This painting was holding a centuries-old secret that art historians were thrilled to find. A close examination of "Ecce Homo" by Renaissance artist Titian revealed another painting underneath. Researchers in Cyprus say the painting of Jesus Christ was hiding a previous painting that they are still trying to decode. They do know it was very different from the work on top. A close examination of Ecce Homo by Renaissance artist Titian revealed another painting underneath.
It was like uncovering a puzzle. We said okay maybe this is a part of something and then
the artist changed his mind but then once we started realizing that there is a complete
work underneath we became extremely excited, happy and intrigued also.
Researchers in Cyprus say the painting of Jesus Christ was hiding a previous painting
that they're still trying to decode. They do know it was very different from the work on top.
We have not been able to identify who this man is. He's not one of the known patrons,
for example, or friends or clients of Titian. He's standing, he's a professional man.
The setting is an interior setting, an office setting. He's standing in front of a desk.
One hand touches a book or a stack of papers and then the other hand he's holding a quill.
So this is clearly the portrait of a professional man in his workspace.
The rendering of the mysterious painting is on display at the Cyprus Institute until March
so people can view it for themselves. For Inside Edition Digital, I'm Mara Monsalbano.
