Joint press statements by Meloni and Merz (simultaneous translation)
So good afternoon to everyone thank you again for being here I'm really happy to have you all here
osted today in Rome the Chancellor Merz and his ministers for this intergovernmental summ
between Italy and Germany the second in just over two years since the one we celebrated
Berlin in November 2023 It is an event that moreover marks the beginning of a particularly significant year
significant for the bilateral relations between our nations especially in 2000
wenty-six marks the seventy-fifth anniversary of the resumption of diplomatic relations
between Rome and Berlin and clearly this summit also takes place at a particularly pivotal historical juncture
a complex situation that forces Europe to decide whether it wishes to be the protagonist of its own destiny
or rather endure it From our perspective it is a phase that demands clarity
responsibility courage and above all the intelligence required to turn crises into
opportunity Personally I am convinced that at this turning point in history Italy and Germany
bear a particular responsibility—clearly due to their history their weight and their leadership
we are two major European nations founding members of the Union key players in the dynamics
ernationals we are the two leading manufacturing powers in Europe with production systems
Industrial sectors that are highly interconnected in many ways are complementary
above all we are both interpreters of a shared vision on some of the most critical issues
strategic and in practice pursue the same fundamental goal which is to build a Europe
authoritative a Europe aware of its role in the world capable of being competitive
the global scenario capable of strengthening its strategic autonomy with pragmatism
with precision with common sense Two years ago in Berlin we signed a pla
of action aimed at raising our bilateral cooperation to a higher level
gher and explore new areas of shared growth—exactly what we have
achieved in these years in these months as demonstrated by the many examples of collaboratio
which we have built I am thinking of the agreement on gas supply security I am thinking of the
joint venture between Leonardo and RheinMental considering the agreement for the integration of Ita Airways
within the Lufthansa group but I could cite many other examples With today's summit we have
decided to continue down this path to keep investing with confidence
our strengthened cooperation is setting even more ambitious goals Today I believe I can confidently say tha
saying that Italy and Germany are closer than ever and I think this represents
good news not only for our peoples but also for Europe as a whole because
wo important friendly allied nations strong both economically and
as industrialized nations like Italy and Germany move in the same direction eac
our unique value then creates the conditions for achieving excellent and significant results
results for our businesses our workers and our citizens alike
complex Today we have decided to strengthen this cooperation by which we mean cooperation betwee
e most accurate meaning of the term as I've already mentioned often lies in its etymology
Parole restore to us the deepest image and meaning of what we say cooperatio
comes from the Latin cooperare meaning to work together In cooperation there is never a subjec
active and passive parties buyer and seller for example in genuine cooperatio
ere's always something new emerging where each person brings their unique value
That is precisely what we are doing what we are accomplishing today on this significant day
adopting three highly significant documents in addition to the agreements you have seen are now
first signed and exchanged The first is a cooperation agreement that updates
e bilateral action plan signed in 2023 expands our areas of cooperation
I think about agriculture I think about the further strengthening we intend to impart to the
our already solid industrial cooperation I think of cultural dialogue I think of collaboratio
managing migration flows one of the critical challenges facing our continent is the need to balance security humanitarian responsibility and sustainable integration
There is full alignment with the German chancellor including on migration both of them
we believe the main challenge lies in securing the Union's external borders
the fight against human trafficking committed to ensuring respect for the rule of law
strengthening the return system as well as in cooperation with nations
routes of origin and transit that Italy in particular but not exclusively Italy is striving to develop
rough a new model of cooperation with the African continent Our goal is
It is clearly essential to consolidate this shift in approach thanks in part to our governments
has gained strength and continues to grow increasingly in Europe enabling this
years of ensuring a significant reduction in irregular entries from departures
commitment to address illegal landings Italy intends to continue pursuing solutions
ovative starting from the protocol with Albania which we have actively promoted I wa
ell Chancellor Merz that I am grateful for his decision to participate consistently
e informal working group that meets among countries sharing the same visio
on the sidelines of the European Council meetings specifically on the issue of migration The other major topic is very
