Hello and welcome to a new
We just got back from our ski vacation and I thought it would be a good time to chat a bit about winter getaways
Specifically about our experiences in Austria This was our second
time in Austria Second time skiing What do you think of the topic
Vacation is always a pleasant topic isn't it
Hello everyone welcome to a new episode of the podcast My name is Natalia and I'm your German teacher
This is my husband Tobias We were just on vacation as I already mentioned
And I've noticed quite a few things I'd really like to talk about
You noticed things
Actually yes
On vacation or with people Or both
Actually on vacation This time we tried out a new ski resort
We were in the Pitztal at the highest glacier in Tyrol
According to their statement
I've prepared a few questions of course but I'd first like to start more generally—how did you find the ski resort and how was the vacation overall Tell me a bit about it
The vacation was lovely and the ski area was good in general
It would have been even better if the weather had been nicer
It was extremely windy with heavy snowfall in some places visibility
was less than ten meters That made it quite challenging at times
But still the vacation was nice The hotel we stayed at was pleasant
Did something go wrong
You mean with
me Maybe
I had a minor accident I thought I was driving into deep snow but unfortunately there was an ice block
Then I just slammed into a wall and went flying a little bit straight into the snow
I only saw Tobias simply fall over the snowbank and end up lying face-down in the snow
And then I screamed Honey Tobias And he didn’t move
I first had to test it myself to make sure everything was still connected and that I could move everything
I had pretty bad hip pain from slamming straight into that ice block
And in the shoulder That's why I first had to check myself to make sure everything was still working properly in my body
Then I moved again
I was just going through a really stressful moment in my life
Yeah I believe that
I didn’t want anything to happen to you
Neither did I
It wasn't that bad really
What do you think caused the accident
Also option 1: you don't have enough experience yet you haven't driven enough
Option 2: the route was simply extremely challenging
Option 3: it was simply poor visibility Would you
have driven in anyway even if the sun had been shining
Or yes what do you think about
it I don't know if I would
have gone in myself The track was already very steep
Steep The trail the run or the slope is steep
If it goes down like that
I'd say that was definitely a reason
I just couldn't seem to get my
skis turning right Turn
Exactly
Then I just thought okay I'll just drive off the track and into the deep snow
And I figure that's exactly where
the ice block was—just bad luck Did
you enjoy the rest of your vacation Not really Not that day
But were back on the slopes the very next day I really
wanted to get back on my skis as soon as possible
so that fear doesn’t take
hold in my body before
skiing Then I mean until I had too much pain
Being able to keep going was
already fun Yes
I have to say I didn't fall
I didn't have an accident
But due to the weather it was actually one of
the least relaxing ski vacations I've ever
had Yes it was quite stressful
Ski vacations are never truly relaxing because you're constantly
working You're active in sports all
day yet you're surrounded by nature
You can glance around the area now and
then when the trail is fairly relaxed
It's rarely
been this exhausting Really I drive
exceptionally well and have years of experience
But even for me it was so stressful because I had to
concentrate so hard And that one
time our ski goggles froze up
Inside
Inside exactly
We also discussed that a bit
That was one of the most grueling descents of
my life—four times now that I've gone skiing
Actually that's also an important word
The descent
So when you go down from the slope
Then you say that's a descent For example
I had 10
descents in one day
Taking a run without goggles isn't as cool as it sounds And
that's exactly what we did
Why couldn't we ride without ski goggles
It was too windy and snowed too heavily If
you're riding down there at 20 or 30 km/h
Even if it's not blowing that hard you can still feel the
snow in your eyes so we had
to put our ski goggles back on
I'll show you a picture of me right here driving
I couldn't drive with my glasses on
because they were completely frozen over
Then I thought whatever I'll just take them off now
I put them on the helmet and rode without the glasses
And what happened Do you remember
No
I had my mascara all over it here
Yes I had mascara smudged under my eyes
because the snow had blown right into them
And that wasn't really pleasant either
And I cried even more because of the wind
Yeah it was only half-joking
But it was just a descent
After that we sat down at a mountain hut
By the way were on a ski vacation in a ski area
It's called a café a restaurant or an alpine hut
Why is it actually called an alp Do you know
Good question
It's not just a mountain pasture in
winter in summer it's also a
mountain pasture Simply put it's always a mountain pasture in the mountains
An alp is a mountain restaurant
No it can also just be a simple hut in the mountains
Not a restaurant
No
But a hut like your own house
Yes if you have a mountain pasture then certainly in the mountains
Let's just Google it
Or comment below if anyone knows
And please share in the comments
whether you ski too
Some of you wrote to me
on Instagram saying
you also ski in this resort— that was really cool
And above all what's very important I'll transcribe the entire

What was it like with the dialect in Austria
Are you having any trouble
Did you hear anything funny or interesting
And what happened to your microphone
Exactly So you've understood everything right Or
perhaps
something was unclear So when
the Austrians spoke with us
I basically understood everything
