One key milestone remains: catching Ship.
Instead of splashing down or landing on a pad, the upper stage would return to the launch site and be caught midair by the tower’s mechanical arms — eliminating transport delays, accelerating inspections, and enabling rapid relaunch toward airline-style operations.
So when will it happen?
Elon Musk has shared an updated timeline, and it may come sooner than many expect.
But schedule is only part of the equation. The true challenge is surviving reentry, executing a precise landing burn, and guiding a 50-meter vehicle into the tower’s arms.

After months of anticipation, Ship 39 — the first Version 3 Starship, often referred to as V3 SN1 by Elon Musk — has rolled out for testing.
This is the first major Ship movement in some time, signaling the start of a critical new phase for SpaceX.

And that phase carries an ambitious objective: catching the Ship.
For years, SpaceX has pursued full reusability — recovering both the Super Heavy booster and the upper stage. Catching the upper stage with the launch tower is the missing piece. Success would eliminate ocean recovery, reduce refurbishment, and accelerate turnaround between flights.
But when will it actually happen?
After Ship 39 rolled out, Elon Musk posted on X that Version 3 could achieve full reusability, adding an important condition:
“Should note that SpaceX will only try to catch the Ship with the tower after two perfect soft landings in the ocean.”
That statement echoes earlier remarks. After Flight 3 in April 2024, and again in November 2024 following Flight 6’s successful ocean landing, he repeated the same requirement: two successful soft landings before a catch attempt.

Each time, unexpected issues delayed the plan. Now, with Version 3, the opportunity returns.
Before any catch attempt, several objectives must be met.
Flight 12 is expected to showcase Version 3 upgrades — structural refinements, performance improvements, and reliability enhancements.
Beyond that, SpaceX must demonstrate three core capabilities:
Reaching orbit.
Deploying a real payload.
Returning Ship safely to Starbase.
If confidence is not yet sufficient for a tower catch, Ship could land in the Gulf instead. That still represents progress, because controlled reentry and survivability are the priority.