An important point on which we agree with Chancellor Merz is that a decisive step is necessary
a shift in Europe regarding the competitiveness of our businesses as it is now a fac
is clear and evident to anyone who is intellectually honest that a certain ideological perspective o
e green transition ultimately ended up crippling our industries in order to deliver
Europe faces new strategic dependencies without truly making a tangible impact
the global protection of the environment and nature We are convinced that there is room for improvement
o correct these errors and prevent the industrial decline of our contine
of course requires courage We want to accelerate progress on these issues and the reason is
for which we will present ourselves at the next informal summit on February 12 in Brussels
e discussion for the upcoming crucial March summit particularly on
competitiveness begins here with our joint non-paper focused on this topic
among our non-negotiable priorities simplifying and reducing bureaucracy
Europe the strengthening of the single market the revitalization of the automotive industry
the spirit of technological neutrality an ambitious trade policy based on rules
equal treatment and fair conditions It is the second document signed today and is a docume
work that I consider highly meaningful which we intend to share with the Commissio
Europe with the President of the European Council as well as with all the other leaders who will attend
and these discussions Equally significant is the third document we have signed
s morning on the topics of defense security and resilience—areas in which Italy and
Germany can rely on industrial entities of absolute excellence that generate an extremely hig
added value We aim to strengthen our cooperation in this area as we consider it essential
at our production systems can make a significant contribution to the constructio
at solid pillar of the Atlantic alliance we have long called for
without ever truly taking meaningful action or following through To this end I have
Italy also informed Chancellor Merz of its decision to join the multilateral agreement
e existing agreement among Germany France Spain and the United Kingdom regarding arms exports
That's precisely why we had an important 2 plus 2 meeting this morning between our sides
foreign ministers and ministers of defense to coordinate positions and work together
and even closer cooperation on major international issues starting with Ukraine
and from the Middle East Here too our connection has always been strong on both sides
On the front lines we will continue doing our part to achieve a just and lasting peace
Ukraine to establish a stable framework for security and prosperity in the Middle East
We also discussed this morning how to enhance our cooperation on many fronts
other fronts such as energy interconnections and the issue of interconnections itself
economic and infrastructural factors that are increasingly decisive for this era we are working
ogether to support the strategic initiatives aligned with this goal I believe
e South-East-2 Corridor Medlink ELMED IMEC then the corridor connecting
India the Middle East and Europe where Italy and Germany play leading roles in
Europe As you can see the work we've done and still have to do is extensive yet in the
Today's events not only confirm the partnership between Italy and Germany but also decide
strengthen it at every level by working side by side on challenges that are crucial to the future
our time In these hours I've read some comments a few
The observer said that 2026 will be Italy's and Germany's year but I don't know whether that's true
e forecast matches reality and what I can say is that we intend to give it our all
We absolutely intend to do our part to strengthen a friendship that is strategic
ot only for our nations but also vital for all of Europe thank you again Chancellor
And the word is yours Here's the Council dear Giorgia first of all
On behalf of my colleagues the Ministers and Ministers thank you for the warm welcome
And for this warm meeting we've had today here in Rome these government consultations that
were so thoroughly prepared over the past weeks and that we have now successfully carried ou
Today we will conclude with a business meeting We have observed
that Germany and Italy are very close closer than they have ever been
we are celebrating this milestone of 75 years of diplomatic relations which is the anniversary we mark today
2026 which shows that we truly have a very important task ahead one that
has involved a long period of close collaboration because together we have
In addition to the other four countries we are founding members of the European community and the treaties were
firmly established in Rome the foundations for a closer and even more partnership-oriented cooperatio
Between Germany and Italy we want 2026 to be a year of opportunity
It's a year of decisions and indeed there are the necessary foundations between Germany and Italy
a natural alignment in assessing the challenges before us in our countries and in the
Our democracies as well as the European Union as a whole share strong alignment in values
and in the interests This morning we returned from Brussels having attended a summit
extraordinary European and in this context we have presented our positions
