The Aktala Monastery is a medieval Armenian monastery located in the Lori region of Armenia.
It was built in the late 10th century by the Kurikids, a branch of the Bagratunis who
originated from Gurgen. The monastery is known for its unique architectural style,
which blends Armenian and Georgian styles. During the 13th century, the monastery was
reconstructed by Prince Ivanim Kargudzeli, and it became an important educational center in
the historical province of Gagark. The monastery was also used as a fortress to protect the
northwestern regions of Armenia and the road that led from Armenia to Georgia.
The monastery complex consists of several buildings, including a church, a chapel,
and a bell tower. The interior walls of the church are adorned with beautiful frescoes
that depict scenes from the Bible and the history of the region. The complex also includes a library
that houses some of the oldest manuscripts in Armenia.
Today, the Aktala Monastery is a popular tourist destination in Armenia, attracting visitors from
all over the world who come to marvel at its unique architecture and rich history.
