You like this?
So low of 1, high of 21.
One of our last travel coffee walks of the year.
Boy, what a year it's been.
It's been interesting.
We're in Solon, Iowa, chasing Porsches.
Hadn't bought any Porsches in a while.
No, we have not.
These are unusual.
This is not what you think they're going to be.
They are not 911s.
They're not 912s.
They're not 928s.
Are they small?
They're small.
OK, that's all I want to know.
So grab your cup of joe and let's go.
You know there's always those family members

It's like a little diesel therapy to start off the day.
Beautiful out here.
Look at this.
Big lake, snow.
Might even have to get my gloves.
Good morning, sir.
Good morning.
How are you?
Not too bad.
You picked a good day.
It is beautiful, actually.
Oh, this is as nice as it's going to get.
Scotty.
Dennis Collins.
Good to meet you.
You too, sir.
Sean.
Good to meet you, Scott.
Sean Popular.
We used to call him Sean P, but now he's Sean Popular.
Sean's new name.
No, I understand the reference.
All right, so we rescue stuff in the middle of nowhere
all the time.
This isn't exactly the middle of nowhere, but it looks
like you've got a good little racetrack here for 914-6.
Oh, gee.
Well, they've got covers on them.
Oh, no, they used to have double wrapped, tied, everything.
I just pulled them out and was trying to get them off.
They have a foot of snow on them, Dennis.
He wanted it all natural.
I think it's great.
Well, I didn't tell anybody on camera what we were after,
but you just did, so that's cool.
Tell us what we're looking at before we unveil them.
Oh, OK.
Well, you're looking at a 914-6, the 994th one.
And it's Loving Adjacent Parts Car, the 1971 914-4.
So you said that's serial number 904?
994.
994th one out of about 3,300-ish.
Yeah.
And they made 115,000 of those.
Oh, I know.
So I think that one's probably worth more than that one.
What do you think?
Most definitely.
Which one do we want to see first?
Well, we've got some shovels.
OK, pigs and shovels dig the gold.
I think we start off with the 914-4.
Let's do it.
OK, well, you guys don't have any shovels, do you?
We do not have any shovels.
That's one thing we don't have in the truck.
We don't have a snowblower, either.
Maybe we need one.
I got the front and back lid, engine lid, and extra top
or under a tarp in that little raise.
So we're going to blow that off.
And then you go all the rest of the small parts,
wiper motors, glass, all sorts of stuff.
Some of it's off of a 73 as well.
But there's just a load of freaking parts there.
So I mean, whether you use them one day or part them.
Use them or sell them.
Usually use them.
And we've got a fairly good size storage facility
for the overflow cars.
So we'll get that up and kicking and running.
All right, well, let's go there.
So 914-4 made about 115,000 of them.
914-6, they made about 3,300 of them.
914-6 does a quarter mile in about eight seconds.
The 914-4 does a quarter mile in about 13 seconds.
So I think Zach might be able to beat
that car in the quarter mile.
Now, we generally chase the 911s and 912s.
I love them.
Well, always in for a 914-6.
But they're so rare, you rarely come up on them.
And the reason they didn't sell very many
is they were extremely expensive.
It's basically the same drive train as a 911T.
Or it is the same drive train as a 911T.
It cost almost as much as a 911T.
Therefore, they didn't sell as many.
Uh-oh, he's missed the drive.
He sure did.
There's Sean P.
Failing.
But it's okay, it's early.
So, I digress.
Fantastic to drive.
It's a mid-engine, six-cylinder Porsche,
as opposed to a rear-engine 911.
It's a totally different driving experience.
As you can imagine, the balance is better.
But they are rare.
And they're actually, it's debatable.
I guess it depends on how good of a driver you are.
They're a little bit more difficult on the track to race.
Unless you had a GT version,
which only made a handful of those.
But we haven't seen them yet.
This one in pictures looked pretty good.
Okay, so this car came from the factory
with a two-liter motor,
which is the same as a 911T of that year.
He just said that the doctor that owned this car before
put a freshly-rebuilt 2.4.
So that ought to be a lot of fun on the track.
Huh, it's only been parked for 12 or 15 years.
Shouldn't be a problem.
No!
Oh no, it's feral.
I mean, you fire that thing up,
and it's like, whoa, whoa!
And then you turn it off, and it just stops.
