Hi! Planning your trip to Hong Kong?
Or you've been already staying here for work for a while?
Here is a quick and useful introduction to ordering in cha chaan teng,
which is probably one of the first things that comes to your mind speaking of Hong Kong food.
Cha chaan teng, cha chaan teng.
Its literal meaning, tea restaurant, also known as Hong Kong-style cafe.
It serves Hong Kong-style western food at an affordable price.
This is the place where you can see people from all walks of life gather for food.
Well, you may have heard that some people find it intimidating to visit it,
because of the fast-paced atmosphere, the staff there speak so loudly,
seem to be impatient and most likely they don't speak English.
So, let's learn 10 useful Cantonese phrases or sentences for our next visit there.
After taking a seat, I guess the first thing you want to do is to ask whether they have an English
menu. 唔該有冇英文餐牌呀? 唔該有冇英文餐牌呀?
For your information, the last word, ah, is a rather complicated concept in Cantonese.
It is for tone-setting and even changing the meaning of a sentence.
In this scenario, ah makes it a gentle request.
And for that question, the answer is likely no.
That's why I'm going to recommend some well-liked food and
drinks that you can order in every cha chaan tian.
焗豬扒飯 焗豬扒飯

People are so in love with it.
奶茶 奶茶

You can choose either hot or cold, of course.

For the cold one, you can even decide the level of sweetness and the amount of ice added.
For example, if you prefer a slightly sweet and cold drink, you can say
凍奶茶 小甜小冰
小甜 小冰
Cold milk tea with less sweetness and less ice.
西多士 西多士
Hong Kong style French toast. A toast with peanut butter,
served together with butter and drizzled with syrup.
People usually have it for afternoon tea.
紅豆冰 紅豆冰

A classic Hong Kong dessert drink made with red bean and evaporated milk.
It's my favourite during summer.
Once you've made up your mind, you can raise your hands and say
唔該寫嘢 寫嘢
Excuse me, I would like to place an order.
It's literal meaning, write stuff.
Because the staff typically have your orders written down on small paper.
I hope you will enjoy the food and it will make you say

You can add one more 好 to emphasize how good the food is.

If you're with your local friend,
which means you don't need the phrases that I just talked about.
But still, you can impress your friend by saying
你撐我嘅

They both means, it's on me, my treat.
They all sound easy, right?
So if you put what you've learned together,
the conversation would go like this.
