Qurtuba and the Mezquita–Cathedral of Córdoba: A Story of Two Civilizations
#Qurtuba #Cordoba #Mezquita
Qurtuba, known today as Córdoba, was once one of the most important cities in the world.
In this documentary, we explore the rise of Qurtuba and the history of the Mezquita–Cathedral of Córdoba — a monument that reflects the legacy of two civilizations within the same walls.
From the arrival of Abd al-Rahman I and the founding of the Grand Mosque in 784, to its major expansions under Umayyad rulers, Qurtuba emerged as a center of architecture, learning, and governance. Scholars, physicians, and philosophers such as Al-Zahrawi and Ibn Rushd shaped ideas that traveled far beyond Al-Andalus.
This film also examines the transformation of the mosque after the Fall of Córdoba in 1236, when it became a cathedral, and how Christian monuments were later added to the structure. Today, the Mezquita–Cathedral stands as a unique historical site where Islamic and Christian histories coexist.
Through architecture, history, and preserved monuments, this documentary presents Qurtuba as more than a city — but as a symbol of human achievement, knowledge, and continuity.
We also acknowledge the efforts made in modern times to preserve these monuments, allowing future generations to experience this shared heritage.