I mean, instantly, it's tight.
It's got really tight, good compression, huh?
Yeah.
Well, we'll get her going.
I hope.
Oh, yeah.
How's it going, Sean?
So if you want to get Sean to do something,
you have to tell him the complete opposite
of the way you want it done.
You're gonna have to use that driveway.
Yeah, he's going in the ditch.
If he'd gone in the driveway and backed in,
he'd already be in here, right?
Well, I mean, how can we pull these things out?
One of those trucks would yank it up there
without a problem, I would think,
but I'm gonna start digging.
Just powder.
Let's try the blower.
I bet that'll work.
I'm over here messing.
Brooms and shovels.
Hey, there you go.
Oh, he's in.
Outstanding, Sean P.
Sean's a really good driver.
Huh.
I'm not already tired.
I just don't, I'm just gene pondering
which direction to go with this.
I don't know if the snow's really a problem.
You're good, Sean.
You overachieved.
You knew I was gonna do that.
I thought you were gonna go for Sean.
All right, Sean, this is 914.4 here.
That's 914.6.
So we're playing picks and shovels
while we're digging the gold.
Wow, that snow's cold.
Maybe it's frozen.
There's a brick on here.
If we're doing this the wrong way,
let us know we're from Texas.
They're over here laughing at us.
Hey, at least you didn't come yesterday.
It was like 11 below.
I know.
I'm glad we didn't.
It's nice today.
It's beautiful.
11 below.
I don't know.
It was gold.
So we do know this.
If you arrive here late at night, there's no food.
Oh, yeah.
The hoods and the top are under here.
All right, so when you guys are out there hunting 914s,
I know you've heard me say this a million times,
but the easiest thing to do when you walk up to one,
it's a four lug car, it's a 914.4.
Granted, a lot of them have been converted,
so you need to walk up to the serial number.
It starts with a 47.
It's kind of a drag.
It's a 914.4.
What's great about the 914.6
is actually the serial number is 914.
This is a carbon built body,
and the whole car is assembled in carbon.
914.6 is a carbon built body,
but the cars were actually assembled at Porsche.
Big difference.
Where's the engine, Sean?
It's in the back, right?
Or the middle?
You're correct.
It's in the middle.
Is there a spare in there?
Spare's in there.
Couple Weber carburetor manuals.
Now, we're not gonna nitpick this car
because he considered this a parts car, so.
Okay.
I like the wheels.
All right.
You got blocks all around it.
It's gotta be here.
This is why I get to let somebody do all the work for me.
Are you gonna take this money and invest it in silver?
Maybe.
I actually think it's the time to sell silver.
Yeah.
I don't know, man.
What do you guys think out there?
Precious metals are going up.
Yeah, they're going up.
That's crazy.
I don't think I've ever seen silver at $60 a pound.
Is that what it shows you now?
Yeah.
Really?
Let's get $60 today.
Holy.
I think that's going crazy.
I know gold was going like nuts.
I paid the next day.
Gold's at almost $4,500.
Wow.
But if you compare the rise in gold
to the rise in silver,
boy, we're gonna squirrel off somewhere
we don't need to be,
but silver's still cheap.
Yeah.
That back lid is open.
It took me a while to get the latch,
the pull latch is real stiff.
Okay.
So I popped it with a small little screwdriver.
Where's John?
John's not here, is he?
Jonathan stays at his desk.
I got you.
He steers the ship.
Gotcha.
Anyway, so if you close it,
you'll have to get on the latch
with a small screwdriver and talk to it.
Let's not do that.
But we won't close it then.
Then we won't close it.
That was my point.
Until we fix it.
I'm tired of talking to cars.
And actresses, right?
The first thing I wanna do, Zack,
is I'm gonna read the serial number on this car.
Okay.
I'm gonna read it.
You're gonna read it out loud?
Yeah.
Okay, tear off the cover.
Tear off the cover.
And read the serial number.
What are friends for?
That's okay.
Okay.
914, that's what you wanna see.
And again, it is 994, what she said.
You see the five lug wheels on the side.
Not a matching number car.
It's got a 24 in it.
Doesn't hurt my feelings.
No.
Brother's got a story.
I haven't run the history on this car,
but it definitely looks like it's a factory red car
because of the little decals.
Actually, I think it was the yellow turquoise.
Was it?
The yellow.
Yeah.