Especially because some staff
members there mostly spoke English at the
hotel That worked out fine
The hotel was family-run and
on a few days the children and
grandchildren were also around and
when they chatted among themselves
I had to really push myself then Sometimes
it's quite a challenge
to understand people
They'd probably react the same way
if I spoke to them in a little bit of that Hamburg dialect
No
Alright
Yes and there it was already
But otherwise I mean fundamentally
I didn't have any trouble understanding it now
Yes you also work with Austrians
Specifically within an Austrian company
So you already have considerable experience with
that Exactly
At first this was also somewhat difficult
but now it generally works quite well
Why is there
More conflict than in everyday
life Is that possible
I think so
We've argued twice
We've had two discussions
Yes exactly
But that had nothing to do with the vacation
It would have happened anyway
You think so
Yes
You fell down and we discussed
whether you'd ski again the next day
That wouldn’t have happened if we hadn’t been on vacation
But that has nothing to do with the vacation
Then what Just the situation
If I were to drive up to the Feldberg now that mountain
what's its name again —the Feldberg—there I'd end up falling
and the next day I’ll think about whether to ride my bike—
we could also discuss that
I don’t think so not because we only had a short vacation
And I really wanted us to experience those days together
That's why I insisted you come along the next
day I probably wouldn't
have done that back home
I put enough pressure on
myself I already told you that
That's why I don't need you to do it for me
I also think many people argue more while on vacation
I hope it's not usually like that with us
You hope so
We don’t usually discuss things much Exactly But
I can easily imagine people
thinking while on vacation
Now we're on vacation we need to relax
And if someone isn't relaxed
we'll discuss why they aren't relaxed
Then it will only get worse If you
look at the people at the airport for instance
You'd think they're either
off on vacation or just
getting back and they're just constantly annoyed
Or anxious or stressed
Yes but often just fed up arguing with each other
snapping at one another
That's not a pleasant word
Or stand at the conveyor belt where they retrieve their suitcase
at the airport and complain only about how long it's taking
why the suitcase isn't coming and how all of this
looks Although they should actually be deeply relaxed
They just got back from vacation
I don't know why that is either
But fundamentally you should always maintain a positive attitude and try to see things
in the best possible light And if the suitcase
doesn't arrive well that's just how it is
Ah I don't think it's quite that simple
So feel free to drop a comment below
if you're watching this video on YouTube right now
whether you argue more often
with your partner on vacation
than in everyday life And if so why Yes
if so why—that’s a good question
We're gradually moving on to the next topic
Specifically why
The question is do you ever feel stressed on vacation
How important is it to you who you're on vacation with
I generally don't feel stressed very often
Ah that's great
But was it always like this or have you become this relaxed
I've become this relaxed I
used to stress myself out a lot back then
I've never really experienced that myself incidentally
Depending on the topic
Maybe a little bit yes
But fundamentally I rarely feel stressed
And when I do feel stressed
I notice that I'm stressed
And don't stress me anymore
It's always important who you're
on vacation with
You should have as much fun as possible with those people and be able to laugh together
And be able to talk with each other
Not just sit in silence together
And above all I think it's
important that many people believe
at least what I've experienced even in the
past when I've gone on vacation with people
Many think you have to do everything all at once Or
that you need a clear plan Or if
someone doesn’t do their part
Sorry to interrupt but this is something that really
gets under my skin It would
drive me absolutely crazy
If I were traveling
with people
who have to plan everything
and do it all
together we'd be so relaxed No plans No
stress
We'll take it day by day
Let's see how it
unfolds Exactly
And I already consider that very important
If people had done this earlier
Once I relaxed I also
said if you want to
do it then
do it yourselves—I
don’t want to
And we'll meet again tonight
You don't need to worry about
that now Naturally it helps
when everyone traveling
together shares the same mindset
at you don't always
need a clear plan
not even for every little thing For
example during your ski vacation you
also said what should we do tomorrow
How's the weather
I've just been saying
we'll wait and see in the morning
Then we'll check
what the weather is like
And then we'll decide what to
do This year went skiing on our
honeymoon with our best man and
his wife It was really a lot of fun
We were a small group I think
that makes a difference too
The more people there are the more complicated it becomes
But I think it also
depends on who you're
traveling with—I wouldn't
generalize that right now
How about you Do you like
going on vacation
just the two
of you Is it only your family
or perhaps with more people
With friends Or separately from
friends but still with friends
We go on summer holidays mostly
just the two of us but winter
vacations are
usually with others
—skiing is just more fun that way
When skiing with multiple
people on the slopes
Yes
I mentioned earlier that I used to ski a lot
Tobias is relatively new to this
field
Yes
A career
changer Have you heard that term
That's mainly said
about people who 've
learned something different from
what they end up doing
for work If I suddenly became a teacher now exactly
You wouldn’t need to complete a full
