The Legend of Michelangelo’s First (and Last) Signature

Michelangelo carved his St Peter's Pietà when he was still in his early twenties. It was the young artist's first major commission in Rome, and the first and only time he ever signed a work of sculpture (or painting). Supposedly he added the signature in secret, in the middle of the night, as a way to claim credit for the work after it was wrongfully attributed to another artist. At least, that's the story that gets repeated. The truth is a bit more complicated...