With strong convergence we have two important tasks ahead of us and we are determined to achieve them
e competitiveness of industries we've realized we must together do more for
Our security I would like to recall our first meeting here in Rome after the appointment
Since taking up my assignment I have come to Rome and engaged in an intense exchange during which we have observed
exactly because in so many files we have strong convergence so we are working toward
an Europe that must now focus on essential matters we must continue to
working for peace in Ukraine and I want to say this personally in these past few days
during the winter war we are increasing our support for Kyiv and Ukraine especially
as far as energy supply is concerned but we also support the negotiations
Peace and with Zelensky we are in constant exchange We want a united Europe
a beloved figure in a new era of great powers this week we have fel
almost every day on how to handle the difficult issue of Greenland and Denmar
and together with Emmanuel Macron who is the Stammer and Donald Tusk and the other European neighbors we have
jointly stating that Europe must do more to ensure Arctic security in commo
ransatlantic interest Germany will strengthen its commitment and Italy has just adopted
many of you will know Italy has adopted a new Arctic strategy which we
We can essentially agree as Denmark and the people of Greenland ca
Count on solidarity on our solidarity based on sovereignty and integrity
erritorial we aim to support discussions among Denmark Greenland and the States
Unite yourselves and this will be possible only through mutual agreement During
The European Council therefore decided yesterday that it is important to respond firmly
and we have a very clear compass in a new era of great powers Europe mus
strong and resolute we aim to safeguard NATO—we in Europe know full well how vital it is
precious is the trust upon which NATO is based we know this trust is the advantage
a decisive competitive edge not only for the United States but for America globally yet today
we have not only dealt with emergency diplomacy but have literally set the foundation for a new era
The agenda for this year's opportunities we've just signed an action pla
a sophisticated Italian-German initiative developed by the two governments in recent weeks to enhance competitiveness
for a new bilateral dynamic in the defense industry and a migration policy
Being committed we always view this group through a European lens the European economy
must regain new momentum and we want to activate it together from the beginning of the years
The gap in growth between the European Union and the United States is steadily widening
and to China this also undermines our ability to act and our
European solidarity which is why Italy and Germany want to give a new impetus
Europe we have decided together on this and this is the goal especially whe
We will meet on February 12 in Belgium we want to dismantle bureaucracy across Europe to become
more competitive Giorgia you just said it—this is truly our top priority we wa
a trade policy of the European Union that leverages the agreement between the European Union
Mercosur has been a significant breakthrough and the European Council has already decided it mus
ake effect additional agreements will follow starting with India there will also be
as well as missions to India by the Commission and the Council we want to have agreements
with Australia and with Asian countries regarding trade agreements
and it is very important it was the security and defense policy we signed
an agreement that strengthens our cooperation in the defense sector and aligns our efforts
military procurement we want to coordinate more closely on security policy and
In defense our defense ministers and defense personnel have met
a new format we also want to strengthen cooperation in the realm of internal security
Coordination in European migration policy is particularly close and thanks to
this cooperation it has also been possible to reform the common asylum system
e European one we set for ourselves in Brussels then we also concluded a bilateral agreeme
and a cooperation agreement on confidentiality the Minister of the Interior
He pointed out that Italy will be the only country with such an agreement but not sharing a border
With Germany otherwise bilateral agreements are only with neighboring countries
Ladies and gentlemen 2026 is not merely the anniversary of diplomatic relations
It is the 75th and Goethe's Italian journey also celebrates its 240th anniversary
Goethe's journey so this was likely the advertising campaign and
e cultural itinerary we've agreed upon will trace the path of today's public-minded spirit thus we have arranged a journey through culture that reflects this ethos
Goethe's journey through Italy a splendid idea—I don't think there's a better expression
best of our friendship so in that spirit dear Giorgio thank you
For the welcome for this hospitality in Rome and thank you
for the cooperation we will have in 2026 and beyond this year
Question for both the strengthening of this synergy between Italy and Germany beyond
and to be admitted as a leader in the European context it also aims to be a response
How should Europe respond
defensively to Donald Trump's increasingly aggressive if not outright hostile attitudes toward it