degree program—bachelor’s master’s
teacher training and so on You’d likely
pursue some vocational training instead
and then you'd be a career
changer teacher
I don't know but
yes You never went
on winter holidays up in the mountains
Or perhaps not
No What do
you find coolest about winter
vacations We've
done this back-to-back twice
now last year and this year
What's your impression of it
I think it's really cool being outdoors
which I mentioned earlier in nature
Being active is important
to me I'm not someone who
just lies on the beach
and does nothing That's true
That's why I really like it
so much—when you're moving
when you're on the slopes
when you're
learning new things
What do you think I still have a
few more questions Is a ski vacation
really luxury—or
completely overrated
Do we actually need a ski vacation
What kind of vacation do you
need Is the value for money
good for a ski vacation Would
you recommend this to everyone
What's your impression Recommending
it to everyone is already a very
strong statement It also depends on
how one prefers to take a vacation
You don't have to stay at the
most expensive hotel For example
you could rent an Airbnb or a
cabin just like we did last year
It's usually a bit
cheaper than going to a hotel And
it also depends on
Whether you're heading to a large
ski resort or a
small one if you're going to Kitzbühel you'll likely have to pay a bit more
Traveling to Piztal
costs a bit less but
I actually found Piztal not that cheap
No but not nearly as expensive
as Kitzbühel You were higher
up which made it
cheaper That 's
true it was affordable too
And I mean if you're
in the mood for skiing then of
course I'd recommend it to anyone—it's
a lot of fun
The view when the sun
is out is absolutely
beautiful—we can show you
that too The reality is
ow we experienced the ski resort
and how it should actually be
Unfortunately it was
only sunny for two
hours with us And in those two hours
We were at the alp
because Tobias got injured
just before that But you
kept driving in the sun
Yes I had two sunbathing sessions
Can't get better than that
But if someone for example
doesn't like sports or
skiing or snow
then you don 't
need to force them either
recommending a ski vacation
What do you think of the phrase I need
another vacation after the vacation
You must have done something
wrong But do you know what's
really meant by that Yes The
vacation was extremely exhausting
and that's why I need vacation
time once again to truly
recover And when someone returns home from vacation
en he should plan his next vacation
differently and of course it's tiring when you do sports on
vacation but on
the other hand that's just part of it
What does it say in German
Exhaust your body to calm the mind
It can also greatly soothe the spirit
when you simply push yourself a little
On vacation and then in
the evenings comfortably
lounging on the couch or in
bed able to relax a bit more
One might not do that at home after all
Or maybe one would
Who feels safer on the
slopes Tobias or Natalia
Brief pause for thought
The person who's
been skiing since
age six ever since she turned six
or the person who's skied four
times since she was
twenty-seven Hmm
I think I'd better off without skis
Very good
Who tends to overestimate themselves more
Same answer
Although when I have my skis on
The accident happened in such a
way that I was shown what I could
do better so I set off and kept
going back and forth on the slope
I tried it myself and thought
oh yes this really works
well and everyone afterwards also said it looked truly
It turned out better It actually
worked the next day so that's not
the case But then I thought well I'll just go ahead and drive now
So I went down the slope and shortly after that
I had the accident I might have gone a bit
too fast Yes one shouldn't really
overestimate But it's also important to
sometimes go beyond your
limits fall learn and
opefully do better next time
Well I'm not sure you really
have to fall down Yes you do
otherwise if you're always jus
staying with what works you don't
learn anything new either—that's
true And if you want to learn
even more German then take a look a

enjoy learning and
I have two more
Last questions
Who has more fear who has
more patience while skiing
Are you even afraid at all
I'd call that respect So
after the accident I suppose
I was a little afraid too
The first time I'd go back down
I'd say yes
but usually
I just respect it too much
because I'm not very good at it
I’m fully aware that I’m not
very good at this yet and am
still learning but Tobias is
really good at karting and me—
I've been saying all along
that whenever I'm in a kart
I'm so scared I can never
drive a kart as
well as he can
already ski But of course you
always want to or do you always
want to do everything perfectly
well Of course And then you ca
ot accepting that I might do something better Yes I can accept
that You can accept that too But
I still want to get better anyway
Yes And I think that's probably for the best
One last quick
thing Abriski
Fun or horror
When you drink fun
sober horror
Could you briefly explain what
skiing is for someone who's never
been on a ski vacation Abriski
is essentially a ski holiday
from 4 p m 15
4 2 3 4 p m
Possibly 2 p m because 4 p
The slopes are already closed
But Abriski is in the valley after all
So somewhere between
2 and 4 PM that’s when you’d go then
either up on a mountain pasture
or down in the
valley at a bar or
club whatever it may be and there
you'll find typical Abriski music
It makes people stupid
That's pop music Or is it
not pop music
I don't know if pop music
artists would
sign off on calling
it pop music—it's just a
bit flat really Very much so
flat So flat that if you'
re just a little drunk you
can easily sing along and
have fun in your own way
Why do some people find it amazing
while others think it's terrible
That's a great
answer With that
we conclude this podcast about
