A film that blows your mind with its groundbreaking visual effects
Known for its realistic CGI and intense action sequences
But did you know how challenging the making of this movie was
How was a large gorilla given the feel of a real character
Were the shooting locations real or was it all pure VFX magic
Yes we're talking about King Kong from 2005
So let's begin an incredible journey
where we'll explore the behind-the-scenes magic of King Kong
The real truth behind the VFX breakdown and shooting locations
The film was released on December 14 2005 with a budget of approximately 200 million dollars
The hard work behind the lifelike motions and action sequences shown here is truly impressive
In one scene Naoumi hangs from the trees and branches in the forest
This scene is portrayed in a very dangerous manner
This entire scene depicting the battle between King Kong and the V-Rex was entirely created using CG animation
However Naumi Watts was shot separately on another set
Crew members wearing blue suits were pushing them to make their movement appear natural
In this scene Nami is shown atop a V-Rex visibly terrified
For this very sequence in the film Naumi was riding a blue-colored prop
Later it was transformed into a dinosaur-like creature in CZI known as the V-Rex
Although all these scenes had been pre-visualized in advance and shot accordingly
The set was designed entirely with solid old rocks and jungle props to make it look immersive and realistic
In a thrilling chase scene the actors flee from a dinosaur
This could also be described as a fairly dangerous and funny scene
I should mention that for this scene the actors were filmed on a treadmill-like platform inside a studio
Here the actors were standing in one place pretending to run
And behind them was a green screen
Later the VFX team added the dinosaur and jungle background
During the filming of this scene a crew member was pushing and pulling the actors using green-colored props
It looks like dinosaurs are colliding with them
As you can see in this scene here
In another intense scene the actors are shown desperately trying to save themselves inside a massive tree
Where King Kong attempts to knock this very tree into a deep ravine
I should also mention that a set was specifically prepared for shooting this scene
On the same set a large tree trunk was placed in the center surrounded by a blue screen
This trunk was physically shaken and moved to facilitate interactions among the actors
This gave actors an authentic experience of real struggle
Here you can see how all the actors represented by dummies are hanging from poles inside the studio performing their roles
And they look pretty funny don't they
But later it was seamlessly blended with VFX featuring the dangerous jungle and its creatures
And King Kong was created using computer graphics
Now watch this scene from the movie where the actors are fighting against strange creepy insects in a deep ravine
These insects were actually created using CGI
A special muddy area was constructed inside a studio to shoot this scene
Some crew members wore green suits there enabling them to mic the movements of insects
And here you can see that the blue-colored props you're seeing were later replaced with CGI insects
For your information a pre-visualization of this scene was created before filming began
In other words their activities had already been designed according to the existing insect sketches and scene requirements
Now comes the biggest question: how does King Kaun's motion and expression feel so incredibly real and who was behind it
Credit for this goes to genius actor Andy Serkis
Andy Serkis is the actor who performed the motion capture for the Gollum in The Lord of the Rings
In this movie they wore a special motion capture suit that digitally recorded their body movements and facial expressions
As you can see here on the screen
In the film Andy Serkis provided King Kong's every movement and facial expression himself
Another interesting detail was that Andy Cirus went to a zoo in New Zealand to observe gorillas
Studied their movements and expressions to make King Kong appear more realistic
Naomi Watts who was portraying Ann Darrow had to deliver emotionally charged and frightened reactions to an invisible gorilla which was extremely challenging
Another intense scene was King Kong climbing the Empire State Building in New York and battling airplanes
Let me tell you this entire scene was shot in a studio with Naomi Watts strapped into a high-tech harness system and only a green screen behind her
The scene of King Kong falling from the Empire State Building was a complete blend of motion capture and CGI
Andy Serkis was wearing a motion capture suit and Naomi Watts was acting while seated in a soft green prop that would later be converted into King Kong's hand
The entire scene of King Kong battling fighter jets atop the Empire State Building was shot using blue screen and mechanical rigs
Jets were mounted on platforms inside the studio that moved dynamically to create the effect of flight
Later the VFX team created a 3D model of New York City's skyline and fighter jets to deliver a realistic and thrilling battle scene
So guys that was the real magic behind the scenes of the King Kong movie
Seeing how much effort advanced technology and dedication go into making a movie is a truly unique experience
