The Amazon spanning over nine countries and covering an area of 5.5 million square kilometers is the largest tropical rainforest in the world
It is also one of the most biodiverse places on Earth and home to countless unique species of organisms
Many of these species remain undiscovered
The mysterious forests of South America always hold a strange irresistible allure
In this video we'll discuss some representative animal species found in the forest
The giant otter family that lives in this pond has been awake since dawn
Don't let those adorable faces fool you
These are the ruthless killers of the Amazon rainforest
The giant otter is also known as the river wolf
While hunting prey adult otters continue to keep an eye on their younger family members
This otter family recently welcomed a new member
The young ones will be safely protected in a bankside den along the riverbank
They will stay there for a few months before going out to hunt with the family
At this time the parent otters must be especially vigilant as a cunning leopard cat could be lurking near the group's territory
A raccoon whether young or adult makes a delicious meal for a leopard
The giant river stingray is no easy meal for any predator
An adult otter can weigh over 30 kilograms and possesses remarkable strength combined with astonishing agility
These adorable animals live and hunt in family groups that can number up to ten members
Otters fiercely defend their territory alongside family members against any predator
A powerful crocodile could be in serious trouble if it crosses paths with a family of giant otters
Even a leopard with its usual skill in hiding and ambushing would stand no chance against a group of otters in the water
This family of otters is enjoying a successful hunting trip
Now is the dry season when the river narrows and prey congregates in a smaller hunting area making the otters' hunting efforts exceptionally effective
They are superb swimmers equipped with webbed feet nimble claws and razor-sharp teeth
Their primary food source is fish but if given the chance they will try to catch a young anaconda or a small caiman to improve their meal
Equipped with strong swimming abilities and surprisingly quick reflexes otters can attack their prey from both above and below the water's surface
Their whiskers function like a radar detecting vibrations that help them locate prey while their eyes can see clearly both underwater and on land
Young otters still need more practice
Catching fish was quite a challenge for this novice even in the shallow shrimp- and fish-rich waters of the dry-season river
The giant otter's fur is extremely dense and its skin never gets wet even after hours of underwater activity
Yet it was precisely this unique skin and fur as soft as velvet that doomed the river wolves to a tragic fate
In the 1950s and 1960s they were hunted to the brink of extinction but fortunately a few small populations managed to survive
One of those populations is located in the Amazon rainforest of
Peru Since that dark moment they have been gradually recovering
Otter families spend up to half their time immersed in the water
A family governs a specific territory
This dominant male has come ashore to mark his territory
Massive claws and webbed feet left footprints as large as a human hand
On the riverbank the male leaves his urine to signal to other otters that the territory is occupied
Deep within the forest a troop of squirrel monkeys forages for food
They are a favorite prey of many sky hunters
Of course this includes the strongest forest predator the Harpy Eagle
This killer bird can weigh up to 13 kilograms yet its wingspan measures a mere two meters or so
A golden eagle has just returned to its nest after a successful hunt
Its claws longer than 10 centimeters can easily crush a unlucky squirrel
The couple's lodge is located just outside the Tambopata Conservation Area in Refugio Amazonas
where researchers placed cameras more than 30 meters high in the tree canopy
Scientists have monitored this pair of Harpy eagles for six months
since the first young eagle hatched in the nest
The Harpy Eagle is a monogamous bird that mates for life
They cared for and raised their child together for nearly two years
As it grows the young eagle will become one of the forest's most formidable predators
For over six months the young eagle has endured the most difficult phase of its life
From scorching summer days to violent storms and torrential rains
When the young bird grows a bit bigger it stays alone in the nest while the parents go hunting
The fledgling's waiting time can sometimes last several days
Harpy eagles must hunt beneath the forest canopy because that is where their prey lives
With powerful talons the eagle can crush its victim's bones killing the intruder instantly
This young eagle has nearly reached one year of age and is now ready to begin learning to fly
Therefore from now on free meals will become increasingly scarce
At this stage the eagle has reached the final phase
of its development Its feathers have fully grown in
Soon it will begin to resemble its parents sporting a feathered crown and darker wings
The first flight always carries hidden dangers
If it ever loses control it could plummet from a height of 30 meters and face death
This young eagle has successfully mastered its wings
In the coming days it will fly with skill and confidence
And soon this forest will claim another deadly hunter
Another predator will instill fear into the hearts of those innocent prey
Beneath the forest floor a peculiar creature resembling a haphazardly assembled construct with mismatched parts scattered across its body lurked
