SpaceX & Rocket Lab Failed in Testing. NASA Rolled SLS-Orion for Test while BO New Glenn…Weekly#29
SpaceX ran into issues during testing of Test Tank B18.3.
Rocket Lab faced similar challenges while testing Neutron’s booster fuel tank.
Even so, there are growing signs that B19 and S39 could move soon.
NASA has rolled out the Artemis II vehicle for testing, and Blue Origin has announced a launch date for New Glenn-3—though not for the Blue Moon lander, which has also recently been moved for testing.
Let’s break down the top stories of the week in this episode of Great SpaceX.

Breaking news from the space industry.
A SpaceX Starship test tank experienced a serious issue during testing at the Massey facility. What exactly went wrong, and how could this incident affect the timeline for the next Starship flight?
SpaceX is still firmly in the preparation phase for Starship Flight 12, and progress remains deliberate rather than rushed. At present, neither Ship 39 nor Booster 19 has rolled out for testing, and a major reason for this delay is the heavy activity at the Massey Test Site. Massey is currently operating at near capacity, with multiple hardware elements undergoing evaluation at the same time.

The Massey Test Site is now hosting three different test tanks: B18.1, also known as Test Tank 17, B18.3, and S39.1. These tanks are not part of an upcoming flight, but they play a crucial role in verifying the latest V3 design upgrades. The primary purpose of these tests is to validate new structural, pressure, and staging modifications before they are fully implemented or adjusted on the main Starship and Super Heavy prototypes. In this sense, Massey has become a proving ground for the next generation of Starship hardware.
However, an unexpected incident occurred during one of these tests. On the evening of January 20th, B18.3 experienced a visible failure. Based on available footage and imagery, the issue appears to have taken place during a high pressure test, possibly a crush test. Hardware located directly below the common dome of the tank ruptured, and pressurized gas was seen venting forcefully from the structure.