Okay, well I digress.
Somebody did a very good job of taping off this decal.
Okay, so it's like a mustard yellow color.
Yeah, it's yellow.
So color changed, engine changed.
Still 914-6.
New webs.
Woo!
They're gonna be fun rebuilding those carburetors.
Oh, dude, this thing.
Holy moly.
I, it, it's feral.
That's, it, whoever redid it,
I couldn't get that going either.
Things that make you go, hmm.
It's a cream pump.
That's a project.
Well, it's not rougher than a stucco bathtub, but.
No, it's not.
I don't think we're gonna throw a battery of fuel
in it and get it running.
Not today.
Well, they tell me I'm not a very good negotiator,
so how about I just pay what you're asking for?
That'd be good.
Okay.
That's okay?
Yeah.
Oh, well.
All right, Sean P., what do you think?
He's been sitting here a long time.
Brake's gonna be locked up.
Well, no, I actually pulled it
from where I was sitting out here,
and it got, this side rolls, this side doesn't.
All right, let's see.
Let's make the most complicated plan we possibly can
and cut that in half and then just drag it in the trailer.
Well, we're gonna have to drag them in the trailer,
but I have to pull up, and it's gotta be.
And we have parts.
Check this out.
It's pointing the wrong direction.
Oh, yeah, we got parts on there
at the middle section there.
I think what we should try to do, Sean,
is put them in sideways and see if they'll fit.
We'll just start with that.
Okay.
This is a piece of shovels digging gold.
I don't know what it is, Zach.
We got an extra hood and deck lid.
Some of y'all need that.
Huh.
This is a huge positive.
They both have clean, clear titles.
What?
Yeah.
Did you hear that?
In a 914-6, the prior owner was a prominent doctor.
Supposedly has a big dollar motor in it,
so that'll be fun to fire that up and take it out for a rip,
but it's sitting for a long time.
This is a great day to be alive,
and it is beautiful out here.
Another thing to watch,
if somebody's converted a 914-4 to a 914-6,
a lot of times they miss this.
You see this ignition switch is on the right.
A 914-6 has it on the left, like a 911, in the dash.
So it's a tremendous amount of work to fakey do that.
It's all right, keep going.
Cheap suit.
Come on, break loose, baby.
Negative.
Yeah, that's good.
That's good.
Okay.
I like watching other people work.
Well, thank God it's not frickin' 20 below
and frickin' blowing.
Beautiful, actually.
It is cold, though.
You know it's cold, Sean's got gloves on.
He never puts gloves on.
Well, my fingers are a little frozen, I'll admit that.
Okay, so we'll just go around those trees,
and I'll just-
I think it's-
Let's just drift right around there.
Let's go right into the lake.
Okay.
Let's go.
Cheers.
Was I this time broke loose?
It is.
No, no.
Oh, you get full.
Didn't even spill my coffee.
We're gonna make this as complicated as humanly possible.
But I love it.
There you go.
Come on, baby, break loose.
That's taken up.
That beard's coming up.
I'm trying to get this gear on the top.
What could possibly happen?
Is it in gear?
This door doesn't open over here.
This right rear's locked up.
Front left's locked up.
Right front's locked.
They're all locked.
It's a brick.
All four are locked.
It's a brick.
Whoa, whoa, whoa.
Go ahead.
That's fine.
I got a group question for ya.
Wow.
Well, that was fun.
I don't know if it was real.
That one fought us right there.
Woo.
What is y'all's favorite place to eat that's open?
That is a bar.
Tuesday.
Right.
Don't go back to Solon with that trailer.
You'll never get a parking spot.
Oh, we can.
Whatever your favorite place is, we'll get there.
Well, there's the brewery.
The brewery's probably the best restaurant.
It has good beer, good food, pricey, but it's good.
The brewery it is.
If you guys wanna join us, that's where we're going.
It's on me.
I saw some beer cans in there,
so I'm pretty sure you guys drink beer.
Either that or you just collected beer cans.
Did you see those, Zach?
No.
I gotta show you.
Come check this out.
So that's part of the recycling center,
but you gotta check this out.
So this is their hideout.
Check that view out.
Unbelievable.
Look, we're just finding beer cans.
Now that is impressive.
And yes, this Trans Am is a monster street car.
Look under the hood.
I think this is, what, 600 horsepower?
Something close to that.