Personally I wouldn't say our willingness to cooperate with the United States remains
a strong will to cooperate I would say that Italy and Germany both nations
who historically maintain privileged relations with the United States in Europe
which stem from trade exchanges and mutual investments
which stem from the fact that both countries host American military bases
assist in this report I believe Italy and Germany can do so particularly
When working together even thanks to a pragmatic and non-instinctive approach to relationships
with the United States of America After that certainly my colleague Chancellor Merz and I share the view tha
another fundamental aspect is that the main debate in Europe should no
being clear about what we expect others to do for us our
e main discussion should be about what we can do for ourselves which is precisely
e focus of our joint document on competitiveness and the work at hand
what we are striving to achieve together to strengthen strategic capability and economic power
and the credible international presence of Europe certainly together Italy and Germany
They can do very important work I agree with what Giorgia said
Meloni but allow me to further clarify one additional aspect from a European standpoint
Not only should we do more to defend ourselves but we have also taken defense upon ourselves
Decided even for Laia during the summit concerning NATO
first and foremost we must simplify all of our systems—we build in a way tha
oo complex and convoluted plus we have too many parallel systems that are
developed and paid for simultaneously and therefore we truly need
mutual support and if we align ourselves with these three guiding principles—simplification
reducing the number and then naturally also
a kind of ladder a graded number in this sense at this point we might achieve
ave much more reasonable budgets so to make things significantly simpler we should naturally
work together regarding our defense industry in a way that ensures effectiveness
efficiently by having the broadest possible defense through contributions
at we can make available collectively because we are not addressing ourselves
oward NATO member states but toward external threats such as those coming from outside for example
cyber activities incorrect information misleading content and so forth which is why we are the ones who
we follow a concept of security that spans Italy and Germany therefore also encompassing
as simple as possible so we're not making any effort beyond that po
It concerns the defense of the defense policy itself as a concept but we work together
at the level of intelligence at the level of policing naturally to strengthen our democracy
More resilient to threats from
both outside and within—and that is our shared responsibility
Mr President you have just naturally referred to the Mercosur agreements regarding
e act of putting them into practice has been noted to not always be democratic so
At this point will they be put into practice and take effect
So she is Europe's first chancellor's partner in a role akin to that of the
French president's substitute though there are occasionally some differences
Regarding Mercosur I claim the work Italy has done to advance the agreement
more balanced we felt the agreement particularly favored certain sectors
particularly in addressing imbalances in the agricultural sector we have worked in a highly proactive manner
Thanks to the Commission's willingness we secured the outcome we wanted through our collaboration with the Commission
and even from partners some very important responses to reassure and defend
a fundamental asset of the European economy namely agriculture at that time
For us the agreement has become balanced and as you know Italy has given its approval
for subscribing to the Mercosur agreement after which there was parliamentary interventio
which could delay its implementation by at least one year up to one and a half years
after two years and therefore the Commission is assessing whether to temporarily implement
but that is a matter for the Commission all I can say is that today Italy
consider the agreement a balanced one and that securing that balance was key
allow Mercosur and free trade with Mercosur nations to explain everything
s positive effects After that I never read anything concerning the second
part of the question and beyond let's just say I never read politics in this way
mode I believe Italy in Europe represents a fundamental nation I believe Italy
oday is demonstrating on the international and European chessboard its stability and strength
s concreteness even its courage in raising questions that are right for
e future of the continent even when addressing it may seem uncomfortable and I believe that's exactly how it should be
say earning respect and greater respect from his counterparts and I strive to do the same
On my part I don't care about replacing anyone I care about the major nations of Europe
Riescans to engage in dialogue about the major challenges Europe faces because unfortunately
We are not living in a historical era if I may say so that allows us the luxury of childishness
the interpretation of foreign policy This phase is a delicate complex one for certa
serious version requires appropriate responses To achieve this we must address the
serious and profound questions not simplifications
