Medical Aid in Dying a Slippery Slope if Society Decides 'Death is the Solution to Suffering'
New York Gov. Kathy Hochul has signed legislation allowing medical aid in dying, known as MAID, through prescribed oral administration.
The law includes strict eligibility requirements. Patients must be terminally ill with a prognosis of six months or less to live, confirmed independently by two physicians. Patients must also be deemed capable of making medical decisions, observe a five-day waiting period before the prescription can be filled, and be able to self-administer the medication. Religious health care facilities are permitted to opt out of participation.
The measure follows a model first adopted in Oregon and places New York among about a dozen states, along with the District of Columbia, that allow medical aid in dying.
NTD spoke with Amanda Achtman, ethics director for Canadian Physicians for Life, to discuss the law and its implications.
