Breathing Life into Wood: Carving Traditional Japanese Hina Dolls(Imperial Prince and Princess)
Hello, thank you for watching.
In this video, I demonstrate the meticulous process of carving traditional Japanese Hina dolls, known as "Hina-ningyo," from a single block of sacred Kiso Hinoki (Japanese Cypress).
đ¸ What are Hina Dolls?
Hina dolls are iconic figures displayed during "Hina Matsuri" (the Doll Festival) on March 3rd. This ancient tradition, dating back over 1,000 years, is a celebration to pray for the health, happiness, and bright future of young girls. These dolls are more than art; they are believed to act as spiritual protectors, shielding children from misfortune.
đ The "Kyoto Style" (Kyo-bina)
This set follows the "Kyoto Style" arrangement. Unlike the modern standard in Japan, the male doll (Obina) is placed on the viewer's right. This adheres to "Saho-joi," an ancient Japanese court etiquette where the "Left" (from the doll's perspective) is the seat of honor.
đ A Detail of Nobility: The Crown
Most Hina dolls represent the Emperor and Empress. However, these specific dolls were created to represent an Imperial Prince and Princess. Therefore, the male doll wears a "Suiei-kan" (a crown with a drooping tassel), rather than the "Ryuei" (upright tassel) reserved exclusively for the Emperor.
đ˛ About the Wood
I use Kiso Hinoki, a rare and precious cypress wood sourced from the Kiso region. It is the same wood used to build Japan's most sacred structures, such as the Ise Grand Shrine. Its fine grain allow for delicate expressions, and its refreshing scent is said to purify the air.
Please enjoy the serene sounds of carving and the birth of these noble figures from the wood.