With regard to Mercosur I have a comment The Mercosur agreement was intended to be put in place
practice for 25 years and has been signed and I regret that the European Parliament has not ratified
The world is waiting for the European Union to be able to act having taken this decision
Let's be honest at this point it's a court-ordered request for verification
precisely in line with European law For some it was also the motive
o prevent this treaty but the legitimacy of this agreement is beyond question
refers to a decision taken by a qualified majority of the Council of Ministers therefore
as well as all the representatives who are necessarily present so at this point there has bee
As previously mentioned this very circumstance calls for the gratitude I now express
as for Giorgia Meloni regarding this debate that has taken place especially also
e Italian intervention as I truly wish to express my heartfelt thanks
such a way that this collaboration has taken place Thanks to Italy a majority has been achieved
qualified and this has ensured that the agreement is legitimized from this standpoint
a distinctly democratic view for a temporary entry into force and thus also two weeks
at the level of the Council of Ministers this decision was made and at the moment whe
A North American country may ratify it allowing it to enter into force temporarily
because it is naturally a matter of trade policy that is occasionally employed and thus
o weaken Europe and therefore I would now like to encourage the Commissio
o establish and sign similar agreements also with other countries for example if anticipated
o go to India Mexico Indonesia Australia—since all these countries have been mentioned I would like to
do everything within my power to support you during this critical mome
we are committed to ensuring the European Union can sign additional agreements
s is the most important contribution we can make to ensure tha
ensure economic growth in our countries and I simply cannot understand the fact tha
at there are still political forces in Europe determined to prevent it from the far right
I'm not surprised by the left nor by the far right but I am surprised that instead
There are those among us who have been considered friends
yet still surprise me but regardless we will not let anyone stop us
Manuela Perrone Sole24Ore
Good morning Mr President good morning Chancellor I'm returning to the competitiveness document
President Meloni I ask you which sectors in your opinion Germany and Italy
can make a decisive contribution to the world of industry and competitiveness
How do you plan to move this document forward given the skepticism from the more doubtful partners
on economic integration and also on specific concrete initiatives particularly in the automotive sector
stead Chancellor Merz in the joint stateme
o oppose unilateral trade measures and the impact of non-
market disruptions that threaten global trade serve as a warning to Trump about the dangers ahead
New dazzles mean you'd be ready at a moment's notice to deploy counter-dazzles
And the anti-coercion instrument that Europe has currently decided to freeze—thanks for that
Following the priorities outlined in the document I believe they potentially cover all areas
dustrial workers who perform work in the sense that we have sought to summarize could benef
because when discussing simplification one is referring to the very issue I just mentioned
dazzles we've said many times that European overregulation ultimately ends up
representing the constraints we impose on ourselves regarding our productive capacity
companies and our enterprises and in essence we're talking about all sectors as well as
when discussing strengthening the single market we are obviously talking about having 450 million people
o whom you can turn with your products more quickly and precisely
When discussing lower costs for those producing such goods it's clear the focus shifts to automotive
For two nations like Italy and Germany this is a particularly important focus and I
believe we have already shown through our cooperation just how impactful the results can be
working together because we've already succeeded in reopening the regulatio
on CO2 we managed to avoid the completely electric mandate by 2035 and we succeeded
o achieve the goals that are still too timid for us I want to say this clearly
we need to do a great deal but even more than that—I believe from this perspective working together is essential
and have clear concrete proposals to address what the next steps are
clearly we are now sending a letter that opens a discussion and then our
Working groups convene to identify in detail which proposals are being made
more concrete to pursue but I believe there's fairly solid ground to build on here
just as we did with migration by initiating this discussion informally as well
collaboration with other member states ahead of these important European Council meetings
and gradually strive to build a consensus that enables us to uphold these principles
and I don't think it's so hard to succeed on matters of common sense because I also believe tha
we are living in a historical moment when everyone recognizes that there is a need
common sense and that we can no longer afford the luxury of ideological and unreasonable approaches
because we risk paying too high a price for this
So from my side a brief response First what can we do together