516.
So do you guys have stock in Old Milwaukee, or?
No, we're a-
Huh?
No, we're just-
No?
Just lighted?
We're just lighted.
Okay.
Old Milwaukee.
Look at this.
There's the bumper.
Things that make you go, hmm.
This is crispy cauliflower.
This would be a little more spicy for the Korean,
a little more sweeter for the next three or four.
I know we should wait for our silverware,
but I'm starving.
I wanna try that.
Pimento cheese with butter and blue cheese in it.
That might be the best appetizer bite.
Well, none of us listened to the locals,
evidently we should have.
So, what is the daily special?
Chicken and-
Chicken and biscuits.
Biscuits, yeah.
Chicken and biscuits.
Wow, that looks fantastic.
Well, you can definitely have a bite of it.
Cheese.
Oh, thank you.
Soup.
So who's Doug?
Doug is one of the owners, actually.
See, he's part owner of this one.
We also have other locations in Manhattan City,
Cedar Rapids, Des Moines.
And then we just opened up in Omaha.
Yeah, so he's a culinary guy.
He actually came with a big time degree
within the CIA up in California,
Culinary Institute of America.
Okay, the other CIA.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Exactly, right?
Every time people are always like, oh, that?
Yeah, yeah.
So, well-versed within the restaurants of everything.
I mean, awesome good guy, too, as well.
So far, so good.
It's fantastic.
I think maybe we should have ordered
the special of the day, but I just devoured it.
No, we can get some more.
All right, I'm gonna take Zach's camera.
He's gonna try Doug's mac and cheese.
Oh, yeah.
He's really tough at rating.
Yeah?
He is.
Well, you see what I mean?
It looks fantastic.
We like any feedback, you know?
Tell people, it's always hard to get the worst feedback
out of people, because they won't say anything
until after they leave, so.
Well, that's really good.
Solid?
Yeah, the breakfast sausage makes it.
That's, that's a good one.
Y'all might wanna add that.
That's a great move.
You might even just create something.
Let's go.
I'll hook you guys up.
All right, hang on.
I gotta show you what Dennis got.
What is that?
So they, on the lunch menu, you can get half of something.
So, I'm not eating bread, so it doesn't translate very well.
But, pastrami brisket with sauerkraut.
Oh, yeah.
Hang on.
Don't be hatin'.
Kip's big boy ain't got nothin' on this place.
Wow, very, very good.
Nice, awesome, awesome.
I'll get some things rounded up for you guys,
let you enjoy.
Little tomato soup.
Nice quarter pound hamburger patty.
Dip it in a little tomato soup.
Is that what it is?
That's money.
That's gotta be a 10.
No.
No?
I've never seen him give a high, high one.
I don't know why.
8.4.
That's pretty high.
8.4.
That's the highest you've ever given.
No.
I gave out a nine one time.
Nine something.
On Coffee Walk?
Yeah, we'll have to replay that one.
Okay.
I think so.
It's on my Instagram.
Well, this is.
Right here.
Has to be fantastic.
It's great.
And then I have a Richard infused espresso.
Custom made espresso.
Richard beer seems to be popular.
It's good.
We just had it released this weekend.
So you soak those up real nice.
And we have a house made cream cheese mousse.
Awesome.
Happy birthday.
Beautiful.
Thank you.
Thanks for coming in, guys.
Enjoy.
All right, gentlemen.
Here's to a great day to be alive.
There you go.
Great day.
Thank you all for spending so much time with us today
on those Porsches.
And happy birthday, sir.
Thank you.
77 years old.
See, it can't happen.
See, he'd be a good podcaster.
He's, what are you, six, six, four?
Six, five, yeah.
Six, five?
He was in submarines in the Navy.
What?
That is beautiful.
How many times did you bump your head?
This beer tastes fantastic.
He slept on a torpedo.
Well, happy birthday, sir.
What a great day.
Look at that.
Who's going to try that first?
Not me, sir.
I'm out.
It's his birthday.
Oh, it's his birthday.
Let it rip, tater chip.
Tiramisu made at the table.
It doesn't get broke.
Yep.
Is it better than birthday cake?
Ooh, it's really good.
Yeah.
Very good.
Wow.
So don't let the name fool you.
Big Grove Brewery.
It's not a brewery.
It's a fantastic restaurant.
See you next week.
