Hello and welcome to a new We've just returned from
our ski vacation and I thought this fits perfectly
Let's talk a bit about winter vacations specifically our experiences in Austria
This is our second time in Austria second time skiing What
do you think of the topic
Vacation is always a nice topic isn't it
Yes
Hello everyone welcome to a new episode of the podcast
My name is Natalia and I'm your German teacher
This is my husband Tobias
We were just on vacation as I mentioned and I’ve
noticed quite a few things I’d really like to talk about
Did you notice anything
Actually yes
On vacation or around people
Or both
No actually on vacation
This time we tried out a new ski resort We were
in the Pitztal at the highest glacier in Tyrol
According to their statement
I of course have a few questions prepared but I wanted to start off generally with that
How did you find the ski resort and how was your vacation
Tell me a bit about it
The vacation was very enjoyable and the ski area was good overall
though it would have been even better with better weather
It was extremely windy with heavy snowfall
making visibility poor in places—sometimes you couldn't see ten meters ahead
Yes it was quite
challenging at times but the vacation was still enjoyable The hotel
we stayed at was nice Did anything go wrong
You mean me
Maybe
I had a minor accident I thought I was driving through deep snow
but unfortunately there was an ice block and then I went off the road
Crashed into a wall and then bounced a
little through the air before plunging into the snow
I only saw Tobias simply fall over the snowbank and crash face-first
I was lying in the snow then I screamed Hanni Tobias and he didn't move
Yes I first had to test it myself to make sure
everything was still connected and that I could move everything
I also had quite severe hip pain because I landed directly on that ice block
I’d been hit in the shoulder so I had to check for myself first to make
sure everything was still working properly on my body and then I moved again
I was just going through a really tough moment in my life
Yeah I believe that
I didn't want anything to happen to you
Neither did I
It wasn’t that bad really
What do you think caused the accident
Also Option 1 you don't have enough experience yet you haven't driven enough Option 2
The route was simply extremely challenging option 3—there was simply poor visibility
Whether you were driving in one way or another even if
the sun had been shining what do you think about that
I don't know if I would have gone through there myself but the route was already very steep
Steep
The slope trail or hill is steep If it
goes down like that
I'd say that was definitely a reason
I just couldn't seem to get my skis to turn right so I thought okay
I pulled over onto the side of the road into the deep snow and I figured that's exactly where the ice block must be
Just bad luck
Did you enjoy the rest of your vacation
Not really that day but were back on the slopes the next day
I really want to get back on the skis as soon as possible
so the fear doesn't take hold in my body before skiing
Then I mean it was already fun before I reached the
point where the pain made it impossible to keep going
Yes I must say I didn't fall down I wasn't in an accident but due to the
That winter was actually one of the least relaxing ski vacations I've ever had
Yes it was quite stressful
Ski vacations are never truly relaxing because you're constantly working spending the whole day on sports
But you're out in nature so if the trail is reasonably
relaxed you can occasionally take a moment to look around you
It's rarely been this exhausting Really I drive exceptionally
well and have years of experience but even for me—
It was so stressful because I had to concentrate so hard
And that one time our ski goggles froze
up From the inside
From the inside exactly We'
ve also discussed that a bit
That was one of the most exhausting descents
of my life—four times now that I've skied
In fact that's also an important word—the departure
And when you go down from the trail you call it a descent
Or for example I had ten departures in one day
Making a departure blindly isn't that cool
And that's exactly what we did
Why couldn't we ride without ski goggles
Because it was too windy and snowing heavily
And even if you're descending there at 20 or 30 km/h slow as it may seem you can still feel it
The snow stung our eyes after all
So we had to put our ski goggles back on
I'll show you a picture of me right here taken while I was driving
I couldn't drive with my glasses on because they were completely frozen over
Then I thought whatever I'll
just take them off now
I put them on the helmet and drove without the glasses And what happened
Do you remember
No
I had my mascara all over it here
Yes I had eyeliner smudged under
my eyes because the snow kept blowing into them
And that wasn't really pleasant either
And I cried even more because of the wind
It was only half-joking
But it was just a departure
After that we sat down at a mountain hut
By the way in ski holidays a café or restaurant in a ski area is called an Alm
Why is it actually called an Alm
Do you know why
Good question An alp is not just in winter but also in summer
Simply put anywhere in
the mountains it's always an alp
So a mountain hut is basically a restaurant in the mountains
No it can just be a simple cabin up in the mountains
Not a restaurant
No
But a hut like your own house
Yes if you have a mountain pasture then certainly in the mountains
Let's just Google it
Or comment
below if anyone knows Challenge
And please share in the comments if you ski too
Some of you wrote to me
on Instagram saying
you also ski in this resort— that was really cool

And we keep moving forward
What was the dialect like in Austria anyway
Did you run into any difficulties
Did you hear anything funny or interesting
And what happened to your microphone
Exactly so you understood everything or was something unclear
So if the Austrians spoke with us I basically understood everything
Especially since some staff members there only spoke English at