It is known by the name giant anteater
This creature is a hunter driven by the philosophy of quantity over quality
Ugly toothless nearly blind
None of the creature's unusual features were evident
He is a terrifying predator
But don't let those things intimidate you
He was truly the most dedicated and powerful hunter in the forest
This digestive machine can consume up to 30 000 insects in a single day
It can grow to a length of nearly 2 meters
Although they have poor eyesight anteaters possess an excellent sense of smell
It moved slowly walking on its finger joints like a gorilla
so as not to wear down his 10-centimeter-long razor-sharp claws
This dangerous claw is used by the anteater to tear open ant nests
This is one of the 200 unlucky nests it will hunt today
The entire body of the anteater is a marvel of evolution
so the animal can adapt to the unusual diet it has chosen
Its long claw could easily probe every nook and cranny
And its tiny mouth could only fit the smallest of prey
It wields an impressive weapon: a 60-centimeter-long blade
When raiding ant nest the anteater swiftly captures worker ants and departs
before the guard ants could react in time to avoid the excruciating stings from the swarm
Its tongue is covered in tiny backward-facing spines and sticky saliva making it perfect for catching ants
Fortunately for the ants the creature eats them
It only sweeps areas it passes through in less than a minute
And by doing so the ant colony gains the chance to continue developing
And the anteater will have a restaurant providing a long-term food source
When it comes to those terrifying spiders
You're probably imagining a creature with many legs and a
spiderweb stretched across the back garden to catch harmful insects
But in this Amazon rainforest there is a spider truly
deserving of the title ambush
predator—the Tarantulano spider
This experienced predator is a constant fear for the forest's smaller creatures
Possessing a colossal body weighing as much as a newborn elephant
This spider is too large to hang from the delicate sheets of a finely woven web
Thus it chose to ambush its prey on the ground
hiding within clumps of trees or rows of bushes
The spider's body blends seamlessly into the brown hues of its surroundings
Despite having eight eyes it is nearly blind
Therefore it must rely on touch to hunt for prey
Its slender sturdy claws are highly sensitive sensory hairs
This component will alert it that prey is nearby
The spider is so sensitive that it cannot be fooled by even the slightest vibration
The tarantula's hunting strategy is also very simple
It released threads from its hiding place and sensed the vibrations traveling along them
Now all it had to do was patiently wait for some creature to wander into the ambush and trigger the alarm system
In the silent stillness of the tropical rainforest the world's largest ant species continues tirelessly hunting for prey
This insect creature can grow up to 3 centimeters long
But what's particularly notable here is its dangerous bite
It is what creates one of the most terrifying heads in the world
It's often likened to a bullet and this ant is likewise known as
the bullet ant Unlike other ant species the bullet ant hunts alone
Its diet consists of sugary foods found in the forest
But occasionally it also needs to supplement its intake with protein
Insects such as caterpillars crickets grasshoppers or even ant from a different species would make a perfect meal
Amid the long-fallen dry leaves a curious creature embarks on a journey that seems short but is profoundly distant for it
This is a giant land snail
Native to South America these soft-bodied creatures can grow up to 30 centimeters long
It has no hands and perhaps its world lacks sound altogether
So how could it possibly find a mate
The answer is very simple Just
follow the trail of another snail
It wasn't exactly easy for a slow-moving creature like a snail
Even though it was the largest snail on the planet the forest remained an incredibly vast obstacle
In addition to being deaf the snail's eyesight is also very poor
Its small eyes on top of its head can retract for protection and extend again once everything returns to normal
Its stronger senses are smell and touch The sensory
organs located beneath its belly help it perceive its path
Once it finds another giant snail its journey will be over
The giant snail is hermaphroditic meaning its body contains both male and female reproductive organs
Every individual is capable of producing eggs and sperm
If fortunate enough to find a mate both individuals will simultaneously fertilize each other's eggs
And not long afterward two new snail fires will rise again in the forest
Above the broad tree a creature just as wide appeared
It was a three-toed sloth
Like monkeys sloths spend their entire lives living in trees
Its closest living relatives in the animal world are anteaters and armadillos
It is among the slowest creatures in the wild
It doesn't need speed because its food source is abundant and always within reach
In a forest tree species rely heavily on fruit-eating animals to disperse their seeds far and wide
But the leaves are another matter
entirely Leaves are the tree's solar panels
In a dense area where trees compete for sunlight leaves are essential for capturing solar energy and synthesizing nutrients
Thus to defend against leaf-eating animals most plants have developed their own protective mechanisms
The most common method involves adding harmful substances to the plant leaves
Even sloths have figured out how to overcome this by targeting only the youngest leaves