Giorgia Meloni spoke about the letter we wrote together
with regard to the attachments and the proposals Luna refers to the fact that we urge
e Commission to establish new guidelines regarding the right of oversig
of fusion These guidelines are absolutely outdated and it's high time they were updated
update last summer already to prevent the formation of cartels and so on and so forth
so at this point this is our agreement therefore these cross-border mergers
we cannot allow it in a way that enables companies to carry out cross-border mergers
They can be competitive in the global market One must not focus solely on the marke
ernal little one we must instead consider the global market upon which we depend
To remain competitive we must therefore have the opportunity to merge on an international scale
The second point is that we are working toward revising banking regulations particularly
As for capital it holds true in Germany it holds true in Italy and it holds true
other countries we must strive to understand the possibilities for granting credits
loans for example are much less feasible in European banks compared to large ones
American banks and we'd like to change that too Regarding trade policy
we will certainly defend ourselves with every possible means if anything were to arise
some way it prejudices us we don't want tariffs but countries from around the world that are
e warning that a tariff policy must be one that harms Europe
In economic policy and in other areas let these countries know that we are ready to defend ourselves
We have demonstrated this week and if necessary we are able to convene
e European Council at an extraordinary meeting and I believe the action we have demonstrated
this week lies a true example a compelling demonstration of what we are capable of
and thus what was done for example or threatened to be done by the American
president therefore has not been carried out from this point onward so
we must stand united and respond swiftly in real time to make it clear
yes we can establish commercial agreements with countries that share our views which are
ey declare their willingness to enhance trade exchanges open markets and that is sufficie
observe what is happening in the exchange between the European Union and Canada particularly
Over the past seven years an agreement has also been signed there which is now being discussed
en years before signing it even if only temporarily because
ere is still no final approval but thank goodness there is this tool available
such that it has practically come into effect even if temporarily
emporary so we don't want everyone to seize these chances these opportunities
Together Giorgio Meloni and I are two prime ministers two government leaders firmly convinced
That is why we have drafted this document
together in order to do everything possible for our European Union
Mr President Chancellor you both have a good relationship with Donald Trump
as for the Greenland crisis in recent days at this point how do you see it
behave in the future as you participate in the Peace Board the Peace Council
In Abu Dhabi for example Europe is not present today and to you this is an insult
And I would like to ask you Mr Chancellor a
follow-up question regarding Italy and France
The relationship with Italy in her view holds the same importance as the relationship between Germany
and France she imagines being able to establish a friendship akin to the one w
As for Greenland I repeat what I have already said previously regarding
the midst of the crisis I believe that with their certainly questionable and assertive methods we ca
The United States raise a strategic issue that nonetheless exists concerning the Arctic
s time The Arctic is one of the major strategic domains of the twenty-first century and if the Arctic
It is one of the great strategic domains of the twenty-first century and I believe this issue must be addressed
seriously address within the Atlantic alliance I believe that regarding
safety regarding the management of future maritime routes with the melting
for a territory exceptionally rich in raw materials as far as that is concerned
pertains to a territory that holds a strategically advantageous position particularly in terms of defense
anti-aircraft missile systems—this I believe deserves serious in-depth examination
what the Atlantic alliance must do which we are all ready to do so that everyone can
We understand how important this is and I don't think it's just an issue for the
United States but I believe involvement from the United States is obviously necessary as well
o address this issue So I remain optimistic about the possibility
o bring everyone back to the real issue which is how NATO the Atlantic alliance together
She focuses on enhancing her awareness amplifying her presence and aligning herself within a given territory
which remains strategic for all of us Regarding the Pisa Border as well
Italy's position is one of openness and interest in the initiative
I believe it's already clear to everyone that Italy and I think Germany as well ca
play a leading role in stabilizing the Middle East and I believe the work tha
o consolidate a complex and fragile truce and turn it into a lasting solutio
In the long term achieving the two-state solution will require our involvement
and thus we have an opening position of availability After that there are objectively