the hotel That worked out fine
The hotel was family-run and on a few days the children and grandchildren were also around
And if they'd been talking to each other I'd have had to work really hard
That can sometimes be quite a challenge when it comes to understanding people
They'd probably react the same way if I spoke to them in a little bit of that Hamburg dialect No
Okay Yes and there
it was already
Otherwise I mean fundamentally I didn't have any trouble understanding it now
Yes you also work with Austrians so in an Austrian company
Therefore you already have considerable experience with that Exactly
At first this was also somewhat challenging but now it generally works out quite well
Why is there often more conflict during vacations than in everyday life
Is that really true
I think so
We've argued twice already
We've discussed it twice
Yes exactly
But that had nothing to do with the vacation
It would have happened anyway
You think so
Yes
You fell down and we discussed whether you'd ski again the next day
That wouldn’t have happened if we hadn’t been on vacation
But that has nothing to do with the vacation
Then what
Just the situation
If I were to drive up to the Feldberg right now and the
next day I was wondering whether to go cycling we could discuss that too
I don't think so not because we only had a short vacation
And I really wanted us to experience those days together
That's why I insisted you come along the next day
Here at home I probably wouldn't have done that
I put enough pressure on
myself That's exactly what I told
you That's why I don't need you to do it for me
I also think many people discuss more while on vacation
Honestly I hope it's not usually the case with us
You're hoping so
We don’t usually discuss things much
Exactly
But I can easily imagine people on vacation thinking now that we're on vacation we should relax
And if someone isn't relaxed then they discuss why they aren't relaxed
And then it only makes things worse
When you look at people at the airport for instance you might think they're either heading off on vacation or just returning from one
And just constantly annoyed
or anxious or stressed
Yes but often they just get annoyed and argue with each other really lash out
That's not a nice word
Or stand at the baggage claim where they retrieve their suitcase at the airport
And complain only about why it's taking so long why the suitcase hasn't arrived and what everything looks like
Although they should be deeply relaxed having just returned from vacation
I don't know why that is either
But fundamentally one should always maintain a positive attitude anyway
And try to view things in the most positive light possible
And if the suitcase doesn't arrive well that's just how it is
I don't think it's quite that simple
So feel free to leave a comment if you're watching this video on YouTube right now
Whether you argue more frequently with your partner on vacation than in everyday life
And if so why
And if so why That’s a good question
We're gradually moving on to the next topic
Specifically why
The question is do you ever feel stressed on vacation
How important is it to you who you're on vacation with
I generally don't feel stressed very often
Ah very good But has it always been this way or have you just become so relaxed
I've become so relaxed I used to stress myself out a lot before
I've never really experienced that myself incidentally
Depending on the topic
Maybe a little bit yes
But fundamentally I feel very rarely stressed
And when I feel stressed I notice that I'm stressed and then I stop stressing myself further
I mean fundamentally it's always important who you're on vacation with You
should ideally have fun and be able to laugh with the people you're with
And be able to talk to each other instead of just sitting in silence together
And above all I think it's important that many people believe
also at least what I've experienced even in the
past whenever I've gone on vacation with people
Many think you have to do
everything all at once Or that
you need a clear plan Or if someone doesn’t do something
Sorry to interrupt
But that's something that really gets under my skin
No that would seriously stress me out
If I were traveling with people who have to
plan everything and do everything together
but we're so incredibly relaxed
No plans no stress
We'll take it day by day Let's see how it unfolds
Exactly And I think that's already very important
If people had done that earlier when I became
more relaxed I would have simply said so
If you want to do it I’m not going to so
you do it and we’ll meet up again tonight
That's why you shouldn't stress about things like this now
Of course it helps when everyone agrees on this
e ones you travel on vacation with you don't necessarily need a clear plan for every little detail
I mean for example right now on a
ski vacation I've even
asked her what should we do tomorrow And what's the weather going to be like
And I just kept saying we'd see how it goes in the morning
Then we'll check what the weather is like
And then we'll decide what to do
This year went skiing on vacation with our best man and his wife
And it was really a lot of fun
We were a small group And I think that makes
a difference too The more people there are
the more complicated it becomes
Yes but I think it also depends on who you're
with just as it does in that situation I
wouldn't generalize it like that
How about you Do you prefer traveling on vacation just the two of
you Is it just your family or
perhaps with more people like friends
Or separately with friends
Yes so we usually take summer vacations together
but winter vacations with others
Yes skiing is also fun when you're
on the slopes with several people
Yes I mentioned earlier that I used to ski a lot
Tobias is relatively new
to this a complete newcomer
Newcomers
Have you heard the word
newcomers It's mainly used to describe people who are entering a field or situation from an unexpected or different background
Those who have learned something different from working If I
were to become a teacher all of a sudden now
