Guthrie Family Plead for Mom's Return; 'Softer Touch' on Immigration | NTD Good Morning (Feb. 5)
NBC anchor Savannah Guthrie is pleading for the safe return of her 84-year-old mother Nancy Guthrie, who disappeared from her Arizona home. In an emotional message, the family said they are ready to talk to whomever is holding her mother. Investigators say they are sure she did not leave on her own and are treating the case as an abduction. President Trump says federal law enforcement is now assisting.
The Trump administration says immigration enforcement is being adjusted, not reduced, citing increased cooperation with local law enforcement in Minnesota. The Department of Homeland Security is also reporting thousands of arrests under Operation Metro Surge. Meanwhile DHS Secretary Kristi Noem visited the southern border, saying the Trump administration has delivered the most secure border in American history.
After ending the partial government shutdown, the clock is ticking for DHS funding. Democrats unveiled a list with demands including no mask wearing, the need for judicial warrants, and for federal agents to wear body cams. DHS secretary Kristi Noem said body cameras are now being deployed. Republicans say they are open to certain changes, but not all, including the wearing of masks. They say this type of exposure could allow criminals to target agents and their families. Senate Majority Leader John Thune says it's possible lawmakers will need another extension for DHS funding, to give more time for negotiations.
