Madeira is known for its rum, but today we’re checking out two very different kinds of wineries you can visit on the island.

Right in Madeira’s main city of Funchal, you’ll find Blandy’s, a family-owned wine producer founded more than 200 years ago.

Tours are available, where you can learn about the history of Blandy's, see antique wine-making machinery, and check out the hundreds of barrels and vats of maturing wines.
Blandy’s is best known for sweeter dessert wines.
They also have a shop that’s great for gifts and souvenirs.

Less than an hour away from Funchal, in a more rural part of Madeira, you’ll take a one-lane road that winds through the mountains to Quinta do Barbusano.

It’s much newer than Blandy’s, with a tasting room built in 2018, and expanded in 2024 as the winery grew in popularity with tourists.

Bottles of reds, whites, and roses are available, with a few sparkly bubbly options, too.

The tastings and tours can accommodate large groups. Just book ahead of time.
Or, you can opt to drink by the glass. Prices range from 3 to 10 Euros, depending on the bottle.

And you couldn’t ask for a better view, than the terraced vineyards, lush forests, and volcanic peaks surrounding Quinta do Barbusano.

If you enjoy their wine, make sure to buy your bottles here, because they don’t ship off the island!
