Winter in Nice France Old Town Walk Musée Masséna Coffee by the Sea

January in Nice feels very different from summer. As many of you know that we live in a small medieval village, just 40 minutes from Nice, and in winter we often come here for shopping, and especially now, there are the sales, it's end of it, and we often come to Nice, and the city is calm, quiet, and slower in winter. It's like the city excels after the holidays, and even there's still a decoration on, but it's like relief after the holidays, and you have lots of space to walk, to breathe, and to notice. I love how the buildings look in the soft winter light. The colors feel warmer, and the narrow streets feel cozy rather than busy. This is the side of Nice you don't always see. January is when Nice feels most authentic. It's simple, quiet, and beautiful in very natural way. This is also old town of Nice, and I always say explore a little bit more, because of course you have like two, three main roads, and here is nobody, and it's beautiful, very residential. I know that I'm not making a favor for the owners, because they want to stay quiet, but like explore the old Nice a little more, go out from the main streets, and you will see the quiet, quiet, narrow, sunny, and colorful places. January is when Nice belongs to those who live in Nice. The streets and the cafe less crowded. Everything feels more real. Life feels more local in January. Of course, there are also the tourists. Nice is the full year destination. Here we stop near l'Eglise, near the church Saint-Jacques-le-Majeur. There is also a cathedral, of course, which is in the center of the old town, and I love also this l'Eglise, and I wanted to show you inside. It's beautiful, and we are back to the center of the old town. You see how lively is here. The Musée Masséna, this beautiful building, is one of those places that you might pass without realizing how much it holds. It's located right on the Promenade des Anglais. It's over there, here, you see, so you can come inside from the Promenade des Anglais. I already bought a ticket and they gave me a brochure because soon is the Carnaval de Nice. Right from the Promenade des Anglais, you can go inside into the Musée Masséna and visit this beautiful Belle Époque villa. First of all, with its high ceilings, ornate details and soft light from the tall windows, you can almost imagine the conversations that once filled these rooms. The room dedicated to the portraits, why not? The room where they smoked, with the piano, advertising, beautiful. All the details, the furniture, amazing. It's 10 euro for adult, the entry tickets, and then on the second floor you can learn about the story of Nice, how the city changed over the years and how it became what it is today. This is the key of the city. Here we are in the room dedicated to the Carnaval de Nice. It's actually one of the oldest carnaval in the world. His history goes back more than 700 years. Well, this is the affiche of 1934, 1914. It's modern. This is the modern pictures of the recent carnavals, but the first written mention of the carnaval dates to 1294. Can you imagine? At that time the carnaval was a simple celebration, music, dancing, and over the centuries the carnaval slowly developed and by the 18th and 19th century Nice had become a popular winter destination for European aristocracy. This is end of 19th century, and in 1873 the modern Carnaval de Nice was officially born and we will have it in like two weeks. This is how the Nice was look like before, with the beautiful Casino stand out from the water, destroyed during the Second World War, and also the old image of famous restaurant. It's open even now, and next to it a very famous iconic restaurant, Le Plongeoir, I call it in my guide. And this is the game, Le Pilou, a game from Nice. You can see it on the Promenade des Anglais. It is a traditional game from Nice, deeply rooted in local life and identity. It is less common today, but remains an important part of local memory. Okay, and you can find lots of interesting facts and things in this museum, and it's just next to the Promenade des Anglais, so when you walk and you think how to spend your time, this can be a good idea. The famous blue chairs of Nice. And the number one good idea, what you can do on the Promenade des Anglais, is of course to stay on the beach or drink a coffee at the beach bar. It's always open, you see, even during the winter. Some are closed, but many of them are open all year round. Or just walk along the Promenade and enjoy the beautiful view and the belle époque architecture. So, my French is still not here. She's already in Nice, somewhere in the center, trying to find the parking, because the parking is also the issue. The sun is low and the sound of the waves and the planes replaces the summer noise. There is no rush here. There are several beach clubs along the Promenade des Anglais. And this one is Les Temps d'un Eté, next to the Negresco hotel. I like this place. The guys who work here are very nice. Well, as the sun goes down and it starts to be a little bit cold, next time I need to come here at midday when it's super sunny and stay all day. Wow!