e issues regarding how the initiative has been structured which are even more problematic for us than
constitutional character: to date the statute we have received would be unconstitutional
and therefore incompatible with our legal system I believe we must which is what I have communicated
o the President of the United States and the American people also asking whether there was any willingness
o reopen this setup in order to also address needs that are not only Italian
but also shared by other European countries and I believe we should try to do so
o do this work I believe it's never the best choice to exclude oneself
a priori I always think that in a time like this the presence of countries like ours
It could make a difference so this is currently our stance
and we'll see what room there is to find shared solutions
First regarding the Peace Council I already mentioned several weeks ago tha
a President Trump whom I would personally be willing to join as part of
Council of Peace: whether it is an entity as originally planned
which accompanies the peace process in Gaza even in a second phase that has not yet begu
Unfortunately to disarm Hamas the current structure of the Peace Council itself is already in place
for governance on grounds of constitutional law We cannot accept that but certainly we are
ready to discuss new forms of cooperation with the United States of America If it concerns
o ensure finding a new format that somehow guarantees and brings about peace
diverse regions of the world including Gaza the Middle East Ukraine and these ongoing talks
which take place this of course is part of our intention and desires
and it was agreed upon with America For instance it was planned to carry out a new
at the Paris talks it had even been arranged in the past so that there could be
a deal between Ukraine the United States and us the Europeans and thus we are supporting this move
proceed in a constructive manner always with the desire and hope that we may
be steps toward peace We know that security assurances are matters of
we have discussed and Zelensky has also reached a final agreement regarding
precisely the Americans regarding the guarantees As for our bilateral relationship
Between Germany and Italy there is no hierarchy for us in Germany each country is equal
It is a country we respect and with which we establish partnership relations whether France or any other
since Italy is part of the European Union and we are all members of it the key point is that we are all connected through this shared union
The common goal is stronger defense across Europe greater competitiveness across Europe
and there are contributions from all sides so the Commission in Brussels is actively working on
this sense and therefore each of us can contribute and I am very pleased with that
e fact that we are built on a solid foundation Germany and Italy together for 75 years now with this
such a stable solid tangible relationship that it is still evident today
That is precisely what I envision what I hope for and what I understand to be a relationship of cooperation
partnership in such a way that there is an agreement among autonomous states bu
while simultaneously supporting one another Giorgio Edio and our governments have lived this reality firsthand
just as we truly met in Toulon last summer even in person were finally able to connect face to face
From a human personal standpoint working alongside peers is what drives Europe forward
I'd like to ask a question on behalf of both of us since there's an ongoing debate in the United States
I don't know if you've been following Trump's health and mental state—whether there's anyone who has
even casting doubt on American lawmakers Recently Trump revealed some messages
mocked publicly by European leaders like Macron who imitated him in turn Macro
e wrote to the Norwegian Prime Minister because since he hadn't been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize he
So he's no longer interested in peace—he said so himself We've also seen how he has
respect for one another and my question to you is this: do you think we can trust each other
Another of Donald Trump's abilities if it's becoming a security concer
worldwide and if you agree in giving him the Nobel Peace Prize since it's the thing that
He seems more interested in this Even that doesn't strike me as a serious way to approach it
ernational politics Donald Trump is the elected President of the United States these
I've heard the exact same arguments about Joe Biden before him I've even heard them made about him personally
on me when at one point I had to be away for five days because
I wasn't feeling well—can Giorgia Meloni still lead her country I believe it's necessary that she does
do the math with democracy and leaders who are elected and chosen by their own citizens
with whom we say we interface because it is not us thanking God who chooses
who governs other nations Then as for the Nobel Peace Prize I hope one day
We could award a Nobel Peace Prize to Donald Trump and I trust he might take this opportunity to
from this perspective making a difference in achieving a just and lasting peace for Ukraine and thus
Finally we might even nominate Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize I couldn't have
answer better than Giorgia Meloni did at
this moment Next episode
