Longquan Porcelain: Reviving Ancient Bronze Rituals
This is the embodiment of how people in the Song dynasty tried to revive ancient rituals. It is also a masterpiece of craftsmanship and artistry. This celadon censer made in the shape of an ancient bronze vessel Li connects with an ancient civilization that emphasizes on rituals and music. It also reflects a porcelain-making tradition that pays tribute to history.
It is a Li-shaped censer, made in the Longquan kiln in the Southern Song dynasty. In terms of the shape, the production, and the glaze, this is an exceptional work of art. It is coated with a thick glaze. The luster appears low-profile. The shape is inspired by Li, a bronze food vessel. The colour, inspired by the green landscape of Jiangnan, reminds people of archaic elegance and spirituality.
"Treasures in Shanghai Museum" is a mini-documentary series that features the treasures and their timeless stories, co-presented by Shanghai Museum and Shanghai Media Group (SMG).