Although younger leaves contain fewer toxins they also have a drawback: they are extremely low in nutrients
This made Laziness almost constantly eat and when not eating Laziness would sleep
At this stage its four stomach compartments will have time to neutralize toxins and absorb as many nutrients as possible
The sloth has the slowest digestion of any mammal
However once it eats it inevitably produces waste
Once a week the sloth descends to the base of the tree to defecate
And there's another reason why the inhabitants of the branch
must hang down to the ground—when it's time to find a mate
Beneath the mysterious currents of the Amazon River an 82-million-year-old king reigns in silence
It is the top predator in the river the powerful crocodile
At over four meters long and weighing up to 400 kilograms a young water mouse would be a rather substantial meal
But it's not easy to catch them The mouse
is extremely attentive to its offspring
Crocodiles have inhabited Earth since the time of the dinosaurs and have survived to this day
That was certainly not due to luck
Their extraordinary survival capabilities combined with immense efforts are what made this ancient species successful
Crouching beneath the freezing water the crocodile waits for the perfect moment to strike
Although breathing through lungs a large crocodile can remain underwater for up to an hour after taking a breath
They lower their heart rate to just two or three beats per minute to
reduce oxygen consumption Move quietly and cautiously toward the target
And then its hunt was successful
It was a light meal to replenish energy for the next hunt
For some animals the greatest challenge of the dry season is finding a place with sufficient moisture
One of the smallest amphibians in the forest could be in serious trouble right now this time of year
This is a rare flying frog Its body is less
than 6cm long and weighs only about 30 grams
Yet it is one of the most deadly toxic creatures in the
forest Its diet consists of toxic beetles cicadas and bugs
Scientists believe they may metabolize and isolate toxins from their prey
Then accumulate them and use for self-defense
The single poisonous frog among them contains enough toxin to kill ten adult men at once
Yet this seemingly dangerous creature can also be surprisingly tender
They are among the most devoted parents in the animal kingdom
After the eggs are laid the responsibility of caring for the
tadpoles falls to the male The explosive frog can reproduce year-round
And this frog father chose one of the most challenging times to raise a family
Its offspring are still in the tadpole stage and it must find a suitable area
A place with enough water to sustain the young
It must also be exceptionally cleverly concealed to avoid the gaze of predators
until the tadpoles can develop into their new form
But during the dry season finding such a place is no easy task
The frog must quickly find that place before its offspring wither and die from dehydration
Fortunately for this father frog
It had found a droplet of copper water on a leaf
It takes about six weeks for tadpoles to develop into fully grown frogs
They are truly happy to have a devoted father who will protect them throughout this time
The world's largest tropical rainforest is home to some creatures that have existed for an extremely long time
The Watson bird species has existed for 64 million years
It is a perfect blend of modern birds and dinosaurs
At first glance none of them have much advantage in a survival struggle
With a wildly untamed hairstyle a pale complexion and erratic movements
This fascinating bird is neither aggressive nor manipulative like many other animals of the Amazon
Although they have large wings their flying ability is far
from impressive Instead they prefer walking along tree branches
Despite all evolutionary disadvantages they have persisted to this day without facing any significant threat to their numbers
It's thanks to a unique survival
strategy This bird species is
genuinely foul-smelling Its body emits a very unpleasant odor
Watsons are also affectionately known as whistling ducks
All of this is due to their diet
Unlike other bird species Watson's bird primarily feeds on leaves
They are herbivorous birds and are often likened to cows in the avian world
They are the only bird species with such a peculiar diet
The flexible tough mangrove leaves are so difficult to digest that a single leaf can take up to two days to pass completely through a bird's digestive tract
The foul odor is the very key to this bird's survival
Very few predators want to eat animal whose body constantly emits a repulsive odor
Another strange creature has lived in the Amazon for over three million years
Although they are most closely related to horses and rhinoceroses
But they looked like pigs with longer legs and snouts resembling trunks
This creature is called a tapir
It is the largest land-dwelling mammal in South America
It weighs up to 300 kilograms and must constantly forage to obtain enough plants to sustain itself
Heo vòi consumes up to 40 kilograms of vegetation daily and can live as long as 25 years in the wild
If they manage to avoid becoming prey to the cunning large cats crocodiles or the massive deadly traps set for them
After breakfast it's time for this pig to take a soak
When underwater their specialized snout functions like a breathing tube
As a swift and exceptional swimmer from the forest
He can hold his breath for three minutes and even walk along the riverbed
We've just briefly highlighted some of the fascinating animals found in the Amazon rainforest
