed
You can't possibly know that yourself but that's how you ask
I'd like to have a large or a small blood test done
Tests and medications are essential for improving your health
However there are also things you can change in your daily life to feel better and healthier
And your doctor or physician will also help you with that
Here's how you can bring it up
Is there anything in everyday life that could or should be changed
Together you'll explore ways you can work on your health such as increasing physical activity or adjusting your diet
In some cases it's important for your doctor to know which conditions tend to run in your family
Many of your relatives have diabetes or many have
heart problems Your doctor should also be aware of this
If certain illnesses are common in your family you
would say: In my family there are heart problems
The more precise you are the better it is for the doctor
There's a history of heart problems in my family
My father had a heart attack at the age of fifty
So be as precise as possible