Exactly So you wouldn't need to complete a full degree
program—bachelor's master's teacher training and so on
You'd probably go through some training and then
become a career changer
teacher Don't know but yeah
You've never taken a winter vacation in the mountains before have you
No
What do you find coolest about winter vacations
We've done this back-to-back now
last year and this year
What's your impression of it
I think it's really cool being outdoors
as I mentioned earlier in nature
at one stays active I'm
not the kind of person who
just lies on the beach
and does nothing That's true
That's precisely why I like
it so much—when you're moving
when you're on the slope when you're learning new things
What do you think I still have a few more questions here
Ski vacation: luxury or overrated
Is a ski vacation really necessary
What kind of vacation do you need
Is the value for money good for a ski vacation
Would you recommend this to anyone
What's your impression Recommending it to everyone is already a very strong statement It also depends on
how one prefers to spend their vacation
You don't have to stay at the
most expensive hotel You could
for example book an Airbnb or a cabin like we did last year
It's usually a bit
cheaper than going to a hotel And
it also depends on
Whether you're heading to a large
ski resort or a
small one if you're going to Kitzbühel you'll likely have to pay a bit more
Traveling to Piztal costs a bit less
Actually I didn't find Piztal to be particularly cheap
No but not nearly as expensive as Kitzbühel
You were also higher up which was more
advantageous That's true that was advantageous too
If you're in the mood for skiing I'd
recommend it to anyone —it's a lot of fun
The view when the sun is out is absolutely beautiful
We can show you that too
The reality of how we experienced the ski area
and how it should actually be
Unfortunately it was only sunny for two hours with us
And during those two hours were up on the alp
because Tobias actually got injured just a short time before that
But you still drove into the sunlight
Yes I had two departures in the sun
You can see that
But if someone for example doesn't like sports
whether they don't like skiing or don't like snow you shouldn't
recommend a ski vacation to them
What do you think of that expression
Need another vacation after the vacation
Then you've done something wrong
But do you know what that's really about
Yes the vacation was
extremely exhausting That's why I now need another vacation
to truly recover
And when someone returns home from vacation like that
He should plan his next vacation differently Of
course it's tiring to work out while on vacation
But on the other hand it's also
how do you say that in German
Exhaust your body to calm the mind
It can also greatly soothe the spirit
when you simply treat yourself to a little relaxation during your
vacation and then sit comfortably on the couch or in bed in the evenings
and still unwind a bit
more something you might not
typically do at home Maybe you would but then again
Who feels more confident on
the slopes Tobias or Natalia
Briefly consider The person who has been skiing
since she was six or the person who has
been skiing since she was 27
Have you gone skiing four times
Hmm I think I'd
be lost without my skis
Very good
Who tends to overestimate themselves more
Same answer
Although when I put on my skis
Alright The accident happened in such a
way that I was shown
what I could improve Then I set off and
drove back and forth on the trail
I tried it myself and thought
oh yes this really works well
Everyone afterwards also said it looked genuinely better
It actually worked
the next day that's not how it happened
But then I thought well I'll just go down the slope like this
And shortly after that I had the accident I might have
gotten a bit too fast Yes you
shouldn't overestimate yourself
But it's also important to sometimes go
beyond your limits fall down and learn from it
and hopefully do better next time
Well I'm not sure you really have to fall down
Yes you do
Otherwise if you just
stay where things work
you won't learn anything either That's true
And if you'd like to learn even more German
be sure to check out our intensive courses
They're challenging and require time
but you'll get better

Happy learning
And I have two final questions
Who has more fear who has more patience
when skiing Do you even feel fear at all
I'd call that respect
I also felt a bit anxious about
descending the slope again for the first time after the
accident I'd say yes to that
But usually I simply respect it because I'm
not very good at it and
I'm fully aware of that
at I'm not very good at it yet and am still learning
Tobias is really good at karting
and I've been saying all along
When I'm in a kart I'm so scared I'll never be
able to drive karts as well as he already skis
But of course you always want to or do you always want to
make everything perfectly well
Yes of course
And then you can't accept it
at I might do something better
Yes I can accept that
You can accept that
But I still want to get
better anyway Yes
And I think that's probably for
the best One last quick
thing Abriski
Fun or horror
Fun if you're drinking
Calm horror
Could you briefly explain what it is for
someone who's never been on a ski vacation
Abriski is available from 4 p m 3 4 2 4 p
Maybe around 2 PM since the slopes close by 4 PM
Well but Abriski is also in the valley
Yeah okay
Also something between 2 and 4 PM
Then you either head up to a mountain pasture
or down into the valley to a bar or club whatever suits
And then there's that typical
Abriski music that makes people dumb That's
pop music
Or is it not really pop music
I'm not sure whether pop music artists would sign
off on calling it pop music
—just a bit flat really
Yes very flat So flat that if you're just
a little drunk you can easily
sing along and have fun
Why do some people find it amazing while others think it's terrible
That's a great answer
With that we conclude this podcast about our vacation in Austria
Also I filmed a vlog during this trip
